Praying Extraordinarily

Psalm 77:2 says, “I sought the Lord and my day of trouble. My hands were continually lifted up all night long.”

Many times, our prayer strategies go to the next level when situations reach a point of desperation. Health, finances, family struggles…these unexpected moments of intensity call for ‘drop everything’ prayer. It’s when you call or text friends to pray. Rally the church…prayer chains…everybody praying. Desperation can still be strategic.

This week, as we continue our series inspired by the Kendrick brothers’ book. The Battle Plan for Prayer, we’re focusing on how to pray extraordinarily.

The experience of Esther in the Old Testament led to the necessity for extraordinary prayer. You may recall how she, a beautiful young Jewish woman, was selected as a candidate for Queen of Persia when the king deposed his own wife. But from inside the palace, Esther learned from her childhood guardian, Mordecai, about a plan to exterminate the Jewish people.

The situation was dire – no less for Esther than anyone else. She wasn’t yet in a position to approach the king with any petition without permission. Customs of the day meant she could be lawfully killed for attempting to enter his presence. But she made a courageous call for extraordinary prayer: “So, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go into the king, which is not according to law; and if I perish, I perish“ (Esther 4:16).

The result of their praying was miraculous. The mastermind of the genocide was killed instead, hung on his own gallows, and Mortdecai, the Jew, was raised to a key position of leadership, charged with the state-sanctioned program of protecting the Jews from for the persecution. That’s the kind of prayer model the Bible guides us to follow.

There are three important elements of the extraordinary prayers in Esther: corporate prayer, fasting prayer and fervent prayer.

____

CORPORATE: Extraordinary prayer is a team effort. We read about this in Acts. The apostles gathered after Jesus’ ascension into heaven and prayed together.

When Peter was literally thrown into prison under heavy guard, “prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God” (Acts 12:5). The night before his execution, chained between two soldiers, Peter was trying to sleep. Then an angel appeared, set him free and let him past the guards and gates on his way back home. As one old time author has said “the angel sent Peter out of prison, but it was the prayer that sent the angel.”

FASTING: They prayed with fasting. We know that fasting is one of the keys to prayer. But serious matters call for unusual sacrifice with focus, devotion and dedication.

God, through the prophet Joel, commanded his people to return to him “with all your heart…with fasting, weeping and mourning,“ (Joel 2:12).

Jesus, at the outset of his earthly ministry, prepared himself for the challenges ahead by committing to 40 days of fasting in Matthew 4:2. By taking time to deny the daily demands of our flesh to focus all of our attention on God, we can go more deeply and intimately into focused prayer in times of difficulty, strain, and emergency.

We fast because we mean business. Fasting together means we’re united in appealing to him and hearing from him. When it’s done in sincerity, God consistently honors it.

_____

FERVENT: They prayed fervently, persistently and passionately. Circumstances can reach a point where our survival instinct alone can produce fervent praying. When the men on board the ship with the prophet Jonah began fearing for their lives, they called earnestly on the god they didn’t even know, begging for mercy from the storm (Jonah 1:14). God spared them.

But many situations in our lives and world are just as severe and call equally for fervent prayer. Sin is in our nature, pride is in our churches, heartbreak is in our homes and persecution happens among our brothers and sisters. The seeds of hardship and hospitality against Christians – experienced even now and many nations of the world – are already here on our shores. But is the church of God broken and surrendered? Are we willing to be “miserable and mourn and weep when necessary?” (James 4:9)

We know without a doubt that difficult times will come (2 Timothy 3:1). Jesus realistically told his disciples, “you will have suffering in this world,“ in John 16:33. “Do not be surprised “Peter said, “at the fiery ordeal among you.” When these problems reach an insurmountable breaking point, they require an unusual power that will only result from extraordinary prayer.

___

All of us tend to revert to a default level of praying – most likely an easier and more comfortable praying then we like to admit. But Jesus, in his own life, would ramp up the fervency of his praying depending on the need of the moment. From a joyful request, to praying all night, the crying out on his face before going to the cross.

Fervent prayer touches God’s heart. “The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).  But imagine what the combined, persistent, united prayers of many righteous people, each of them fasting and praying, might accomplish. It doesn’t just connect – it works miracles, moves mountains, ushers in revival, and changes the course of nations. Extraordinary prayer can produce extraordinary results!

Lord God Almighty, I praise you that nothing is impossible with you. Train us and lead us into extraordinary prayer. Help us throw off any sin, surrendering ourselves completely to you. May we see the needs of our city and our nation the way that you see them. Unite believers in my church and community an extra ordinary prayer. May we walk in love, I agree and heart, fast and faith, and unite in for rent, persistent prayer. Bring revival and spiritual awakening to our land. Be glorified through us, oh God!

Mystery Monday!

Steppin’ in to a brand new week here on the Afternoon Drive! (Haha. Mystery Box Pun).
(Read on to find out why that’s funny).

First thing’s first, he figured out that it was not very fragile and not edible.
He also figured out that the item “slides” pretty easily. (HA another item pun).
The item has a part that is made of a spongy material, and it is mostly used often outside.

