Apple Pie Friday

apple pieThe first ever Apple Pie Baking Contest is coming to downtown Mount Vernon for the September First Friday

Find the details and rules by clicking here.  Thanks to COTC, MVNU, Kenyon and the Mount Vernon Grand Hotel for co-sponsoring this event!  Thanks to the Mount Vernon News for hosting the entry forms online.

Did you know Apple Pie is NOT an American original?  It was first conceived in 1381 in England.  The Dutch are also well-known for their apple crumb and apple lattice pies.

Originally, apple pie eaters DID NOT eat the crust.  Sugar was very scarce in the 14th century so crusts simply held the pie filling and were called coffins.  Yes, like the burial coffins.

Today’s Word of the Day is lattice, which means ‘a structure consisting of strips of wood or metal crossed and fastened together with square or diamond-shaped spaces left between, used typically as a screen or fence or as a support for climbing plants’ (or a pattern that looks like that). It can also mean, in physics, a regular repeated three-dimensional arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules.

Gettys and Gherkins

Our Mystery Monday trivia question asked this: “Atkins, Arkansas is famous for selling the first what?”

The answer is a fried dill pickle.  The History Channel says the first deep-fried pickle was sold at an Atkins Pickle Company festival in 1963.  They’re pretty much a staple now at fairs, festivals and as an appetizer at many restaurants.

The prize today was the CD ‘In Christ Alone’ from Keith and Kristyn Getty, the amazing worship leaders from Northern Ireland.  Congratulations to Tomi from Mount Vernon for winning the prize.  Find out more about the Gettys here.

Our word of the day was related to the question – GHERKIN. It means a small variety of cucumber. Those baby sweet pickles…yep, those are gherkins!

Thanks for listening!

Crazy hot dogs

Here are some of the crazy hot dog recipes we shared from the May 23rd show:

The Ham Dog- originates from Decatur, GA: Use a hoagie roll for the bun.  The hot dog is wrapped in a half-pound beef patty, then deep-fried and topped with chili, bacon and a fried egg.

The Skunk Dog- originates from Winchendon, MA: Use a regular bun, and grill the hot dog as usual, then spread marshmallow creme on the bun, top with peanut butter syrup and hot fudge.

The Chihuahua Dog- from NY City: Regular bun, then wrap the grilled hot dog in bacon, then top with sour cream and avocado.
