Pursue Excellence

Good afternoon! It was a rainy one here in Mt. Vernon, but we kept dry here in the studio and talked a lot today about pursuing excellence. In the world today, you can settle for being just okay and mediocre. We as Christians are called to be extraordinary!

Act 4:23-31 was a key set of verses that we talked about today. The main point that all these verses make is the power of prayer. When in stressful and hard situations, the first thing that we need to do is pray. God is listening and He cares.
Prayer is an important first step in any difficult situation.

“23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:
“‘Why do the nations rage
    and the people plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
against the Lord
    and against his anointed one.
27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

Our WinterJam trivia question today was: In what church did the band Newsong get started? The answer was Morningside Baptist Church!

Our word of the day was willowwacks!
Willowwacks are a wooded, uninhabited areas.
This word is slang which originated in New England.

My last encouragement for you today came from 2nd Timothy.
2nd Timothy 1:7 says: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

We are called to be extraordinary and we are given power and love! We are called to be bold in our lives. Be like Peter and John when they prayed for boldness in their proclamation of Christ and His power. Pursue excellence.  Don’t be ordinary.

Game Time Tuesday 1/10/16

Today for Game Time Tuesday we played Name That Tune for a chance to win a 5$ gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.  Our song today was Jesus by Chris Tomlin, an our winner was Lori of Gambier.

Here comes…spring?

Today was the first day of spring semester courses at MVNU…but weather-wise, it’s NOT spring! Nevertheless, everyone’s back in the classroom and here’s our lineup for the Afternoon Drive:

Mondays – Joe Rinehart and Eddie Dilts
Tuesdays – Eddie and Hannah Radke
Wednesdays – Joe and Hannah
Thursdays – Joe and Lilly Buckley
Fridays – Joe and Lilly

Mystery Monday’s trivia question today was: Since it’s Apricot Day, what country is the world’s largest producer of dried apricots?  The answer – Turkey, with over 811 tons a year. Congratulations to Ruthie from Mount Vernon, who wins the $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Our first Winter Jam Trivia question was: Colton Dixon was on what season of American Idol?  The answer? The 11th season.  Pam from Fredericktown was our winner!

Word of the Day – crepitate (verb) to make a crackling sound.

Praise for the Good Shepherd

Today I shared thoughts about Jesus as the Good Shepherd.  I’m thankful for a God who continues to pursue us, despite our tendency to run away, get lost, or try to do things on our own.

Luke 15 shares the three parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son.  They remind us of four very important points:

  • God loves lost people and seeks them out; EVERY person is important to God
  • God celebrates when a lost person is found
  • We may turn our backs on God, but He never turns his back on us
  • God has compassion for the lost – he understands how sometimes how hard it is for us to come home – but still welcomes us with open arms!

John 10 reminds us that Jesus has the authority to be our Shepherd because He and the father are one!

Today’s Word of the Day is maelstrom, which we shared right after the song ‘Eye of the Storm,’ – it means a powerful often violent whirlpool. In the eye of the storm, he remains in control!

Who Knew New Years!

Good afternoon! It’s a little chilly here in town today, but we stayed warm and talked all about New Year’s traditions today! We all know that we drop the ball in New York at midnight, but we talked about some wacky and wild things that states drop at midnight! We also talked about some New Years traditions from different countries, as well as ways to reach your resolutions! Read on to find out more!

You dropped what!??!

New York is home to the most famous ‘drop’ on New Years, but other states have their fun with it as well! We talked about some states that celebrate by dropping things that might be a little out of the ordinary!
Hawaii: Honolulu takes a flavorful twist on the New Years Eve ball drop by raising a “Hala Kahiki”, or Pineapple, up into the air. Sip on some pineapple wine and watch this oversized fruit drop in celebration of the oncoming year!
Pennsylvania: Mechanicsburg, PA rightfully celebrates New Years Eve with the dropping of a large lighted wrench. The event always includes refreshments and music that the whole family will love, as well as some delicious food.
Arizona: Flagstaff, Arizona is brought in by dropping a giant 70-pound glowing metal pinecone. The citizens of Flagstaff gather in the historic downtown area and watch the cone fall from the bough of the Hotel Weatherford.
Georgia: Although not as juicy as a normal Georgia peach, this 800-pound monster is still impressive. The peach has been dropped in Atlanta on New Years Eve since 1989 and the event always includes a full day of festivities.
Pennsylvania: Duncannon, Pennsylvania is all about fun when it comes to their New Years Eve drop tradition, with a giant 10-foot sled instead of a ball.
In Bethlehem, PA, Peeps, the signature marshmallow treats, receive recognition on more than just Easter. In fact, an entire festival is named after the cute little candies. Peepfest takes place in late December and includes a 5k race, live music, and other festivities.
Idaho: In another state famous for a semi-round piece of food, Boise, Idaho hosts a New Years Eve party featuring a giant potato. This is a fairly new festival that began in 2013 and has already seen great success. The event includes a professional fireworks show, live music, and plenty of food. You would not regret attending this event and being named what they call, “spec-taters.”

Today our trivia question was related to one of our topics! Our question was: “What object does Honolulu, Hawaii drop for their New Year celebration? The answer was a pineapple! Word of the day!

Today’s word was a longer one, and it was ‘preponderance’. This word is a noun, and it means ‘fact or quality of being preponderant; superiority in weight, power, numbers, etc.’
“The preponderance of votes is against the proposal.”

