Matthew 5 and MLK

Today we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by sharing a devotional from Pastor Victoria Curtiss, written as a tribute to him.

Matthew 5:43–48

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (NRSV)

Jesus said that anyone can love those who love them in return. What distinguishes people of God is the way we treat those who oppose us—our enemies. Just as God shows love to everyone, so are we to show love to everyone. This inclusivity is the meaning of “be perfect” as God is perfect.

What a fitting scripture for the day we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The key to the life of Dr. King is found in his Christian faith. He responded to violence with nonviolence, to hate with love. Dr. King was always looking toward reconciliation after the battle, because his approach was grounded in the gospel. He wrote, “It was the Sermon on the Mount, not a doctrine of passive resistance, that inspired the Negroes of Montgomery to social action. It was Jesus of Nazareth that stirred [them] with the creative weapon of love.”

Martin Luther King recognized that the heart of the gospel proclaims that love can really change a situation of conflict and enmity: love reaching out toward the oppressor, love pushing negotiation, love offering forgiveness and newness. It wasn’t that he lacked an appreciation for the persistence and power of evil. It was rather his evangelist’s faith. He really believed that the intolerant and prejudiced sheriffs and politicians were sheep who had strayed from the fold, who had the potential to be converted. However powerful evil is, love is more powerful still. “Remember him,” said Coretta Scott King, “as a man who refused to lose faith in the ultimate redemption of [humanity].”

Prayer

Thank you, God, for the witness of Martin Luther King Jr. Guide me as Christ’s follower to love as you love—everyone without exception. I lift up my enemies to you and pray for their well-being. Amen.

Today’s question: How many GMA Dove Awards has Jeremy Camp won?

Who Knew Wednesday: You can use WHAT to stick a poster to the wall?

The Floss Fix: To hang lightweight artwork that’s not in a heavy frame, there’s no need to buy picture wire. Unwaxed dental floss will do the trick.

Picture This: Hanging a picture? Make it easy by first taping a thumbtack, pointy side out, to the back below the hanging bracket. Perfectly position your picture and they give it a bit of a push into the wall.

Upright Candles: Do your candles slide around and their holders like a kid wearing his dad’s pants? Wrap the bottom with tape to get the right fit.

Magazine Management: Are magazines messing up your home? Make some decorative and functional magazine holders by cutting cereal boxes at angles and covering them with wrapping paper. Cover some of them with lacquer or decoupage for a durable finish.

Your Poster Child: If your teenager loves talking posters upon his or her bedroom wall, here’s a great tip to keep the corners hole free. Place a binder clip on each Corner then slip them over nails or thumbtacks. As an added bonus get shiny or colorful binder clips.

A Great Uses for Old Jewelry: Do you have too many brooches, pin, earrings and necklaces that you never get around to wearing? Repurpose them by turning them into unique magnets that get noticed! Just use wire cutters to cut off the back of earrings and pins and then take pendants off of a necklace and glue a magnet to them on the back.

Question: When slipping curtains over a metal rod, first place a ________ over the metal end. This will help you avoid snagging the curtain so they go on easily.

Answer: Plastic Bag

Huge shout out to Teresa from Mount Vernon who guessed the answer to this question, but then told us to give the tickets to the first Teenage who called in. Elli From Fredericktown called in right after that – Have fun at WinterJam 2020 Elli!

Question: A terrific way to hang posters and your kids room without leaving holes or stains is with ______________. Just put a generous drop on the back of each corner, press it to the wall, and watch it stick

Answer: Toothpaste! White, non -gel to be exact.

Congratulations to Kenna from Mount Vernon who guessed this right on the first try! You have fun at Winter Jam too, Kenna!!!

Praise Thursday: A Teachable Leader Will Never Stop Growing & A Leaders Strength Is On Their Knees

Todd and I started off the show today by reminding you that WinterJam is coming up!

Click HERE for more info on WinterJam 2020!

Here are today’s

A Teachable Leader Will Never Stop Growing

“Go from the presence of a foolish man, when you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge. The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, but the Folly of fools is deceit. Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is favor.”  – Proverbs 14: 7-9

How long did it take you to realize you do not know everything? When you come to the realization that there is still much for you to learn, you open the door to becoming a lifelong learner. In your Christian Life, God reveals himself when you surrender to his word and the leading of his Spirit. Romans 12:2 encourages you to ” not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”  God does not simply want you to try harder or sin less, but also to depend on his spirit and allow yourself to be transformed into someone who loves to through willing obedience. That transformation begins when you choose to become a lifelong learner of God’s word.

A Leader’s Strength is on Their Knees

“Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know. ” Jeremiah 33:3

Prayer is a very real part of your relationship with God. It is not just for the special, the religious Elite; it is for you. Throughout the Bible, God promises to speak to you when you humble yourself and listen for His voice. To listen actively, you must come before the Lord expectantly. You must eagerly anticipate him speaking to you. Get into the habit of beginning each day with God in prayer; let His Spirit open your heart and mind to his perfect will. He promises to ” show you Great and Mighty things, but you do not know.”

RESOLUTIONS…
We talked a little bit about New Year’s resolutions today on the show, and Eddie talked about his resolution. He said that his goal this year is to have ‘delayed gratification’ and by that he meant that he would get things done that aren’t incredibly exciting with a good attitude that will lead to happiness later. This was quite the profound resolution! Hopefully, everyone here at WNZR sticks to their resolutions this year! To hear about Professor Rinehart and my resolutions, check out the blog from the show yesterday here.

Live life for another
Take time for a brother.”
Congratulations to our winner, Faith from Mt. Vernon!

Our Name that Tune for today was a stumper!!! It will return next week!

WORD OF THE DAY…
Our word of the day today was ‘ennui’ which is an old French word  thar made its’ way onto the scene around 1660-1670.
Ennui is a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest; boredom.
And to use this word in a sentence: “The endless lecture produced an unbearable ennui.”

Have a great evening!
-Lilly & Eddie
