Apple Pie Friday

apple pieThe first ever Apple Pie Baking Contest is coming to downtown Mount Vernon for the September First Friday

Find the details and rules by clicking here.  Thanks to COTC, MVNU, Kenyon and the Mount Vernon Grand Hotel for co-sponsoring this event!  Thanks to the Mount Vernon News for hosting the entry forms online.

Did you know Apple Pie is NOT an American original?  It was first conceived in 1381 in England.  The Dutch are also well-known for their apple crumb and apple lattice pies.

Originally, apple pie eaters DID NOT eat the crust.  Sugar was very scarce in the 14th century so crusts simply held the pie filling and were called coffins.  Yes, like the burial coffins.

Today’s Word of the Day is lattice, which means ‘a structure consisting of strips of wood or metal crossed and fastened together with square or diamond-shaped spaces left between, used typically as a screen or fence or as a support for climbing plants’ (or a pattern that looks like that). It can also mean, in physics, a regular repeated three-dimensional arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules.

Game Time Tuesday

Song Poetry lyrics today:
You have fallen so far now
You don’t even know how you are going to survive
(But) Just above the horizon
A new light is shining, breaking through the darkest night…

The answer? Third Day and ‘Lift Up Your Face.’ Congratulations to Betsy of Mount Vernon who wins the $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Our Name That Tune song was Tree63’s ‘Blessed Be Your Name.’ Congratulations to Amy of Mount Vernon who also won a Troyer’s certificate!

Today’s Word of the Day is matriculate (muh-TRICK-you-late), a verb that means to enroll in a college or a university to pursue a degree, or to register a coat of arms.

Thanks for listening!

Remembering Gene…

gene-wilder-picture-9-640x360

Gene Wilder died today.  He was 83.  I will always have find memories of him and his career because of two basic things: Willy Wonka (above) and his uncanny ability to make me crack up laughing.

I distinctly remember watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with my cousins, then listening to the soundtrack on 8-track in the car cracking up during the ‘Fizzy Lifting Drink’ scene, which had tons of burping. I also must confess, I laughed a lot the first time I saw Gene’s movie Silver Streak, especially the train station disguise scene. If you know the movie, you know what I mean.

Our trivia question was a two-parter about Gene today: what was his REAL first and last name?…and from what Big Ten school did he graduate? The answers? His real name was Jerome Silberman and he was a graduate of the University of Iowa.  He chose Gene because it was his mom’s name (Jeanne) and he loved the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder.

Our Word of the Day is rarefied (RAIR-uh-fied), which means very high or relating to a select group.

Thanks for listening!

Praise Thursday – Forgiveness (Matthew West)

Today was Praise Thursday on the Afternoon Drive. We kicked off a new series where we pick a song that we play on the station, and then dive into the story behind and meaning of the song.

Today’s focus was on Forgiveness by Matthew West. I shared the letter that inspired Matthew to write this song, plus his response on the power of forgiveness, both of which you can find here.

If you head over here, you can find an interview with Matthew West where he shared some more of the story and some verses that inspired the song.

The reason I chose Forgiveness for this week is because today is Kiss and Make Up Day, a holiday encouraging forgiveness. You can read all about that here.

Our Word of the Day was stultify (stuhl-tuh-fahy), a verb meaning to make, or cause to appear, foolish or ridiculous. You can read more on that here.

Have a great Thursday evening!
