A Disney Magic Mystery Monday!

Hello! I’m back from vacation!
And I also hid for the Mystery Box today!
Joe and Todd had to guess what was in the box!

My family and I are moving so I’m kind of tearing apart my room, so I brought in something that I had in my room for the longest time.

From the shake test, Joe and Todd learned that it is made of cloth, and it’s not perfectly cylindrical, but it’s close.
It has stuffing in it, and it has ears.

Congrats to Deana from Howard! She correctly guessed that it was a stuffed animal!
More specifically, it’s a Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch) Tsum Tsum!

We’re headed out On the Road with Big Blue this weekend to the Knox County Fair!
Read all about the fair right here!

Praying the Word

For the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing devotionals from the book Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr. James Banks, who serves as a pastor at Peace Church in Durham, North Carolina and is a regular writer for Our Daily Bread.

In this short book, we are reminded that the prayers of the Bible are an amazing gift from God and they have so much to teach us. They help us understand how our Bible heroes like Jesus, Job, Mary, Moses, David, Samuel, and many others talked with God. These prayers can also help us talk to God. Just as Jesus used several of David’s prayers in his final moments on the cross in Matthew 27, we can find the prayers of scripture.

This is what Alex and Stephen Kendrick talk about in their book The Battle Plan for Prayer in the chapter called ‘Praying the Word.’ In the prayers of scripture, we find words that can help carry our thoughts and emotions to God. When we use the prayers from God’s word, humbly and expectedly, to encourage us in our own prayers, we can open our hearts and lives to deeper faith, renewed strength, blessings and God’s power. God invites us closer to him through the prayers of the Bible.

Today we’re going to share a couple of prayers to praise and honor God. This is what Dr. Banks writes: true praise is praise with an active faith that is greater than just emotion. It is a daring thing. It challenges us to reach for something beyond ourselves, giving ourselves up to God.

Sometimes praising God will not come naturally to us because we all struggle with self. And self is like a river…it can have a dangerous current that runs strong and deep in our hearts. Yes, the Bible tells us to always be joyful to never stop praying, and that it’s God’s will that I be thankful in all circumstances, but we all have times that we just don’t feel like it.

Still, by the grace of God we can learn that delight is not just something we FEEL, it’s something that we DO. God’s word commands us to take delight in him in Psalm 37:4. “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

This command confronts us in our complacency and calls us to a higher way of thinking. This isn’t easy, because it costs us something. But even though it begins as work, it doesn’t end that way. God never leaves us where we are. With every effort we make to draw near to Him, we’re promised that he will come close to us.

That promise comes in James 4:8, “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

We should dare to delight in God…and not only will he give us the desire of our hearts, he becomes it. So over the next few weeks will be sharing verses that are the spirit-inspired praises of God’s people. We can make these our own when we dive in and pray these prayers will discover the God is moving to meet us.

Our first prayer from the word comes from Exodus 15 verses 6 & 7.
“Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O Lord, smashes the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty, you overthrow those who rise against you. You unleash your blazing fury; it consumes them like straw.”

The Bottom Line – Praise Thursday

For Praise Thursday here on the Afternoon Drive, we finished up our series from the book “Can God Be Trusted in Our Trials” from Dr. Tony Evans.

We started by recaping last week’s talk on the men who built their houses – one on the firm foundation and one without a firm foundation.

Here’s the bottom line…
The storm that battered the two houses in Jesus’s story did not determine the two men’s foundations, it only exposed them. This storm wasn’t a summer shower. The rains and wind blew hard enough to knock down a house. This was the kind of storm that breaks windows, and makes the roof lift and heave. When you encounter a storm like this, you’d better have the right foundation.
If Jesus is your foundation, you’ll be able to withstand the storm. But let me tell you a secret… IF He isn’t your foundation, you need to get started pouring a new one today, because you can’t lay a foundation when it’s pouring rain. You can pour a solid foundation before or after a storm, but not during. The middle of a crisis is a terrible time to discover that your house is shaking and shuddering as the foundation washes away.
Jesus is there. No Matter What.
Someone may be saying today, “Well, I thought Jesus was my foundation. But I’m not so sure right now, because I’m being battered by this trial, and it feels like my life is going to give way under me. I’m scared to death, in fact, to be really honest, I’ve kind of been wondering if Jesus really knows what I’m going through.”
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re certainly not alone.
Many Christians have had the same questions in the storm, which is why we’re going to visit Mark 4:35-41.
Jesus put the disciples in a boat and said “Let us go over to the other side” meaning, the other side of the sea of Galilee. They were in trouble. The greek word for this storm emphasises just how out of nowhere this storm was.
Now, the disciples were experienced on the water, but this time, they panicked. They began bailing water until they remembered that Jesus was with them. The disciples were upset when they saw that Jesus was asleep, so they woke him saying “Do you not care that we are perishing?”
We can sit in church and sing that old hymn that asks “Does Jesus Care?” about the things that happen to us? That hymn gives us the resounding answer of ‘O yes, He cares, I know He cares.” But when your house is being battered, or your boat is filling, the temptation is to say “Hello? Anyone out there? Jesus, if you really cared about me, You’d be doing something. I’m here bailing and you’re sleeping.

GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU.

Jesus got up and stilled the storm. That was the EASY part. Then He turned to the 12 and said “Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”
Now those questions might seem harsh, considering their current reality, but He said that because His men had forgotten what He said at the beginning of the journey: “Let us go over to the other side.”
We might overlook that sentence, but it’s important. This let’s us know that Jesus didn’t intend for His disciples to get half way across the sea only to drown, and He doesn’t intend for that to happen with us, His disciples, now either.

The twelve for sure heard Jesus say this, but in the middle of their crisis, they forgot.
The Word was not abiding in them. The storm was now determining their theology. Jesus cared deeply about them, but they had lost sight of that fact.
When you’re drowning in the storms of life, remember what Jesus said.
Whenever it looks like God has gone to sleep on you, know that He has a purpose in mind. He hasn’t forgotten where you are and He hasn’t stopped caring.
He wants to see what you’re going to do with His word when the storm hits.

Make no mistake. It’s GOING to rain. The Word tells us that. The storms will come. It’s been aptly said that you’re either coming out of a storm, heading into a storm, or coming out of one. It IS going to rain. After Jesus stilled the storm, the disciples became afraid of Him. That’s okay. If you’re going to fear something, fear Jesus. Not the wind or the rain.

Did Jesus know the storm was coming? Of course He did. Did He send it to the disciples on purpose? Uh, yeah. Why? Well, to teach them the same lesson that we seem to need to learn over and over again. When you have Jesus, you have a foundation that is built with the storms of life in mind. Nothing suprises or overwhelms Him. With Jesus as the foundation of your life, you can endure the batterings that life brings. Nothing can capsize your boat when Jesus is in it.
God has already determined what is going to come your way, and He is sufficient for it. But you must learn to absorb and apply His word. God has been truthful in telling us that the trials are sure to come. And He has given us everything we need in His word and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to bring that word to our rememberance and help us apply it.
Tony Evans talked about how he had one of those punching bags when he was a kid. No matter how had he punched it, it would keep coming right back up because it was well anchored at the bottom. It had a foundation that was stronger than his hardest punch.
Sometimes, life is going to hit you with a balled-up fist and you may sway. But if Jesus and His word are your anchor, your foundation, you are going to come back. Sometimes satan is going to hit you, but if Christ and His word are your foundation, you will come back even though you may rock a little bit. How do we know? Because the scriptures tell us… “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

Also, congrats to our winner of the two tickets to the MTVArts produciton of the Addams Family! Kassandra and Dug of Mt. Vernon

Sharing some inspiration from Lysa Terkurst of Proverbs 31 Ministries today…
Can I whisper a truth to whatever hurt is in your heart tonight? Pushing Jesus away will not give you any of the comfort or relief you are looking for. Oh friend, I know this all too well.
Hope is only found in Him.
Stay with Jesus. Filter your situation through the reality of His love. And whatever you don’t understand, can’t process or feel like you can’t bear one more day … declare His name and speak His hope over those hardships.
Here is a prayer you can pray tonight if all you want to do is run:
“Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that all the power I need is in the name of Your Son, Jesus. I declare His name to be higher than any name I have given this situation. I will not declare hopelessness or fear or anxiety, or anything else threatening to make me run from Jesus. I declare all hope, all courage, all assurance, all power in Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

We’re also sharing some inspiration from our very own WNZR DJ, Cierra Strawser.
“Hey you, yes, you. Your worth is found in God. It doesn’t come from other people or material things. If you are struggling right now, I encourage you to talk to God. He will give you peace. Don’t believe it when people say, “you’re not good enough,” “you’re not worth it,” & “you can never do that.” They are LIES!
You’re beautiful just the way you are, you ARE good enough, you are WORTH it & you CAN do whatever you set your mind to. God is watching out for you, guiding, and directing you in every step of the way. So, lean on Him and keep your faith.
Citizen Way – When Im With You
“Everything’s not fine, and I’m not okay, but it’s nice to know I can come this way…
When I’m with you I feel the real me finally breaking through. It’s all because of you Jesus.””

Yes, I feel like we need a lot of encouragement today, so we shared a couple more stories…
Read here about Brian Johnston, a teacher at Clear Springs High School in Texas who made PB&J sandwiches earlier this year for his students who didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast before their AP exams!
And read here about Kirsten Koryciak, a Houston police officer who purchased groceries for a man who had a diabetic episode and had his groceries stolen.
“That’s part of also my job, is to care about people and to help people.”

Thanks for listening!
Have a safe and fun Independence day tomorrow!
