Splashes, pies and jello!

Who Knew?

Mount Vernon is getting a splash pad at Riverside Park, hopefully as early as this fall.

  • Councilwoman Amber Keener announced plans Monday night at the City Council meeting. The splash pad will be pirate-themed and named in the memory of former Ariel executive, husband and father, Hunter Wright (Capt. Hunter’s Landing). Funding for the splash pad and the adjacent pavilion are coming from the Ariel Corporation and the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.
  • The pavilion will be able to host events like local meetings, outdoor music lessons, book talks, and parts of the library’s summer reading program. Rendering pictures here were provided by Councilwoman Keener!

Today is National Pecan Pie Day!

  • Pecan pie is a staple at Thanksgiving and Christmas tables around the country.
  • The first printed pecan pie recipe surfaced in an 1886 edition of “Harper’s Bazaar” magazine. Years later, various forms of the recipe were published in well-known cookbooks such as “Joy of Cooking.”
  • NationalToday.com reports that throughout the early 1900s, Karo corn syrup was invented and yet another claim to the discovery of pecan pie emerged. The wife of a company executive shared her recipe using Karo as the ingredient of choice instead of maple syrup, honey, or molasses. Whether her claim is true, Karo corn syrup helped raise the popularity of pecan pie when they published the recipe on the product can.

Today is also National Eat Your Jello Day…um…what??

  • Jell-O was trademarked in New York in 1897, but it’s a classic dessert we all know and love! The best part of it is that it comes in a variety of flavors and can be combined with many ingredients for a simple, delicious treat.

Congratulations to Steve of Granville, who won today’s family 4-pack of tickets!

Thanks for listening!

Corvettes, Ceviche and BINGO!

Today’s Who Knews:

  • On June 28, 1953, workers at a Chevrolet factory in Flint, Michigan, built the inaugural Corvette. Two days later, the first Corvette was proudly driven off the production line, marking the completion of one of the 300 produced that year.
  • Today also celebrates the seafood appetizer Ceviche, one of my personal favorites (and I enjoy making it). Ceviche (say-VEE-chay) is popular in the Caribbean regions and in Latin America. It is made from raw, white fish (cod, sea bass, even shrimp or tilapia), marinated overnight in lime and/or lemon juice, which actually cooks the raw fish. I like to mix the lime juice with cilantro, a little bit of salsa or pico de gallo, a pinch of salt and a pinch of garlic salt or garlic cloves. Check out some ceviche recipes here from Cooking Classy.
  • yesterday was the birthday of B-I-N-G-O! The game originated in 16th century Italy, gaining popularity in Europe before it evolved into the modern version. Edwin S. Lowe introduced Bingo in the US in the early 20th century.

Who Am I?

  • I was born June 28,1703, in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England
  • I was the 15th of 19 children, one of nine who survived infancy
  • I was rescued from a fire when I was five years old after becoming trapped
  • I was ordained a deacon after finishing my degrees at Christ Church, Oxford
  • I was a member of the Holy Club with my brother Charles, later called the Oxford Methodists
  • My evangelical experience on May 24, 1738 at Aldersgate Street is still celebrated in churches today
  • I believed and preached on personal holiness and social engagement, many times called the Wesleyan Holiness movement

I am…John Wesley! Congratulations to Dan of Mount Vernon, who guessed correctly and wins the Katy Nichole CD, ‘Jesus Changed My Life.’

Keeping up with Because I Said I Would

Today on The Afternoon Drive, Zoe shared the interview Alyssa Sidle did with Alex Sheen with Because I Said I would. Here is a little bit from Because I Said I Would

“It’s hard to overstate what has been lost: our computers, program supplies, recreation equipment, merchandise inventory, fundraising resources, event supplies, washers and dryers, sheets, towels, blankets, cleaning supplies, audio/video equipment… It’s all gone.

During this challenging time, as we rebuild what has been lost, your support becomes invaluable in sustaining our mission.”

If you would like to learn more about their organization or how to donate, please visit HERE

Zoe also talked about national selfie day and world music day!

World Music Day originally launched several decades ago in France. In 1982 the Ministry of Culture in France developed a clever idea to celebrate the wonders of music. They wanted free, live music to be available to everybody no matter what their heritage or background. Usually you have to pay for tickets to music festivals, but not with World Music Day! Sleuths, Scavengers, structures, singers and siblings?

Yea. We’ve got it all today!

Who Knew that today was National Scavenger Hunt Day?

Developed from a tradition of folk games throughout ancient history, the scavenger hunt has been around in its modern form in the US for around a century. The game was made popular in the 1930s by New York gossip columnist and radio personality, Elsa Maxwell. Around that time, the concept of the game was even featured in the 1936 film, My Man Godfrey.

By the ‘70s and ‘80s, college and university campuses had made the scavenger hunt their own. The University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt (called Scav Hunt or “Scav”) was founded in 1987 and continues to be held annually over four days in the month of May.

National Scavenger Hunt Day is celebrated on May 24 in honor of the 1883 birth date of Elsa Maxwell, the party hostess and promoter of the game who brought it into modern times in the 1930s.

This week is also the birthdate of the mastermind behind fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born May 22, 1859. He wrote his first Holmes story in 1887 (he was 28 years old).

This week is also the birthdate of America’s largest marble structure, the New York Public Library. It took 14 years and $9 million to build. The dedication was May 23, 1911, with the opening today – estimates say 40,000 people came through the library its first day!

  4. I reigned for 63 years.

  6. That earned me the nickname, “the grandmother of Europe.”
