Cinnamon Rolls and a Local President!

Hi!

Today on the show I talked about how today is National Cinnamon Roll Day! I also did our weekly Who am I? trivia question where one lucky person has a chance to win a $5 gift card to Watts Restaurant.

Did you know that cinnamon can be dated back as far back as 2800 BC in Chinese writings? I had no idea either!

Here are some of the notes that I took on National Cinnamon Roll Day:

  • Did you know that Cinnamon can be dated as far back as 2800 BC in Chinese writings? Cinnamon is known as Cinnamomum verum.
  • Cinnamon comes from the bark of a tree.
  • Its botanical name is “amomon” which translates to a fragrant spice plant.
  • The spice was used for medicinal purposes for healing, such as sore throats or coughing.
  • The 16th century is when it is believed to have been used in traditional styles of baking.
  • Cinnamon Rolls are believed to have been founded in Europe after the arrival of cinnamon to the continent.
  • They didn’t become popular until the country Sweden made them in the early 20th century.
  • During WWI Swedish people weren’t able to afford the spices, so it wasn’t until after WWI that Sweden was able to afford luxury items like spices.
  • But it wasn’t until decades later after WWI that cinnamon rolls really started to catch on in Sweden. It became a part of their cultural identity.
  • Sweden during the wintertime is a very dark and cold country. So in response to this, cinnamon is enjoyed because of the warmth from it.
  • Many Swedish people have fond memories of coming home after school and enjoying freshly made cinnamon rolls made by their moms and grandmas. And I don’t know about you, but I have several fond memories of making cinnamon rolls in the oven and then eating them with the cream cheese icing melting on top of the rolls!
  • It wasn’t until 1999 that Cinnamon Roll Day became a thing. It was founded by Kaeth Gardestedt and the Home Baking Council in Sweden.
  • This day is also celebrated in Finland.
  • The reason this holiday was created by the Swedes was to build upon their national identity which is associated with this delicious treat.
  • Get this, anyone guess how many cinnamon rolls the average Swedish person consumes? Well, if you guessed 316 cinnamon rolls a year, you would be the winner! That is an incredible amount of Cinnamon Rolls consumed.

How to Celebrate Cinnamon Roll Day:

Enjoy a Cinnamon Roll

How do we do this? Well, one of the ways you can do this is by going to a local bakery. You could also go to the grocery store to get the supplies to make them.

Learn to Make Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon rolls are messy while making them, but they are totally worth it! The ingredients include flour, sugar, eggs, milk, yeast, vanilla extract, and butter. And, of course, the most important ingredient is cinnamon.

Share Cinnamon Rolls with Others

This is also a time when you can get to spend time with your friends while eating a delicious cinnamon roll!

This doesn’t have to be today, but you can visit them whenever and get a delicious cinnamon roll!

  • The Swedes call cinnamon rolls kanelbulle (KANEL – BULLE) which means “cinnamon buns”.

  • I was born on Oct. 4th , 1822 in Delaware, OH

Pacific Ocean, Pepperoni Pizza and Mr. Sinclair

Hi!

Today on the show I talked about how the Pacific Ocean was named and how today is National Pepperoni Pizza Day.

Did you know the Pacific Ocean was named by a European explorer named Ferdinand Magellan? I didn’t know that. The reason he named it Pacific was because the ocean was so calm. Pacific comes from the Latin word for tranquil, Pacificus.

Pepperoni pizza didn’t become widespread across the United States until the 1950s! That is incredible to me. So when you think about it, Pepperoni pizza is fairly new to the United States.

  • I was born on September 20, 1878, in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • I came from a relatively wealthy family.
  • I was a prolific writer and author who wrote over 90 books.

  • I ran for Governor of California as a part of the Socialist Party in 1934.

Marshmallows, Beaches, and Nuclear Physics

What do all of these things have in common? Well nothing actually. Today on the show I talked about how today is National Toasted Marshmallow Day. Today is also National Beach Day. I shared some good memories about sitting around the campfire and roasting marshmallows and making smores. I also shared several upcoming events that the Big Blue Crew will be a part of. We are super excited to be on the road in downtown Mount Vernon for September First Friday! Make sure to stop by and enter for our fantastic prize basket!

Knox County Fair – Day 4!

