9/11, Mystery Monday + Sonfest!

Today we took some time to pause and remember September 11th…our hearts and prayers continue to go out to the families that were directly impacted by the events of that day.

We also remind you to uplift our friends in Florida dealing with the impact of Hurricane Irma’s winds and rain.  Here is where you can go to help through the practical, on the ground ministry of Samaritan’s Purse.

Here are some fun facts about shortcake!!!

  • Shortcake is a sweet cake or biscuit (in the American sense: that is, a crumbly bread that has been leavened with baking powder or baking soda).
  • June 14th is National Strawberry Shortcake Day.
  • Strawberry shortcake parties became popular in the United States around 1850, as a celebration of the coming of summer.
  • The 2012 Pasadena Strawberry Festival featured the world’s largest strawberry shortcake. The cake used 3,240 pounds of strawberries and 280 pounds of whipped cream icing.
  • Shortcake is typically made with flour, sugar, baking powder or soda, salt, butter, milk or cream, and sometimes eggs. The dry ingredients are blended, and then the butter is cut in until the mixture resembles cornmeal. The liquid ingredients are then mixed in just until moistened, resulting in a shortened dough. The dough is then dropped in spoonfuls onto a baking sheet, rolled and cut like baking powder biscuits, or poured into a cake pan, depending on how wet the dough is and the baker’s preferences. Then it is baked at a relatively high temperature until set.

    We did a Strawberry Shortcake related trivia question today, and, wow, who knew there were so many Strawberry Shortcake characters?!

WNZR Leaders: Who Knew?

Today we featured the return of our full WNZR student staff for our annual Leadership Team retreat.

We visited with senior Dan Monnin, a Communication Studies major from Piqua, Ohio. Dan will be working with our WNZR Sports team this year, doing announcing and also as our Street Team coordinator.  Dan will also graduate this December!

Brooke Schnipke is another senior, a Public Relations major from Columbus Grove, Ohio, near Lima. Brooke is our News Director and also VP of Community Life for our Student Government Association.

Hannah Radke is back for her sophomore year, a Communication Studies major from Medina, Ohio.  Hannah will again be a co-host on the Afternoon Drive. She shared about her vacation to Ireland this summer and her excitement about being a small group co-leader this year at MVNU.

Eddie Dilts is our junior Morning Thing co-host and Production Director from Gahanna, Ohio.  Eddie has worked for WNZR this summer.  He’s a Journalism and Media Production major and Creative Writing minor, and will chair MVNU’s Friday Night Live student skit show this year!

Abby Fairless is a sophomore Communication Studies from Canton, Ohio.  Abby is our Promotions Director this year after serving as Office Assistant as a freshman.  Abby looks forward to greeting old friends and making new ones as the school year starts.

Our other LT members include our own Lilly Buckley and Alexander Young, plus Rachel Rinehart, Jordan Lewis, Mariah Kick, Torre Massie, Trevor Moore and Daria Swisher. Marcy and I are thrilled to have them as part of our student team!  Please keep us in your prayers as we begin the school year.

Our Word of the Day is perfunctory, an adjective which means something characterized by lack of interest or enthusiasm.

Ice Cream Sandwich Who Knew!

Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a staple summer treat! That’s right! The ice cream sandwich!
Here are some fun facts about the amazing summer snack…

  • Although ice cream sandwiches were made by hand and distributed by New York street vendors in the early 1940s, it wasn’t until 1945 that the first ice cream sandwiches were mass produced.
  • The current version was invented in 1945 by Jerry Newberg when he was selling ice cream at Forbes Field, in Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Pictures from the Jersey Shore circa 1905 “On the beach, Atlantic City”, show Ice Cream sandwiches were popular at 1c each.
  • August 2nd is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.
  • The Coolhaus food truck empire has taken ice cream sandwiches to a new level. You can buy one of their pre-packaged ice cream sandwiches, pints of ice cream, or hand-dipped ice cream bars at one of 4,000+ markets ranging from Whole Foods to Kroger and Safeway, in all 50 states
  • The ice cream sandwich ranks as the second best-selling ice cream novelty in America.
  • The average number of ice cream sandwiches eaten per second nationally is 48.
  • If all the ice cream sandwiches made last year were placed end to end, they would circle Earth 3 1/2 times.
  • The 30-44 age group buys the most ice cream sandwiches.
  • The eastern seaboard consumes almost 50 percent of all ice cream sandwiches.
  • The ice cream sandwich is so American it is sold at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

