Today’s Mystery Monday trivia question was from 1908, the last year that Eddie’s favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, won the World Series.

Our three questions and answers:

  • who did the Cubs beat in the World Series that year?  The Detroit Tigers
  • who was elected US President three weeks later? William Howard Taft
  • where were the summer Olympics held that year? London

Congratulations to Alex from Fredericktown, who answered correctly and wins the $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley and the Pier House Coffee Shop!

Our word of the day was juxtapose (JUX-tuh-pose), which is a verb meaning to place or deal with close together for contrasting effect.

Thanks for listening!

Today we head to the state of Nevada for our Mystery Monday question…

Nevada residents lead the United States in this characteristic.  What can 86% of them say about themselves?

Answer? They WERE NOT born in Nevada.

Congratulations to Krissta from Mount Vernon who answered the question correctly and wins a $5 certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley and the Pier House Coffee Shop.

Our Word of the Day is UNCTUOUS (UNK-choo-is), which is an adjective meaning something fatty, oily, greasy or plastic in appearance.  For a person, it can also be applied, meaning  the person has an insincere, smooth-talking manner.

Mystery Monday, Tico Style!

SamGoodman

Today we had the chance to visit with our own Samantha Goodman and hear about her experience in Costa Rica.  Sam and 18 other MVNU students spent nearly three months in San Jose, studying at language school and exploring one of the most beautiful countries in the world!

What’s unique about Sam’s experience is that she spent 5 days in the hospital with two herniated discs after a whitewater rafting trip.  Thankfully, she recovered and was able to finish her courses.  Sam actually attended the SAME language school that my parents attended when they were on the mission field. We lived in the same neighborhood!

Today’s two-part Tico trivia question was (Costa Ricans call themselves Ticos): What is the second-largest city in Costa Rica? What does the city’s name mean in English?

Answer: Puerto Limon, which means Lemon Port. Congratulations to Janice of Mount Vernon who wins a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley and Pier House Coffee.

Our Word of the Day is: Guanacaste (guan-a-COSS-tay), which is a province in Costa Rica named for the Guanacaste tree, which means ‘ear tree’ in an Aztec dialect. The fruits of this tree look like ears and are favored by parrots and field mice. Here’s a picture:

Wait your turn in the…queue?

Line
Today’s Mystery Monday question was: What is the only word in the English language that is pronounced the same when the last four letters are removed?

The answer…and our Word of the Day…QUEUE (like Q), which means (as a noun) a line or sequence of people or vehicles awaiting their turn to be attended to or to proceed. It can also be a verb, meaning to take one’s place in a queue. This is a very common word in both Britain…and in computing!

Congratulations to Lisa from Danville, who answered our question and wins a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

It’s also Lifeline 2016 week at WNZR – join us Wednesday for our annual day of prayer and praise.

It’s the start of a GREAT week!

Passion_FB_MWSIt’s the start of Holy Week here on WNZR…

Last night I had the chance to watch the FOX live musical, The Passion, produced and hosted by Tyler Perry, which included the talents of Michael W. Smith (above; photo credit, FOX) and many others like Trisha Yearwood, Chris Daughtry, Shane Harper and Jencarlos Canela.  It was a creative, unique presentation of the Gospel story. Honestly, to see 2 hours of live network TV proclaiming the name of Jesus was awesome! Stay tuned for details about a possible re-run or DVD release.

Today our Mystery Monday trivia question was: The Cadbury Crème Egg was introduced in its current form in what year and with what name?

The answer was 1963, as Fry’s Crème Eggs.  The name changed to Cadbury in 1971.

Fun fact: Cadbury is introducing an Oreo flavor of Creme Egg this year!

Today’s Word of the Day is SMITHEREENS – which means small pieces or bits of something.

It’s the day for question marks?

question
Monday, March 14, 2016 marks two ‘not-so-official’ holidays:

International Pi Day (3.14)…a day to celebrate math and desserts!

International Ask a Question Day…perfect for Mystery Monday.

