CANDY MONTH Mystery Monday

I love candy, but who doesn’t?
Today on the show, Rachel and I talked all about candy!
Check out these fun facts!

  • The man who invented cotton candy, William James Morrison, was a dentist.
  • Fairy Floss was the original name of cotton candy.
  • Snickers, one of the most popular candy bars today, was named after the Mars family horse
  • A lollipop, which was invented by George Smith in 1908, was named after Lolly Pop, a racing horse.
  • Easter is one of the big candy holidays and each year candy companies make more than 90 million Easter bunnies and 16 billion jelly beans just for the one day holiday.
  • Almost everyone eats the ears off of their chocolate Easter bunnies before they eat anything else.
  • Across the country, red jelly beans are most commonly chosen as the favorite amongst children.
  • Almost every child in America will go trick or treating this year (93%).
  • If you laid out all the candy corn produced in a year from end to end, you could circle the Earth more than 4 times.
  • More than 75% of the candy given out during trick or treating is bite-size chocolate bars.

Our Mystery Monday Mystery Question was as follows…
In early 1995, Mars ran a promotion in which consumers could vote what color M&M replaced the tan M&M. What color ended up replacing the tan M&M.

The answer was BLUE! Congrats to Amy of Mt. Vernon who answered correctly!

Our word of the day today was, aptly, confectionery!
noun || con·fec·tion·ery || \kən-ˈfek-shə-ˌner-ē\
This is the confectioner’s art or business, sweet foods (such as candy or pastry, or  a confectioner’s shop!

Thanks for listening!

A Sugary Who Knew Wednesday

Today was Who Knew Wednesday on the show, and we decided to do something a little different.

Joe talked about his experience in the bulk candy store at the Ohio State Fair on Monday, so we opened the phones and asked you to call in and tell us what candies you would pick if you could go into a candy store and choose 8 different 4 ounce bags of candy.

Joe chose Indian Corn, Mike & Ike’s, Swedish Fish, Maple Nut Goodies, peach rings, honey roaster cashews, orange slices, and Reese’s Pieces.

I said that I would get 3 bags of dark chocolate covered raisins, and then one bag each of peach rings, sour gummy worms, M&Ms, blue raspberry Sour Patch Kids, and blue raspberry sour tape.

We received several calls from people saying they would choose Chick-o-sticks, black licorice, chocolate covered raisins, malt balls, Bit-O-Honey, JuJu Fish, Sno Caps, Skittles, Laffy Taffy, Swedish Fish, Twix, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, and gummy bears.

Joe also shared a list of the top 25 selling candies, which you can find over here.

Our Word of the Day was forswear, a verb meaning to promise to stop doing or give up something. You can read more on that here.

Plus, don’t forget to head over here to see all the information on where we will be during the next week of On The Road with Big Blue.

Have an awesome Wednesday evening!

Candy-Crazed Who Knew Wednesday

Today whalloween-candy-by-phanton-kittyas a very sweet (pun intended) Afternoon Drive!

Since it was Who Knew Wednesday and Gummy Worm Day (you can read about that here), I decided that I would combine the two and spend the whole show talking about CANDY! (Plus, Joe’s still out for the rest of the week, so there’s basically no rules, right?)

I first filled you in on some gummy worm fun facts in honor of the holiday. I also tried to tell a gummy-worm inspired joke that I messed up… You can find all those facts and more jokes over here.

I then shared “The Abridged History of Popular Candy in America”, which you can find here.

I also read part of USA Today’s list of the Top 50 Candies of All Time, and you can check out the entire list over here to see where your favorite candies rank.

Then, I shared some Sweet Tooth Candy Trivia that you can find here.

Plus, I shared this list of the most popular candies for different decades from 1950-1980.

I also took the What Candy Are You Quiz, where you can find out what candy best fits your personality. I got Cry Baby’s because I’m “tough, adventurous, love to try new things, and quirky”. You can take the quiz for yourself over here. Leave a comment below letting us know what candy you got!

Our Word of the Day was calumny, a noun that means a misrepresentation intended to harm another’s reputation. You can read more on that over here.

And don’t forget to check out all the videos our Big Blue Crew put together from the Nazarene Youth Conference in Louisville, Kentucky last week! You can watch all six videos over here.

Thanks for listening and have an awesome Wednesday evening!
