Trouble, fear and courage

Today Todd and I continue our devotional series based on the book “Time With God for Fathers,” from Jack Countryman.  This devotional is meant to encourage fathers (and really all parents) with scripture that can guide them as they raise their children.

Our first scripture today deals with when trouble comes around.  It comes in all shapes and sizes, but it’s what we do with trouble that really matters.  Depend on God for wisdom!

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

We’re also sharing about fear today.  We all deal with aspects of it and need to remember to walk in the power of the Lord’s spirit:

Psalm 27: 1 and 3
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?

Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.

We also are sharing about how we can get the courage to be a father of integrity.  Honesty and integrity, as Jack writes, are “the blueprint for the man God wishes you to be.”  Yes, integrity is God-ordained, but it also benefits and blesses us.

Proverbs 11:1-3
Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight.
When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom.
The integrity of the upright will guide them,
But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.

Here are the questions Lilly asked and the answers I gave, for each test.

Shake Test:

  1. Is this a common household item?  – Yes!
  2. Is this something that I would have in my apartment? – Yes!

Smell Test:

  1. Is this edible? At some point, yes.
  2. Is this a food item that people keep in their cars for emergencies? Not really, they could – but I doubt it.

Touch Test:

  1.  Was the item in this bag chips?  Yes!
  2. (She knew it was a bag right away)

The answer: A empty bag of salt and cracked pepper chips!

Hope, wisdom and forgiveness…

Today Todd and I continue our devotional series based on the book “Time With God for Fathers,” from Jack Countryman.  This devotional is meant to encourage fathers (and really all parents) with scripture that can guide them as they raise their children.

The first scripture today dealt with our eternal hope in I Peter 1:3-5:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance [a]incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

It reminds us that despite the challenges of parenting, we always have that eternal hope and nothing can take that away!

Our second passage was about the precious commodities of wisdom and understanding in Proverbs 4:5-7:

Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
Love her, and she will keep you.
Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.

Then we also thanked God for his amazing forgiveness in 2 Corinthians 5:17-18:

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not [a]imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Celebrate the Celebration of Life Month!

Today on the Afternoon Drive, we celebrated the Celebration of Life month and talked with you about how you can celebrate it too!

Celebration of Life day was actually yesterday, but we celebrate it all month through. Here’s a little history on the month…
Food for Health International is a company that focuses on producing and distributing whole food and preparation for emergencies. With its unique techniques and methods they work towards providing rich, healthful food at reduced prices. As part of their mission, they’ve introduced the Celebration of Life Month to help remind everyone that taking care of our bodies is taking care of our souls, and helps us celebrate every day.

Here’s a couple tips from Days of the Year on how to celebrate this celebration and read the whole article here!

  1. Start off by taking a few mental health days, just take the time to sit back and relax, and reassess the past year and what you’re going to be doing moving forward with this year. Enjoy your favorite leisure activity, and do whatever it is that helps you recharge when things are just getting too crazy.
  2. When you’re sitting at work, be sure to do everything you can to remind yourself that you are not your job. By not identifying yourself with your work, you can enjoy the day free from the idea that your success there measures your worth. Work is just another passing of the day, and at the end of the day you need to remember to celebrate the glories of life.

We also shared a few more ways to celebrate the celebration from our friends at Victim Services BGP! Check out these tips and read the whole article here!

1. Laugh
 – Find something funny that makes you laugh everyday. Laughter dissolves anxiety and heals the spirit. Find a place to laugh out loud and celebrate your life with a good cackle.

2. Write – Keep a daily record of the good things that have happened. You found a parking space, arrived early despite traffic, won a lawsuit, lost a pound – tally each victory, large and small – then celebrate to gain more to celebrate.

3. Learn – Discover a new word (azygous), a funny fact, a historical event; stay curious and keep learning. Increase your knowledge to celebrate your life. Remember, if you are not gaining intelligence you are losing intelligence.

Of course, for our Who Knew question today, we gave you a chance to win a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley! Here was today’s question…
Q: We’re telling you that laughing and smiling are good ways to help celebrate the celebration of life month. Psychology Today shared an article called the “Nine Superpowers of Your Smile” which you can read here. Name any of the 9 ‘superpowers’ that you gain by smiling.
Answers:
1. Smiling can make you look younger.
2. Smiling can make you look thinner.
3. Smiling elevates your mood and creates a sense of well-being.
4. Smiling induces more pleasure in the brain more than chocolate.
5. Even a forced smile can lead to a mood boost.
6. Smiles can predict fulfillment in marriage.
7. Smiling makes you seem courteous, likable, and competent.
8. The span of a person’s smile can predict life span.
9. Smiling is contagious