Today we shared the list of Google’s Top 10 trending questions from 2015.  They were a mix of technology (how to’s on Snapchat, iTunes, emoji and Windows 10 updates), games (how to solve a Rubik’s Cube and how to earn legendary marks in the game Destiny) and every year (how do I lose 10 pounds?) questions.

Our Mystery Monday question was: what was the #1 searched movie on Google in 2015? The answer was Jurassic World, followed by Furious 7 and American Sniper. Congratulations to Sandye of Mount Vernon for getting the question right!

Our Word of the Day was VERBATIM (ver-BAY-tim), an adverb meaning ‘word for word.’

Thanks for listening!

Mystery Monday – 3/7/16

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive and I had a special guest co-host, Annabelle Harray, WNZR’s Production Director.

We finally had the long-awaited return of the Mystery Box. I hid an item for Annabelle that she described as being small, lightweight, and having a distinct and chemical smell. We received several guesses for everything from sponges to white-out. Mary from Fredericktown called in and correctly guessed that the item was a bottle of nail polish. She picked up a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Our Word of the Day was babel, a noun meaning a confusion of voices or sound. You can read more on that here.

We also told you about Spirit Song, the annual 3-day Christian musical festival that takes place at Kings Island. You can find all the information for that over here.

Have an awesome week!

Leap Day? Spring Break?

Jess 5

(picture) Annabelle, Jess and April enjoy a Tennessee waterfall!

So this February 29th is a one-of-a-kind day, in more ways than one…

MVNU is on its new academic calendar, so spring break is a bit early this year and is two weeks, allowing trips that used to happen in January to happen now. Faith is overseas working on a mission trip in Belize (see last Wednesday’s post). Jessica and a couple friends are taking a road trip down to the Carolinas…here’s a little bit more about it from her:

Since it is spring break at MVNU, I get to take a week off of the show to do some traveling! Myself, along with Annabelle Harray (WNZR’s production director), and our friend April, are road tripping all over the place this week. Today (Sunday) we got up and departed Mount Vernon just after 6am and headed to the Smokey Mountains. After several hours of driving, a pit stop for lunch in a random Kentucky park, and sitting in traffic on the side of a mountain for over an hour, we finally made it to Gatlinburg, Tennessee around 3:30 pm. We rode on an awesome alpine coaster, which is like a little personal roller coaster you control that takes you on a scenic ride throughout the outskirts of the Smokey Mountains. We also hiked for a little bit in the National Park and got to see a really cool waterfall and some amazing views of the mountains. It was really awesome to be able to spend a few hours in nature, just taking in God’s beautiful creation. Up next – Asheville, North Carolina!

The Mystery Monday question asked what the Top 10 comfort foods were in a recent Harris poll.  I gave you #1 – pizza, and #10 Mexican food…Michelle called in to guess three more, and got #2 – chocolate, #3 – ice cream, and #8 popcorn.

Today’s Word of the Day is LEXICAL, an adjective meaning: of or relating to words or the vocabulary of a language as distinguished from its grammar and construction.

60 cents? That’s it?

phone charger
Today our Mystery Monday question was: This activity costs the average American about 60 cents a year.

The surprising answer was: charging our cell phones!

So I did some digging…really?  Only 60 cents a year? I found an article from the utility blogging group OPower that studied how much electricity an iPhone 6 takes to charge. They found that based on the average price of electricity, it takes about 47 cents a year to charge your battery once a day. 52 cents for the iPhone 6 Plus.

How did they figure this?  It takes 10.5 watt hours to charge the phone.  Electricity costs around 12.3 cents per kilowatt (that’s 1,000) hour. 10.5 x 365 = 3,832.50 watt hours or 3.8325 kw hours. Take 12.3 cents  x 3.8325 and you get 47.1 cents. Easy, right?

By the way, a laptop costs 14 x more to power up each day = $6.58/year
A Desktop? 49 x more = $23.03
An XBox? 61 x more = $28.67
AN HDTV? 71 x more = $33.37

Today’s word of the day was ENCOMIUM (en-COH-mee-um), meaning a formal expression of high praise; it can also be a eulogy. Example: An encomium by the president greeted the returning hero.

Thanks for listening!