From the sniff test, we learned that it is not a gardening item, nor is it a sports item.
We also learned that my feet have a medicated smell. So that’s a thing. Idk man.

eurhythmic

  1. characterized by a pleasing rhythm; harmoniously ordered or proportioned.

The English eurhythmic conflates two Greek adjectives: rhythmikόs meaning “set to time,rhythmical (movement)”; eurhythmόshaving the wider range of meanings “rhythmical, harmonious (in music, dancing, or song); regular (of a pulse);graceful, orderly (of a person).” The prefix eu- is from Greek an adverbial use of the neuter singular of the adjective eǘs “good, brave, noble,” very common in epic poetry. Eurhythmic is restricted in English to harmony and proportion in architecture and to the   system of exercise with music and dancing. Eurhythmic entered English in the 19th century for the architecture sense, and in the 20th century for the music and dancing sense.

PRAYING DEFENSIVELY

Ephesians 6:10-16 says,

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

Christians are equipped with everything needed for life and Godliness.  But many of us aren’t ready when the enemy attacks.  That causes us to live in defeat in many areas of our lives.

The last two weeks as we’ve reviewed The Battle Plan for Prayer, we’ve talked about praying offensively and praying preemptively.  This week we’re sharing the defensive strategy – a hand to hand combat against Satan’s attacks.

Alex and Stephen Kendrick suggest an acronym to help us remember how to pray defensively.  RESPOND.  Today we’re sharing the meaning of these seven letters.

We’re sharing the RESPOND acronym today to help us in our defensive prayer.

R is for RESIST; resist Satan in Jesus name. James 4:7 tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from us. We don’t have to put up with Satan’s thoughts, accusations, or mind games. Jesus refused to be bribed into surrendering control or falling victim to his schemes. Christ pushed back. ‘He said go away Satan’ on one occasion, (Matt 4:10) and get behind me Satan on another (Mark 8:33). We should do the same thing, but we do so in Christ’s name and by his authority, not our own.

The name of Jesus Christ is above every other name. His is the name in which we pray, are healed, and cast out demons. There’s a reason why the name Jesus Christ is used for cursing and profanity in movies and television, and never Buddha or Mohammed… Because it is the name of power that Satan must submit to and wants to dishonor. We should never speak Jesus‘s name irreverently. It is holy. So when you are confronted in combat with the devil, resist him by calling on the most powerful name known to man. Either confront him directly with “Go away Satan, in Jesus name!”…Or indirectly in prayer, “Father, in Jesus‘s name, I ask you to rebuke Satan. He must flee.”

E is for ESCAPE; escape with scripture. God promises to always provide “way of escape” from Temptation. Every time Jesus was tempted by the devil, he raised his shield of faith and strategically cut down Satan by quoting the word of God. We should trust and utilize the appropriate verse that deals with the specific Jesus does this in Matthew 4:1–11. God has given us loads of powerful ammunition in Scripture, ready to fire at the enemy.  We just need to learn the verses that deal with your issues so when Satan temps or plants a wicked thought in your head like “you are unloved and will fail,” you can respond with, “Get away from me Satan, in Jesus name.”

Romans 5:8 says God proved his love for us when Christ died for us. And Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!“

Block, counter, punch, and kick to the face!

S is for SEARCH; search for unconfessed sin. The times you are tested should become a motivation for cleansing. The book of James says after you submit to God and resist the devil, you should “cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts”.

Victory should lead to repentance because repentance helps you stand strong against temptations. But there’s a difference between being tempted by something and being tormented by something. Everyone is tempted. Jesus was and you will be. It’s not a sin to be tempted. If the enemy is constantly tormenting you with something there’s a good chance that an unconfessed sin from your past has given him a foothold and allow his network of lies into your heart. The truth will set us free, why can keep us in bondage. We must throw off any hindrance of saying “which so easily in tangles us” and the lies that go with it so that we can walk in the victory and freedom Christ has already one for us on the cross. I name is attacks today may not be because of yesterday sin- regardless we should pray, “search me. Oh God. And know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting “(Psalm 139: 23-24)

If God reveals any un-repented sin from yesterday. Or even a decade ago. quickly admit and empty yourself of it.

P is for PLEAD; Plead the blood of Jesus. When we admit our sin and plead (appeal by faith) for God to cleanse us by his blood, he is faithful to forgive and Wash is from all unrighteousness. We should rest in this. Forgiving believers who don’t believe they are forgiven will not act like believers, these believers make easy marks for enemy fire. It’s true “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God”. But by faith in him, we’ve been “justified as a gift by his grace through the redemption which in Jesus Christ… And his blood”. Only his blood washes away sin. If God says you are forgiven, do not call him a liar and your heart by believing you are not. The devil might continue steady accusations against this truth as part of his overall attack. But just because he says something and you believe it doesn’t make it any more accurate. Cling to the scripture when your emotions are spinning out of control. There is power in the blood; read it, ask for it, and trust it. Pray: “father, I plead for you to cover me and cleanse me with the blood of Jesus. I trust your faithfulness and rest in your forgiveness”

O is for OVERTAKE; overtake ground given to Satan. Through the cross, Jesus fully disarmed the power of the enemy. So Satan knows his weapons are already defective. That’s why he bluffs and deceives people into submitting to him.

