Who am I?

The Great Burger Controversy, Briskets & Who Am I Trivia

For this Who Knew Wednesday, we celebrated BOTH National Burger Day and National Brisket Day! It’s a perfect time to fire up the grill, which is easily the best way to celebrate these May 28th Holidays! We also talked about the controversial origin of the hamburger, and whether Otto Krause or Louis Lassen were the first inventors of the beloved sandwich. Here are the two theories:

The first theory is that the name comes from Hamburg, Germany and is said to be named by Otto Krause in 1881. Supposedly, Otto was a cook who decided to fry Hamburg steak in butter, topped with an egg, and placed on a bun. The burger was then popularized in the United States after sailors brought over the idea, scrapping the egg. However, the most believed and widespread theory is that it was created by Louis Lassen, a Danish Immigrant to the United States back in 1900. One day while working at his restaurant, New Haven eatery, a businessman in a rush requested something that could be made fast, and eaten on the go. Louis then put some grilled ground steak between slices of toast, and thus the hamburger was created.

What do you think? Team Otto or Team Louis? Let us know!

National Brisket Day not only celebrates one cut of meat, but all of them! It’s all about getting creative as you cook them. The most popular recipe for brisket is Texas BBQ, but we encourage you to come up with your own unique recipe!

We also played “Who Am I?” Trivia! We gave five facts about a person born on this day in history. The facts included:
1. This person is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who is referred to as the “Empress of Soul”
2. This person gained fame as the lead vocalist of a soul and R&B group in the 1950s, which was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
3. This person starred in the sitcom Charlie & Co. in the mid-1980’s.
4. This person competed in the 14th season of Dancing with the Stars at 68 years old, making it to the top eight.
5. Lastly, this person is behind “License to Kill”, the title theme song to the 1989 James Bond film of the same name.

The person we described is… Gladys Knight! Congratulations to Charla of Utica for guessing Gladys Knight and winning a $5 gift card to Watts Restaurant in Utica!

Biscuits, doggies and chicken dances?

Yes – the most random headline you could have addresses all of these celebrations today – May 14th!

National Buttermilk Biscuit Day
We’re not really sure why today was decided to recognize these delicious golden cakes of bread. What we do know is you can celebrate simply by eating one! There are so many different ways to enjoy one– You can slap on some butter and jelly for breakfast, or throw in some chicken and have yourself a dinner feast!

International Chihuahua Appreciation Day
On this day, we celebrate these little energetic pups! This international day was established five years ago, by former Miss British Columbia, Nadia Alterio. She was the proud of a little chihuahua, named Teaka! Our favorite way of celebrating this day was to get on the couch with your furry friend, and watch movies featuring chihuahuas, like “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”.

National ‘Dance Like a Chicken’ Day
The origins of this song date back to the 1950s! A Swiss accordionist named Werner Thomas, and this goofy, fun melody was heard a lot amongst social gatherings. The original inspiration for the name of this song was when Thomas was watching skiers with their arms tucked in, kind of how a bird carries its wings. While we don’t know why today is National Dance Like A Chicken Day, we’re gonna celebrate it because we love to dance like a chicken!

  1. I was born on May 14, 1944, in Modesto, California.
  2. I studied cinematography at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.
  3. I am known for films like American Graffiti, but my biggest film released in 1977 and was about a group of rebels fighting against the Galactic Empire.
  4. My production company is responsible for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the pioneering visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).
  5. I sold the production company that carries my name to The Walt Disney Company for over $4 billion in 2012.

I am… George Lucas! Congratulations to Kari from Newark who guessed correctly and wins the $5 gift card to Watts Restaurant in Utica.

Just call it…sweet tooth day!

What is going on with today? It’s the birthday of the Oreo Cookie, National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day (who decided to get that specific?) and National Chocolate Chip Cookie WEEK. Just writing it makes my blood sugar spike 🙂 and since it’s also National Dentist’s Day, I’m TOTALLY confused!

from DaysOfTheYear.com, here are some fun facts about today:

Making its first appearance in 1912, the Oreo Cookie actually started out being called the Oreo Biscuit. Created and manufactured by the Nabisco (National Biscuit Company), the cookie was made from two crisp chocolate rounds filled with white cream. Starting out in Chelsea, New York City, the complex was located on Ninth Avenue, a street which eventually became “Oreo Way”.