Game Time Tuesday!

Good Afternoon! I hope you’re having a great Tuesday afternoon! 2017 is getting into full swing and Eddie and I had an awesome show for you today!

RESOLUTIONS…
We talked a little bit about New Year’s resolutions today on the show, and Eddie talked about his resolution. He said that his goal this year is to have ‘delayed gratification’ and by that he meant that he would get things done that aren’t incredibly exciting with a good attitude that will lead to happiness later. This was quite the profound resolution! Hopefully, everyone here at WNZR sticks to their resolutions this year! WORD OF THE DAY…
Our word of the day today was ‘ennui’ which is an old French word  thar made its’ way onto the scene around 1660-1670.
Ennui is a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest; boredom.
And to use this word in a sentence: “The endless lecture produced an unbearable ennui.”

Mystery Monday!

Today was the first show of 2017, and it was a great one!

Professor Rinehart talked today about how important prayer is, and how prayer should be your first priority. His advice was to keep prayer at the forefront of your mind this year. We serve a God that cares deeply about us, so don’t think that your prayers are falling on deaf ears, God hears every prayer and He will answer them according to His will and in His time.
Psalm 17:6 says
“I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.”

New Years was this weekend, and you know what that means? Resolutions!
My New Years resolutions were to stop drinking so much soda and start drinking more water. I know soda is bad for me, so I’d really like to cut back a little. I also want to get my drivers license this year. I don’t like driving all that much, but I need to get my license so my parents don’t have to drive me everywhere. Professor Rinehart said that his resolution was just to keep prayer as a first priority, which is a great resolution.

It was Mystery Monday today! Professor hid the item today and I had to guess  what it was. and the item was a razor!
We learned that it was not a writing utensil, and it also was not a typical office supply.
I said that it was small, light, and it didn’t make any distinguishable sound when I shook the box. When i did the smell test, it didn’t really smell like anything! Whoops. I asked if Professor brought it from home or if it was from the station or if it was something he brought from home. He told me it was from home. I also asked if it was an item you’d find in a kitchen, and he also said no. The touch test let me know that it was a razor! Thanks to Professor for putting the protective cover over it for me! We found out that it was an item that you would find in a bathroom, and also, that this item is normally used in tandem with something else (shaving cream in this case). Congratulations to Ben of Mt. Vernon who called in and got the answer right! He received a $10 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Our word of the day today was yeasayer. We’ve all heard of naysayer before, but a yeysayer is a person with an optimistic and confident outlook, a person who habitually agrees with or is submissive to others.

Praise Thursday

 

Good Afternoon! Happy Praise Thursday!

I didn’t actually plan a theme for today, but my thoughts ended up tying together! Today’s Praise Thursday was all about God’s loyalty and how much He cares for us as His children. I talked about how when you pray, God listens, and when you’re walking down a path, God is guiding you. God has given us a spirit of power and love so that we can show His love.

I talked about Lauren Daigle’s song ‘First’ and the meaning behind it.
She says “When we are finding our identity and security in Him and constantly seeking Him first, His desires first, His will first, His character first— when we are found in that, nothing else can come and takes its place. Fear can’t come and survive because His love pushes it out. God’s perfect love is what we need to focus on. Stay focused on His Kingdom. I started finding my identity in His love, and that has helped me get over my fear of man, my fear of disappointment and my striving for perfectionism.”

I gave a brief bit of encouragement today that came in the form of 2nd Timothy 1:7.
It says: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”
My encouragement for you from this verse was that we are called to love genuinely and speak the gospel boldly and without hindrance. God is giving us the strength to share His love and His promises with the world. We are called as Christians to be the light of this world, like it says in Matthew 5:14. So there is your encouragement that you can go out, boldly, and proclaim the name of Christ.

I found a really great devotional that dealt with God hearing our prayers. People can sometimes think that prayers fall on deaf ears, but this devotional gives me assurance that God is always listening. You can read the devotion from rightfromtheheart.org in its entirety here.

I talked a little bit about Psalm 23 today, and dived a little bit deeper into a couple of my favorite verses. Here’s a link to the whole chapter of Psalm 23.
In the first it says ‘The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.’ In other versions, it says ‘The Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing.’ This is really important to me because it means that since I have God as my shepherd, I lack no good thing. God is providing for me, and I should not be in want because God, in His time, will supply me with everything I need!
I also talked about verse 3, where it talks about God leading us in paths of Righteousness. Paths can be a scary concept, but God promises that He is leading us in paths of Righteousness for HIS name’s sake. The path may be dark, full of twists, turns, and uncertainty, but the one thing you can be certain of is that it’s a path of righteousness and that God is guiding you every step of the way.

Newreleasetoday got a chance to sit down with Francesca Battistelli and talk to her about her song ‘Heaven Everywhere”. They asked her what bible verses really influenced the song, she said “Over the past couple of years, my husband and I have been memorizing the Book of James. James 5:7-9 fits the message of this song: “Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” You can read the whole interview here! 

My final encouragement for you today is that God is stronger than the powers of this world. When the world is attacking you and trying to get you to fall, just stand up and say ‘I am a child of God, and you cannot shake me. You can throw at me what you will, but my feet are firmly planted in the love of Christ, and there is nothing you can do that will shake my faith. God is stronger than the world. The creator of the universe is fighting feverishly for me! Nothing in this world has more strength or power than my God. So if the world is fighting to get you down, just let it know that God is winning.