    Here’s a recipe for ice cream sandwiches from the Food Network…

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 (1-pint) containers ice cream (any flavor)

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
    2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. In another bowl, beat the butter, shortening, and sugar together with an electric mixer until fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla, beating until smooth. With a spoon, stir in the flour mixture, stirring just until you have a smooth dough.
    3. Using a 2 tablespoon cookie dough scoop, drop 6 mounds of dough on each baking sheet, leaving a couple inches between each cookie. Bake until the cookies are firm around the edges and soft in the middle, about 15 minutes. (For even baking, rotate the pans from top to bottom and back to front halfway through baking.) Using a spatula, transfer the cookies to a wire rack and cool completely.
    4. Meanwhile, turn the ice cream pints on their sides and use a serrated knife to slice through the containers, cutting each into 3 even rounds. Place the ice cream disks on a baking sheet and freeze until ready to assemble the sandwiches.
    5. To assemble, peel the cardboard from the ice cream disks and sandwich each disk between 2 cookies. Serve the sandwiches immediately, or wrap individually in plastic wrap and freeze up to 1 week.

    First Friday events are from 6 to 9pm in downtown Mount Vernon. The family-friendly activities include magician Jimmy Burcham, corn hole, a classic car cruise-in and music from Project Round Table on the public square stage.

    – TaVaci Select Performers followed by the Uncorrections will provide music at the South Stage – MVNU’s Buchwald Plaza Gazebo.
    – A presentation for the winner of the local Guns vs. Hoses Blood Drive for the American Red Cross. This competition is between our local police and fire departments.

    – A Hidden in Plain Sight event with KSAAT (Knox Substance Abuse Action Team) will take place at the Elks Lodge.
    – “Outside” – an exhibition by the Creative Art of Women (CAW) will be at MVNU’s Schnormeier Gallery. In this exhibition, CAW explores the external forces and exterior surfaces that make up the world- whether structural, anatomical, or metaphysical. Each artist wrestled with the theme of “OUTSIDE” through her own lens resulting in a diverse view of what makes up the world outside ourselves.

Ohio State Fair Mystery Monday!

We would like to congratulate our 4 adult prize basket winners from the Knox County Fair!

Hog #1 – Sarah Row of Mount Vernon won a 222 pound hog from Meredith Overholt from Fredericktown.  The purchase price was $3.75 a pound giving a total price of $832.50.  Meredith is a part of Country Critters 4-H Club. WNZR purchased this hog with Kokosing Inc.

Hog #2 – Theresa Cobb of Mount Vernon won a 236 pound hog from Natalie Caudill from Centerburg.  The purchase price was $3.00 a pound giving a total price of $708.  Natalie belongs to the Centerburg FFA. WNZR purchased this hog with A+ Autobrokers.

Hog #3 – Grace Pozderac of Mount Vernon won a 262 pound hog from Jeremiah McKinley from Fredericktown.  The purchase price was $3.00 a pound giving a total price of $786.  4-H Club is Green Valley Giants. (WNZR purchased this hog with Kokosing Inc.)

Hog #4 – Rebecca Comerford of of Fredericktown won a 223 pound hog from Riley Farrell from Newark. The purchase price was $3.00 a pound giving a total price of $669.  Riley is a member of the Lighthouse 4H Club. (WNZR purchased this hog with A+ Autobrokers.)

We’d like to give a big thank you to all the 4-H kids, and our sponsors who made this prize basket possible!

Today is raspberry cake day, and oh my goodness, I would like to take this moment to formally thank my old high school friend’s mom, Mrs. Ritz. She made the most delicious raspberry, white chocolate layer cake for our Fine Arts Gala every year, and it is still, hands down, the best cake I’ve ever had.