Since that time, the Oreo has been the best-selling cookie in the United States for many years. People love to eat the Oreo in a variety of ways, whether dunking it into a cool glass of milk, twisting it and licking the cream out of the center or just taking a crunchy bite.

Today is ALSO, Hospitality Workers in HealthCare Day, which gives us the opportunity to pay our respects to the hospitality workers in the healthcare sector. These dedicated workers put in a lot of time and effort day-in and day-out. They have a lot of different critical roles, including providing laundry services in an efficient and timely manner, maintaining hygienic, fresh, and clean environments, meeting a range of cultural needs, dietary requirements, and preferences, and much more.

Cereals, Fridges and a famous Santa

Who Knew?

  • Are you excited about Raisin Bran Day? In 1925, Skinner’s Manufacturing Company based out of Omaha, Nebraska, introduced the United States to Skinner’s Raisin Bran, the first bran cereal to add raisins into the mix. For several years, Skinner’s held the exclusive right to the name “raisin bran” but that didn’t stop the copycats. Skinner’s took their trademark to court. Despite being the first to trademark the name, Skinner’s lost on the grounds that the words “raisin bran” are merely ingredients. Enjoy a bowl of Raisin bran today to celebrate this special day!
  • It is rumored that National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day was started by the Whirlpool Corporation, an American company that has been making refrigerators since 1955. The actual day, however, only got its start in 1999. The reason for the timing of the event? Mid-November seems to be a good time to do this task just prior to celebrating the winter holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • I was born November 15, 1929 in Kansas City
  • I served in the US Army Signal Corps for two years
  • I studied journalism and drama in college before dropping out
  • I made my TV acting debut in 1957
  • I won seven Emmy Awards, five for the same character, Lou Grant
  • I played Santa Claus in Elf
  • I was the voice of Carl in the Pixar film, Up
  • I died in 2021 at 91 years of age

Coats For Kids Drive and Everybody Loves Raymond!

Hi!

Today on the show I talked about how the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon is hosting a Coats For Kids Drive throughout the month of October. I also talked about how Alaska became a part of the United States today. Someone also had another chance to win a $5 gift card to Watts Restaurant with our Who am I? trivia question.

WNZR’s Alyssa Sidle talked with Lisa Lloyd, Program Director for the Knox County Foundation and Kiwanis Member about the club’s annual Coats for Kids Collection. You can access the full conversation below.

The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon is excited to partner again with Gault’s Plaza Cleaners for the drive. During the month of October, gently used coats will be collected at various locations throughout Knox County. The coats will be cleaned by Gault’s Plaza Cleaners then taken to Interchurch Social Services and the Salvation Army to be distributed to children in need before winter arrives. There are 29 different partner locations in Knox County accepting donations through the 31st.

Interchurch and the Salvation Army are predicting that the need this year will be even greater than previous years. Salvation Army’s Captain Christine Moretz said “We have seen an increase to our food pantry and hot meal needs.  It would not be surprising to see the increased need for coats as well this coming winter season.”

Carolyn Fergus, Executive Director of Interchurch Social Services agreed, adding “Our numbers have doubled since the beginning of this year. There are so many families needing help making ends meet. A warm coat at no cost will go a long way to meet their needs.”

Kiwanis is dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.

Since 1987 there have been 19,226 coats donated, cleaned, and distributed through Coats for Kids.

Preventing House Fires and Ketchup!

Hi!

Today on the show I talked about how this week is House Fire Prevention Week. I also had our weekly Who am I? trivia question where another person had a chance to win a $5 gift card to Watts Restaurant.

Did you know that cooking fires are by far the leading cause of house fires at 49%? I had no idea!

Here is some more information on how you can prevent house fires:

The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ for more than 100 years — has announced “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2023. This year’s focus on cooking safety comes in response to NFPA’s latest cooking fire data, which shows that cooking remains by far the leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half (49 percent) of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths.

While other leading causes of home fires, such as smoking, have continued to decline since 1980, home cooking fires have not.

“These numbers tell us that more public awareness is needed around when and where cooking fires happen, along with ways to prevent them,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme presents a powerful opportunity to better educate the public about simple but important steps they can take to reduce their risk to home cooking fires, keeping themselves and those around them safe.”

