Today’s W food…

Is watermelon! Now that we’re turning the corner into warmer weather, expect to see more of this flowering fruit around, in both its natural state and watermelon-flavored things.

Some of the health benefits of watermelon? Healthline.com shares these:

It contains only 46 calories per cup but is high in vitamin C, vitamin A and many healthy plant compounds.

Drinking water is an important way to keep your body hydrated. Interestingly, watermelon is 92% water, and high water content is one of the reasons why fruits and vegetables help you feel full. The combination of water and fiber means you’re eating a good volume of food without a lot of calories.

One cup (154 grams) of watermelon includes these vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin C: 21% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI)
  • Vitamin A: 18% of the RDI
  • Potassium: 5% of the RDI
  • Magnesium: 4% of the RDI
  • Vitamins B1, B5 and B6: 3% of the RDI

Watermelon is also high in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene. Plus, it has citrulline, an important amino acid.

Here’s a link to an easy watermelon sorbet recipe from thethingswellmake.com

Here’s the link to the CNN article I shared about a possible shortage of gasoline trucks this summer.

Who Am I? Trivia…

  • I was born today in 1964 in Cincinnati
  • I attended Moeller High School and got a scholarship to play both football and baseball at Michigan
  • I eventually stayed with baseball
  • I played for my hometown team, winning a World Series in 1990
  • I was the National League MVP in 1995 and a 12-time all-star
  • I was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012
  • The team retired my number, 11.

I am former Cincinnati Red, Barry Larkin. Congratulations to Ron from Mount Vernon, who guessed correctly and wins the $5 gift card to Everlasting Cup.

Unexpected blessings

Here’s a short passage from James Banks in Our Daily Bread, which takes us from Peter Pan to Ruth. Read ‘Hard Ground and Tender Mercy’ by clicking here.

If you had fingers the size of hot dogs, name two activities you might have trouble doing…
1- typing
2- put on clothes or shoes
3- sewing
4- braiding or combing your hair
5- picking up things

Congratulations to Gabriel from Mount Vernon, who guessed correctly and wins the $5 gift card to Everlasting Cup.
