Gettys and Gherkins

Our Mystery Monday trivia question asked this: “Atkins, Arkansas is famous for selling the first what?”

The answer is a fried dill pickle.  The History Channel says the first deep-fried pickle was sold at an Atkins Pickle Company festival in 1963.  They’re pretty much a staple now at fairs, festivals and as an appetizer at many restaurants.

The prize today was the CD ‘In Christ Alone’ from Keith and Kristyn Getty, the amazing worship leaders from Northern Ireland.  Congratulations to Tomi from Mount Vernon for winning the prize.  Find out more about the Gettys here.

Our word of the day was related to the question – GHERKIN. It means a small variety of cucumber. Those baby sweet pickles…yep, those are gherkins!

Starting 2016 strong!

Welcome to 2016!

Today’s show was a mixed bag of trivia, stories and inspired songs. One of those choruses was Darlene Zschech’s “Made Me Glad,” which offers this statement of victory for all who know Jesus:

You are my SHIELD, my STRENGTH, my PORTION, my DELIVERER…my SHELTER, STRONG TOWER, my very present HELP in time of need!

I hope that as you begin the new year, you can rest firmly in that promise.

Our trivia question for Mystery Monday was: What county in what state is known as the ‘winter lettuce’ capital of the world?  It produces 90% of the lettuce sold in the US from November-March.

Our word of the day was SALUBRIOUS – an adjective meaning favorable to or promoting health.

Mystery Monday – 12/14

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

We took a break from the Mystery Box today since we’re in the middle of the WNZR Christmas Gift Exchange. Congratulations to Barb and Larry, our two winners for today’s show!

Our Christmas Word of the Day was poinsettia, a plant with large, red, pink, or white petals that look like leaves. You can read more on that over here.

Mystery Monday – 12/7

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

Since it is Food For The Hungry week, I had a mystery question about Food for the Hungry. I asked how much money and how many truckloads of food were collected in the first ever FFTH drive in 1982. We didn’t receive a winner for this question, but $1,600 and 7 truckloads of food were raised at the 1982 drive.

Mystery Monday

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive.

I hid something in the Mystery Box, and after the hearing, smell, and taste tests, Stephen from Mt. Vernon called in and correctly guessed the item in the box was Chick-fil-a Sauce.

We told you all about the Fredericktown Christmas Walk, which is happening this Saturday from 4 pm – 8 pm in downtown Fredericktown.

Our Word of the Day was advent, a noun meaning both the coming of Christ, or the arrival of a notable person, event, or thing. You can read more on that here.

Mystery Monday – 11/23

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

I started off the show with a Mystery Question about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I asked what character has had more balloons than any other character in the history of the parade, and Rhonda from Mount Vernon called in and correctly answered Snoopy. And speaking of parades, make sure you head out to the Mount Vernon Christmas Walk & Parade this Sunday from 1 pm – 5 pm in downtown Mount Vernon. The parade will start at 2:30 pm.

Mystery Monday – 11/16

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

Joe hid something in the Mystery Box, and we received several guesses, but Valerie was the lucky winner who guessed that the box contained a pouch of brownie brittle.

Mystery Monday – 11/9

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

It was also the kickoff for the 2015 Totally Tasty Tom Turkey Hunt! You can read all about that here. Congratulations to Sam and Bernelle who got registered today on the show!

Since it was the first day for the Turkey Hunt, I was in a Thanksgiving mood and decided to have a holiday-related Mystery Monday question. I found this poll, that showed some of the favorite and least favorite Thanksgiving side dishes. I asked for you to name 2 of the 3 least liked items, and Teresa from Fredericktown called in and correctly guessed cranberries and sweet potatoes. The other item in the top 3 was vegetables.

Mystery Monday – 11/2

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive, and we had the return of the Mystery Box!

Jessica from Mount Vernon called in right after we kicked off the first Mystery Box test, and correctly guessed there was a bag of cereal hidden in the box.