Here are some fun raspberry facts for you…

  • Raspberries are a type of fruit known as an aggregate fruit. Aggregate fruits have flowers with multiple ovaries and each ovary produces druplets around a core formed by the flower. Each druplet could actually be considered a separate fruit.
  • There are over 200 different known species of raspberries but only 2 species are grown on a large scale.
  • Raspberries contain more vitamin C than oranges, are super high in fibre, low in calories and supply you with a good dose of folic acid. In addition to that, they are high in potassium, vitamin A and calcium.
  • Scotland is an unlikely raspberry haven. It’s famous for its raspberry growing. In the late 1950s, raspberries were brought down from Scotland to London on a steam train known as the Raspberry Special.

The Keys of Prayer

 

Last week we talked about 10 ‘locks’ that hinder and muddy our prayer life. This week, we’re talking about 10 ‘keys’ to ‘unlock’ and enhance your prayer life.

  1. Praying persistently by asking, seeking and knocking (Matthew 7:7-8).  We have to make time to pray.  We shouldn’t hold back in our asking and we should be doing it every day.  Remember, He will answer when the time is right!
  2. Praying in faith.  We should pray with confidence; Jesus praised those who asked in faith. (Mark 11:24) “ 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”  Prayer is not a magic genie lamp – it’s based on our loving relationship with God, so we can more clearly come to know what He’s wanting to give us.  Where He’s wanting to take us.  We can believe and know that it’s coming to pass in His time.
  3. Praying in secret (Matthew 6:6). “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
    Galatians 6:7-8 reminds us not to pray for show; that is sowing to the flesh.  We need to seek Him with grounded humility.

  4. Praying according to God’s will.  We think of this as hidden and mysterious, but the Bible reminds us in Romans 12:1-2: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
    Prayer can show us where God is willing to go and where he’s not ready to go. In John 5:14-15 “14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” When we genuinely desire the knowledge of His will and are committed to following it, He will inspire us with a new level of assurance in prayer.

  5. Praying in Jesus’ name.  It’s not just a “sincerely yours” at the end of prayer, it’s reflective of an unselfish, God-honoring heartbeat within ourselves.  It’s a statement of of worship and admitted need. John 13:13-14 says “13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
    Praying in HIS name is to pray as HE WOULD.  We don’t approach God based on us, our authority or what we’ve done; it’s on what He’s done!

  6. Praying in agreement with other believers.  Matthew 18:19-20 19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”  Praying with other believers really zooms your prayer experiences off the charts! When we pray in a group with one heart and one mind. It pleases God.  He loves and honors the synergy with others when we pray.

  7. Praying while fasting.  This can mean going without food or other things, which allows us to focus.  Acts 14:23 reminds us of the fasting pattern of Paul and Barnabas.  It helps open our spirit to God instead of just feeding the flesh – seeking Him above all your other appetites.

  8. Praying from an obedient life. I John 3:21-22 “21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.”
    The intimacy you desire with God travels through the connective bond of your obedience to Him.  When we pray with an obedient heart, we can make requests without shame, working with Him and not working against Him.

  9. Praying while ABIDING in Christ and His word. This means staying close in fellowship with someone.  It involves spending time in God’s word, allowing it to fill our hearts and guide our thinking.  It also means staying clean before God, not allowing sin to build up or go unconfessed.  John 15:7 –“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.”

  10. Praying while delighting in the Lord.  When He is our greatest delight and first love above all else…then we’re in a position to have God bless us with our heart’s desires.  It’s only when we receive His salvation that we can truly begin to love Him. John 14:15 – “if you love me, keep my commands.”
    Psalm 37:4 – “take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” He takes delight in us when we do the same.

    Here’s the prayer from the end of the chapter!
    Lord, you are a good and loving God, You didn’t need to allow us to know you and pray to you, but you did.  I thank you that through Jesus, we can boldly approach your throne of grace in our time of need. Make me a strong and effective prayer warrior.  Help me walk closely with you, to pray in faith, in Jesus’ name and in agreement with other believers.  May I delight in you above all else. Give us grace and faith to trust you for great things. Prompt us with great requests so we can lift them back up to you and watch you answer them for our delight and for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