Today’s Who Knew Wednesday included a lot about Knox County Fair results and prizes.

Zoe, Morgan and Marcy shared results while Jonathon hosted in Big Blue. Remember tomorrow morning is the Sale of Champions broadcast, starting at 9:30!

Today’s Who Knews…

  • This week celebrates the birthday of American icon Amelia Earhart, born July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Amelia was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • National Dog Photography Day, celebrated on July 26 every year, aims to encourage dog owners, pet enthusiasts, photography enthusiasts, and all dog lovers to post as many photos of their dogs, guilt-free. Did you know that the United States has the highest pet dog population in the world? Yes, the United States has the highest pet dog population among all the countries, with approximately 75.8 million pet dogs.

Today’s trivia winners: Linda from Gambier and Mary from Mount Vernon. They both answered this question correctly: The Ohio Poultry Association will offer several different flavors of this snack at this year’s State Fair. What is it?

The answer? Deviled eggs! Some of the flavors include cotton candy, lemon merengue and everything bagel.

Frankfurter facts and fair fun!

Since it’s National Hot Dog day, and we’re four days away from the Knox County Fair, why wouldn’t we go all in on this favorite fair food? The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council has us covered!

You can check out all kinds of fun facts and poll results about the famous frankfurter, including these questions:

  • is a hot dog a sandwich? 57% say NO.
  • should a hot dog be eaten by hand? 90% say YES.
  • is there a wrong time to eat a hot dog? 86% say NO.

Splashes, pies and jello!

Who Knew?

Mount Vernon is getting a splash pad at Riverside Park, hopefully as early as this fall.

  • Councilwoman Amber Keener announced plans Monday night at the City Council meeting. The splash pad will be pirate-themed and named in the memory of former Ariel executive, husband and father, Hunter Wright (Capt. Hunter’s Landing). Funding for the splash pad and the adjacent pavilion are coming from the Ariel Corporation and the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.
  • The pavilion will be able to host events like local meetings, outdoor music lessons, book talks, and parts of the library’s summer reading program. Rendering pictures here were provided by Councilwoman Keener!

Today is National Pecan Pie Day!

  • Pecan pie is a staple at Thanksgiving and Christmas tables around the country.
  • The first printed pecan pie recipe surfaced in an 1886 edition of “Harper’s Bazaar” magazine. Years later, various forms of the recipe were published in well-known cookbooks such as “Joy of Cooking.”
  • NationalToday.com reports that throughout the early 1900s, Karo corn syrup was invented and yet another claim to the discovery of pecan pie emerged. The wife of a company executive shared her recipe using Karo as the ingredient of choice instead of maple syrup, honey, or molasses. Whether her claim is true, Karo corn syrup helped raise the popularity of pecan pie when they published the recipe on the product can.

Today is also National Eat Your Jello Day…um…what??

  • Jell-O was trademarked in New York in 1897, but it’s a classic dessert we all know and love! The best part of it is that it comes in a variety of flavors and can be combined with many ingredients for a simple, delicious treat.

Corvettes, Ceviche and BINGO!

Today’s Who Knews:

  • On June 28, 1953, workers at a Chevrolet factory in Flint, Michigan, built the inaugural Corvette. Two days later, the first Corvette was proudly driven off the production line, marking the completion of one of the 300 produced that year.
  • Today also celebrates the seafood appetizer Ceviche, one of my personal favorites (and I enjoy making it). Ceviche (say-VEE-chay) is popular in the Caribbean regions and in Latin America. It is made from raw, white fish (cod, sea bass, even shrimp or tilapia), marinated overnight in lime and/or lemon juice, which actually cooks the raw fish. I like to mix the lime juice with cilantro, a little bit of salsa or pico de gallo, a pinch of salt and a pinch of garlic salt or garlic cloves.   • yesterday was the birthday of B-I-N-G-O! The game originated in 16th century Italy, gaining popularity in Europe before it evolved into the modern version. Edwin S. Lowe introduced Bingo in the US in the early 20th century.

Who Am I?

  • I was born June 28,1703, in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England
  • I was the 15th of 19 children, one of nine who survived infancy
  • I was rescued from a fire when I was five years old after becoming trapped
  • I was ordained a deacon after finishing my degrees at Christ Church, Oxford
