Game Time Tuesday!

One of our uplifting news stories was football related today, because the preseason is just getting started! Check out LaDainian Tomlinson’s acceptance speech, as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame here.

Our word of the day today was ‘immense’
adjective // ih-MENSS
This means marked by greatness especially in size or degree; especially : transcending ordinary means of measurement, or supremely good.

Just how big is something if it is immense? Huge? Colossal? Humongous? Ginormous? Or merely enormous? Immense is often used as a synonym of all of the above and, as such, can simply function as yet another way for English speakers to say “really, really, really big.” Immense is also used, however, in a sense which goes beyond merely really, really, really big to describe something that is so great in size or degree that it transcends ordinary means of measurement. This sense harks back to the original sense of immense for something which is so tremendously big that it has not been or cannot be measured. This sense reflects the word’s roots in the Latin immensus, from in-(“un-“) and mensus, the past participle of metiri (“to measure”).

Events, Games and the World Wide Web!

We also celebrated World Wide Web Day today, so in honor of that, here’s a few fun facts about the good old world wide web!

The Internet’s first website went online on Aug. 6, 1991.
Berners-Lee and his fellow CERN team members launched http://info.cern.ch with a landing page that only contained 153 words. It defined the World Wide Web (“W3”) as “a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents” and contained 25 links to basic additional information about the pioneering initiative.

The internet is not the web and the web is not the internet.
The internet was a thing long before the web and the web wouldn’t exist without the internet. The internet, the roots of which can be traced as far back to the invention of the modem in 1958, is a massive infrastructure that bridges millions of computers throughout the globe. The World Wide Web is a vast system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed on the internet.

Billions of people surf the web. Of the world’s 7.1 billion people, an estimated 2.4 billion people go online today. That’s 37.7 percent of the world’s total population. About six out of seven people across the globe have internet access. Approximately 70 percent of internet users surf the web every day.

Americans rock the web the most. Users in the U.S. account for 78.6 percent of global web usage, trailed by Australia (67.6 percent), Europe (63.2 percent), Latin America/Caribbean (42.9 percent), Middle East (40.2 percent), Asia (25.7 percent) and Africa (15.6).  Surprisingly, some 24 nations remain completely offline.

Gold, Games and Elephants!

Good afternoon! I hope you’re having a great day!

For uplifting news today, we talked about one of my favorite bigger animals, the elephant, and a 94 year old man who donned his flying jacket one last time!

“Elephants in northern India have been sporting colorful woolen jumpers knitted by local women. Staff at the Wildlife SOS elephant sanctuary in Mathura were worried that the animals might not survive the freezing winter nights. All 20 animals there were rescued from abusive owners, and some remain physically frail. When the village women heard of the elephants’ plight, they knitted a bulk load of huge, pajama-like garments to keep them warm.”

A WWII fighter pilot has taken to the skies for the final time, at the age of 94. Dr Sandy Saunders suffered 40% burns when his plane crashed in 1945. He was given a skin graft by the pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald Mcindoe, joining a group of patients known as the “Guinea Pig Club”. Saunders, who has terminal cancer, donned a flying jacket and scarf to fly a vintage Tiger Moth for a new BBC documentary. “It just brings it all back,” he said. “I wish I were young again.”

Whizzo!
This is British slang. which means absolutely first-rate; superb; excellent. It’s used as an exclamation of approval,wonder, or pleasure.
Like many slang terms, the source or sources of whizzo are hard to trace precisely. The final -o is the common suffix used to form colloquial nouns and adjectives. The whizz part of whizzo may derive from whiz, a noun meaning “a person expert in a particular activity,” from the verb whiz “to make or move with ahumming or rushing sound.” Just as plausibly, whizzo may be an alteration and shortening of the colloquial British usage of wizard “excellent,” used as an adjective and exclamation. Whizzo entered English in the early 20th century.

adverb or adjective || KAT-ee-kor-ner
This means… in a diagonal or oblique position : kitty-corner.

 Catercorner also has the variants kitty-corner and catty-corner, but despite appearances, no cats were involved in the creation of this word. Cater derives from the Middle French noun quatre (or catre), which means “four.” English speakers adopted the word to refer to the four-dotted side of a die—a side important in several winning combinations in dice games. Perhaps because the four spots on a die can suggest an X, cater eventually came to be used dialectically with the meaning “diagonal” or “diagonally.” This cater was combined with corner to form catercorner.