When we sin or doubt, we are giving him ground. Ephesians 4:26-27 says, 26 “In your anger do not sin.” Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.”

But when we repent and believe the truth, he loses control over us. 2 Timothy 2:24-26 says, “And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”

We need to ask God to occupy the dark areas or temptations of our heart with His spirit and His word.  Present yourself back to God and rededicate yourself fully and completely to the Lordship of Christ.  Let’s keep advancing on the ground He already died to claim.

N is for NAME; name someone in targeted prayer. Ephesians 6:18 is Paul’s reminder for us to get busy praying for others! “18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

We can escape with the Bible when we feel temptation coming on.  Part of that escape is praying for others.  Prayer can help us get off of the endless cycle of worry for ourselves and focused on the needs of others.

D is for DELIGHT; delight in the Lord.

Psalm 27 says, “And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices the shouts of joy: I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.”

The enemy approached. He brought his worst. He bore down with all his weight, but in Christ, you stood firm. You resisted without stumbling. You came back from a battleground, where you had lost other times, victorious!

Remember “a righteous man falls seven times and rises again.”  Rejoice and delight in that wisdom from Proverbs.

When we learn how to RESPOND, Satan’s the one in for the surprise!

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, I thank you that you are greater in me then he who is in the world. Thank you for paving the way and not leaving me here to fight my battles alone. Thank you for showing yourself more than capable of giving me everything needed. Help me walk in the victory you have already one on the cross. Please give me the wisdom and grace to overcome every lie, stronghold, addiction, an area of defeat in my life. Teach me how to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Help me put on the full armor of God and stand firm in the evil day. I am confident in you and in how much I need you. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Who Knew Wednesday!

Today Lilly and I shared with you all the history and facts of X-rays!

To find out what an X-ray stands for (and what is actually is) click HERE.

What to know more about the history of the X-ray? Click HERE.

Here are the tips that we shared on what to expect and how to be more comfortable!

How to make your X-Ray more comfortable!

  1. Ask Questions! Ask the medical professionals to explain the procedure if you don’t understand. There here to help!
  2. Ask if you can a bring a pillow!
  3. If you are in any way uncomfortable, let the medical professionals know! There may be something that can do to help or this may alert them to a problem that they need to know.
  4. Just keep calm! There is need to be nervous – it won’t hurt! The radiation level is low – the apron they put on you is just for precaution!

What to expect:

  1. Depending on what part of your body the X-ray is being done, you might be asked to undress.
  2. No matter where the X-ray is being done, you will be asked to remove all metal items from your person, like jewelry, glasses, change belt bucks and etc.
  3. Sometimes, again depending on what kind of X-ray it is, you will be asked to drink a liquid that will with the procedure.
  4. They may re-adjust your body to get a better view or to help them see what they need to see.
  5. This could take anywhere from a couple minutes to over an hour, again, depending on what is being done.

Congratulations to our two callers “numbers fives” who ever enter to win a Turkey – in – Totally Tasty Tom Turkey Hunt!  Heather and Sherrisa! To find out more click HERE.

A Musical Mystery Monday!

Good afternoon! Another wonderful week here in Mt. Vernon, and I kicked the week off by giving away a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley, and registering 2 people to win a turkey from Smithhisler Meats of Mt. Vernon!

We would like to wish congratulations to Bob of Howard and
They were entered to win that Turkey from Smithhisler Meats!

Today, our Mystery Question was inspired by today’s fun holiday.. Saxophone day!
Now I can say that I’ve been an active celebrator of this holiday since I picked up the saxophone in 6th grade. (See the included picture).
IMG_2392.JPG
The saxophone family was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax. Adolphe Sax wanted to create a group
of instruments that would be the most powerful and vocal of the woodwinds, and the most adaptive of the brass instruments, that would fill the vacant middle ground between the two sections. Sax patented the saxophone in two groups of seven instruments each. Each series consisted of instruments of various sizes in alternating transposition. The series pitched in B and E, designed for military bands, have proved popular and most saxophones encountered today are from this series. Instruments from the so-called “orchestral” series, pitched in C and F, never gained a foothold, and the B and E instruments have now replaced the C and F instruments when the saxophone is used in an orchestra.

Congrats to Hayley from Mt. Vernon who correctly guess our Mystery Question!
The question was: What year was the saxophone invented?
The year was 1846!

Our hearts here at WNZR are hurting for those who were affected by the tragedy in Texas this weekend. Romans 12:9 tells us to hate what is evil and cling to what is good.
The song ‘Bleed the Same’ from Mandisa tells us to fight for each other, and let love be the cry if we’re shouting. We’re all the same inside, and we need to pray that God heals our incredible land, because we are more beautiful when we come together.
Check out Mandisa’s song here.

Thanks for listening!
