Corvettes, Ceviche and BINGO!

Today’s Who Knews:

  • On June 28, 1953, workers at a Chevrolet factory in Flint, Michigan, built the inaugural Corvette. Two days later, the first Corvette was proudly driven off the production line, marking the completion of one of the 300 produced that year.
  • Today also celebrates the seafood appetizer Ceviche, one of my personal favorites (and I enjoy making it). Ceviche (say-VEE-chay) is popular in the Caribbean regions and in Latin America. It is made from raw, white fish (cod, sea bass, even shrimp or tilapia), marinated overnight in lime and/or lemon juice, which actually cooks the raw fish. I like to mix the lime juice with cilantro, a little bit of salsa or pico de gallo, a pinch of salt and a pinch of garlic salt or garlic cloves. Check out some ceviche recipes here from Cooking Classy.
  • yesterday was the birthday of B-I-N-G-O! The game originated in 16th century Italy, gaining popularity in Europe before it evolved into the modern version. Edwin S. Lowe introduced Bingo in the US in the early 20th century.

Who Am I?

  • I was born June 28,1703, in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England
  • I was the 15th of 19 children, one of nine who survived infancy
  • I was rescued from a fire when I was five years old after becoming trapped
  • I was ordained a deacon after finishing my degrees at Christ Church, Oxford
  • I was a member of the Holy Club with my brother Charles, later called the Oxford Methodists
  • My evangelical experience on May 24, 1738 at Aldersgate Street is still celebrated in churches today
  • I believed and preached on personal holiness and social engagement, many times called the Wesleyan Holiness movement

I am…John Wesley! Congratulations to Dan of Mount Vernon, who guessed correctly and wins the Katy Nichole CD, ‘Jesus Changed My Life.’

Forgiveness…today and every day

Today we reflect on Colossians 3:13 since it’s Forgiveness Day…

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”

…and remember, every day can be forgiveness day! Monica La Rose shared a wonderful devotional called ‘A Future With Forgiveness,’ that reflects on how South Africa tried to move forward after years of racial injustice. Read it by clicking here!

Keeping up with Because I Said I Would

Today on The Afternoon Drive, Zoe shared the interview Alyssa Sidle did with Alex Sheen with Because I Said I would. Here is a little bit from Because I Said I Would

“It’s hard to overstate what has been lost: our computers, program supplies, recreation equipment, merchandise inventory, fundraising resources, event supplies, washers and dryers, sheets, towels, blankets, cleaning supplies, audio/video equipment… It’s all gone.

During this challenging time, as we rebuild what has been lost, your support becomes invaluable in sustaining our mission.”

If you would like to learn more about their organization or how to donate, please visit HERE

Zoe also talked about national selfie day and world music day!

World Music Day originally launched several decades ago in France. In 1982 the Ministry of Culture in France developed a clever idea to celebrate the wonders of music. They wanted free, live music to be available to everybody no matter what their heritage or background. Usually you have to pay for tickets to music festivals, but not with World Music Day! Blanca teams up with a Hall-of-Famer; Mac sings live!

Today’s Artist News (from JesusFreakHideout.com)

ORLANDO, FL – Blanca played a few songs during a very intimate service with Kurt and Brenda Warner, their family, and children with life-threating illnesses and their families on Sunday, June 11 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in Orlando.

This event took place at the end of the 21st annual “We’re Going To Disney World!” week-long trip with Make-A-Wish and Dream Factory, where the group visited Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Magic Kingdom.

Following Blanca’s music, Kurt Warner offered a message of faith and hope to the families.

Kurt and Brenda Warner’s Foundation is called First Things First. They have hosted 167 Wish/Dream kids and their families on this trip since 2002.

NASHVILLE, TN – Mac Powell, former front-man for Third Day released Live From Red Rocks on this past Friday June 16th. There will be songs from his solo career and some old Third Day Songs as well. For more info you can click HERE.

“While I love making records, my favorite part of this job has always been touring and singing along with fans in person,” shares Mac Powell. “I’ve played Red Rocks four times throughout my career, but last year was the first time I performed at the historic venue as a solo artist AND I got to play with my daughter, son, and son-in-law. It was such a special night that I wanted to share it with everyone. I’m so excited for you to relive this special night with us at Red Rocks.”

We sing to the God who always makes a way
‘Cause He hung up on that cross
Then He rose up from that grave
My God’s still rolling stones away

The song? “House of the Lord” from Phil Wickham. Congratulations to Michele from Mount Vernon, who guessed correctly and wins the Anne Wilson CD, ‘My Jesus,’ and two one-day passes to the Hiawatha Water Park and Pool in Mount Vernon.

Believe For It!

This is today’s song-inspired Monday Motivation! From the incredible CeCe Winans!

They say this mountain can’t be moved (refers to Matthew 17:20 and 21:21; Mark 11:23 – ‘faith like a mustard seed’)
They say these chains will never break
But they don’t know You like we do
There is power in Your name (Jeremiah 32:17 – ‘nothing is too hard for you!’)

We’ve heard that there is no way through
We’ve heard the tide will never change
They haven’t seen what You can do
There is power in Your name
So much power in Your name (Hebrews 1:3 – ‘The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word’)

Move the unmovable
Break the unbreakable
God we believe
God we believe for it

From the impossible
We’ll see a miracle (Genesis 18:14 – Sarah will have a son)
God we believe
God we believe for it

We know that hope is never lost…oh…
For there is still an empty grave
God we believe no matter what
There is power in Your name (Matthew 19:26 – “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”)
So much power in Your name

Move the unmovable
Break the unbreakable
God we believe
God we believe for it

From the impossible
We’ll see a miracle
God we believe
God we believe for it (hey)

You are the way
When there seems to be no way
We trust in You
God You have the final say, yeah

Inspiration from the Evangelism Linebacker!

While at the Momentum conference, we got a chance to hear from Dr. Derwin Gray, pastor of Transformation Church in South Carolina. Read more about him and his blog, ‘Just Marinating,’ here.

Derwin also played five years in the National Football League for the Colts and the Panthers. Some call him the ‘Evangelism Linebacker.’

Derwin challenged us to think about our greatest passions in life…and to consider…is knowing God and making Him known at the top of that list? Are we a source of encouragement rooted in Christ?

He challenged us to lives of self-giving humility.

He reminded us that the God we serve never runs out of mercy, so are we running to mercy?  Ephesians 2: 1-4 is one example in scripture where we know our God is rich in mercy. Giving compassion or forgiveness when it is within our power to punish or harm.

Derwin challenged us that the only time we should look down on somebody is when we are extending a hand down to LIFT THEM UP!

And what about grace? The free and unmerited favor of God. Derwin asked a direct question: are we more amazed by the grace of Jesus? Or more amazed by us? Wow. Sometimes we can get stuck in what WE’VE done and what WE’VE achieved. Derwin said something that has been stuck in my mind: we have nothing to boast about. It’s ALL HIS, we just said yes!

So think about this today…is your fragrance grace, mercy and kindness? Or something else? Do you see what God sees?

God saw a broken and bloodied world, stepped in as Jesus, and took the breaking and the blood! Praise God for people like Derwin challenging us to a better way.

Remember your deadline for getting your dad registered for ‘Take Dad to Dinner’ is tonight at 11:59pm 🙂

Click here to get to the nomination page. The random drawing of four winners is tomorrow on The Morning Thing.

Thanks for listening!
