Word of the Day

Apple Pie Friday

apple pieThe first ever Apple Pie Baking Contest is coming to downtown Mount Vernon for the September First Friday

Find the details and rules by clicking here.  Thanks to COTC, MVNU, Kenyon and the Mount Vernon Grand Hotel for co-sponsoring this event!  Thanks to the Mount Vernon News for hosting the entry forms online.

Did you know Apple Pie is NOT an American original?  It was first conceived in 1381 in England.  The Dutch are also well-known for their apple crumb and apple lattice pies.

Originally, apple pie eaters DID NOT eat the crust.  Sugar was very scarce in the 14th century so crusts simply held the pie filling and were called coffins.  Yes, like the burial coffins.

Today’s Word of the Day is lattice, which means ‘a structure consisting of strips of wood or metal crossed and fastened together with square or diamond-shaped spaces left between, used typically as a screen or fence or as a support for climbing plants’ (or a pattern that looks like that). It can also mean, in physics, a regular repeated three-dimensional arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules.

Remembering Gene…

gene-wilder-picture-9-640x360

Gene Wilder died today.  He was 83.  I will always have find memories of him and his career because of two basic things: Willy Wonka (above) and his uncanny ability to make me crack up laughing.

I distinctly remember watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with my cousins, then listening to the soundtrack on 8-track in the car cracking up during the ‘Fizzy Lifting Drink’ scene, which had tons of burping. I also must confess, I laughed a lot the first time I saw Gene’s movie Silver Streak, especially the train station disguise scene. If you know the movie, you know what I mean.

Our trivia question was a two-parter about Gene today: what was his REAL first and last name?…and from what Big Ten school did he graduate? The answers? His real name was Jerome Silberman and he was a graduate of the University of Iowa.  He chose Gene because it was his mom’s name (Jeanne) and he loved the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder.

Our Word of the Day is rarefied (RAIR-uh-fied), which means very high or relating to a select group.

Commandments of using Social Media

struggles

Today we shared some of Pastor Craig Groeschel’s ’10 Commandments of Using Social Media’ from the book #Struggles. Read more about the book here.

  • Put God first in all you say and post – this doesn’t mean you have to start EVERY post with “this is the day the Lord has made,” but it means you approach each post and each conversation with Colossians 3:17‘s advice to represent Christ in ‘word and deed.’
  • Use social media to facilitate, not replace real relationships – social media can help us reconnect, but make sure you are using it to find face-to-face times where you can have real connection and conversation
  • Turn your virtual other cheek to posts that offend you – this is a tough one…it’s easy to lash out and respond when someone has wounded you. Proverbs 19:11 says our wisdom yields patience and it is to our glory to overlook an offense. Remember, that angry person probably needs our prayer rather than a nasty response.
  • Do not post out of emotion – another tough one. When in doubt, wait it out! We are constantly tempted to post when agitated or hurt, but we should post out of love.
  • Form your own opinions; do not just follow the crowd – God gave us a brain to think for ourselves. He gave us his Word to seek his will. He gave us his Spirit to guide us into truth (John 16:13). Resist the urge to blend in.

Today’s Word of the Day is panoptic, an adjective meaning to show or see the whole view at one time; like a panoramic view.

Congratulations to David of Utica who won our 4-pack of tickets to the Living Word Outdoor Drama.

Thanks for listening!