Additional statistics from NFPA’s latest Home Cooking Fires report include the following:

  • Between 2017 and 2021, an average of 158,400 home cooking fires occurred in U.S. homes each year, resulting in 470 civilian deaths, 4,150 civilian injuries, and $1.15 billion in direct property damage.
  • In 2021, the number of reported cooking fires dropped to the lowest level seen since 2005. However, reported home cooking fires hit consecutive new highs in 2012–2015. In 2016–2018, these fires fell below the 2014 and 2015 levels, but remained historically high.
  • Unattended cooking was by far the leading factor in cooking fires and cooking fire deaths.
  • More than two-thirds (66 percent) of home cooking fires began with the ignition of cooking materials, including food, fat, and grease.

Following are cooking safety messages that support this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.”:

  • Always keep a close eye on what you’re cooking. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully.
  • Clear the cooking area of combustible items, keeping anything that can burn – such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels – at least three feet away from cooking equipment.
  • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
  • Create a “kid and pet free zone” of at least three feet (one meter) around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

“Staying in the kitchen, using a timer, and avoiding distractions that take your focus away from what’s on the stove are among the key messages for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign,” said Carli.

Fire Prevention Week is celebrated throughout North American every October and is the oldest public health observance on record in the U.S. For 101 years, Fire Prevention Week has worked to educate people about the leading risks to home fires and ways they can better protect themselves and their loved ones. Local fire departments, schools, and community organizations play a key role in bringing Fire Prevention Week to life in their communities each year and spreading basic but critical fire safety messages.

To learn more about Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.,” visit www.fpw.org. Additional Fire Prevention Week resources for children, caregivers, and educators can be found at www.sparky.org and www.sparkyschoolhouse.org.

Cinnamon Rolls and a Local President!

Hi!

Today on the show I talked about how today is National Cinnamon Roll Day! I also did our weekly Who am I? trivia question where one lucky person has a chance to win a $5 gift card to Watts Restaurant.

Did you know that cinnamon can be dated back as far back as 2800 BC in Chinese writings? I had no idea either!

Here are some of the notes that I took on National Cinnamon Roll Day:

  • Did you know that Cinnamon can be dated as far back as 2800 BC in Chinese writings? Cinnamon is known as Cinnamomum verum.
  • Cinnamon comes from the bark of a tree.
  • Its botanical name is “amomon” which translates to a fragrant spice plant.
  • The spice was used for medicinal purposes for healing, such as sore throats or coughing.
  • The 16th century is when it is believed to have been used in traditional styles of baking.
  • Cinnamon Rolls are believed to have been founded in Europe after the arrival of cinnamon to the continent.
  • They didn’t become popular until the country Sweden made them in the early 20th century.
  • During WWI Swedish people weren’t able to afford the spices, so it wasn’t until after WWI that Sweden was able to afford luxury items like spices.
  • But it wasn’t until decades later after WWI that cinnamon rolls really started to catch on in Sweden. It became a part of their cultural identity.
  • Sweden during the wintertime is a very dark and cold country. So in response to this, cinnamon is enjoyed because of the warmth from it.
  • Many Swedish people have fond memories of coming home after school and enjoying freshly made cinnamon rolls made by their moms and grandmas. And I don’t know about you, but I have several fond memories of making cinnamon rolls in the oven and then eating them with the cream cheese icing melting on top of the rolls!
  • It wasn’t until 1999 that Cinnamon Roll Day became a thing. It was founded by Kaeth Gardestedt and the Home Baking Council in Sweden.
  • This day is also celebrated in Finland.
  • The reason this holiday was created by the Swedes was to build upon their national identity which is associated with this delicious treat.
  • Get this, anyone guess how many cinnamon rolls the average Swedish person consumes? Well, if you guessed 316 cinnamon rolls a year, you would be the winner! That is an incredible amount of Cinnamon Rolls consumed.

How to Celebrate Cinnamon Roll Day:

Enjoy a Cinnamon Roll

How do we do this? Well, one of the ways you can do this is by going to a local bakery. You could also go to the grocery store to get the supplies to make them.

Learn to Make Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon rolls are messy while making them, but they are totally worth it! The ingredients include flour, sugar, eggs, milk, yeast, vanilla extract, and butter. And, of course, the most important ingredient is cinnamon.

Share Cinnamon Rolls with Others

This is also a time when you can get to spend time with your friends while eating a delicious cinnamon roll!

Head to Sweden for Cinnamon Roll Day

This doesn’t have to be today, but you can visit them whenever and get a delicious cinnamon roll!

  • The Swedes call cinnamon rolls kanelbulle (KANEL – BULLE) which means “cinnamon buns”.
