Who Knew These Things Could Save People?!

Today was Who Knew Wednesday on the show, and we shared lots of stories of people who had their lives saved by things you wouldn’t necessarily expect to save someone.

World Baking Day – your favorites!

Today celebrates the power of the oven! World Baking Day encourages baking as a way to say thanks to friends or loved ones, or to just avoid eating out for one night…Eddie and I asked you for your favorite baked desserts, and here’s some of what you told us:

  • Peach Cobbler
  • M&M Cookie Bars
  • Caramel-filled brownies
  • Ho-Ho cake
  • Strawberry Angel Food Cake
  • Mint Chocolate Chip Brownie Pie

and for favorite baked main courses:

  • Lasagna
  • Scalloped potatoes
  • Chicken Enchiladas
  • Pizza Spaghetti
  • Chicago Deep Dish Pizza
  • Diana Tocheff’s famous chicken bake (see recipe below)

I slow boil the boneless Chicken Breast in a mixture of white vinegar, water, garlic, pepper, and other spices for approx. 30 minutes. Remove the chicken. In a large mixing bowl, I mix 2 cans of Cream of Chicken soup, 16 oz sour cream, 2 cups of finely shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese, salt, pepper and grounded garlic to taste. Mix well. In a large baking dish, butter the bottom and sides with butter. Add enough of the soup mixture until bottom is covered. Place cooked Chicken Breast on top. Add rest of soup mixture covering the chicken. Top with Plain Panko Bread crumbs. Cover with foil and bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-45 minutes. Serve and Enjoy!!!! Makes great left overs or you can freeze it…

Unlocking the Mystery Box

Today Eddie took his first crack at hiding something in the Mystery Box and he did great – stumping me through the hearing and smell tests until I finally figured it out during the touch test.IMG_20160516_174624174_HDR

Operation Christmas Child

Today was Praise Thursday and we had our monthly focus on Operation Christmas Child.

You can find everything I talked about over here, including how to pack a box, volunteer information, and stories and videos of children who have received boxes.

I gave away 2 Operation Christmas Child baseball hats, and our winners were Douglas and Madison, both of Mount Vernon.

Who Knew About SCOUTFEST?!

Today was Who Knew Wednesday on the Afternoon Drive, and we told you all about SCOUTFEST.

SCOUTFEST is the largest scouting event in Knox County. The last SCOUTFEST was held in 2013 at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds, and this year it will be held at Ariel-Foundation Park May 13-15.

Some of the exciting activities planned for the Scouts include RC Boating, Sporting Arrows, Crafts, raspberry pi, robotics, bb Guns, Archery, fishing, cub-mobile races, blast car races, helicopter, Kokosing Heavy Equipment, primitive camping display, civil war encampment, mars rover, inflatable obstacle course, astronomy, the wilds, SPI, Shearers Equipment, rope making, ODNR, COSI, Deerassic Park, and much more!

The public is invited to come watch the action. The formal opening event will take place at 8:30 am on Saturday the 14th, near the Schnormeier Event Center. From 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM the activities and events are open.

Prepaid scouts will be wearing orange event t-shirts. Other youth who would like to participate may join Scouting at the event. The joining fee is $16.00 and any youth joining at the event will be allowed to participate at no additional charge. Interested youth should bring a parent to the Clock house when you arrive at the park to sign-up.

Our Troyer’s trivia question for the day was “How many boy scouts are there in the entire world?”. There’s a rough estimate of anywhere from 25-40 million scouts, but the World Scout Bureau says that estimate is closer to about 28 millions, but they are not entirely sure based on the census policies in some countries. Our winner was Christy from Mount Vernon, who picks up a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Our Word of the Day was palooka (puh-LOO-kuh), a noun that means an unskilled or incompetent boxer. You can read more on that here.

We also told you about the Jesus Freak Cruise, dc Talk’s 16 year reunion that will be taking place next summer. You can find all the information about that over here. Our word of the day is CUNCTATOR (cunk-TAY-ter), a noun for someone who delays or procrastinates.

Mystery Monday May showers…

April showers bring May flowers.  True, but what do May showers bring?  June joy?  We sure hope so, since this has been one rainy month so far!

Eddie and I asked these Mystery Monday questions: Who originated this saying? What was the name of the collection of writing that contained this poem?

The answer? Thomas Tusser, in his book A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry, written in 1557.  The website Quora explains the saying this way: “April showers bring May flowers is a reminder that even the most unpleasant of things, in this case the heavy rains of April, can bring about very enjoyable things indeed – in this case, an abundance of flowers in May. ‘April showers bring May flowers’ is a lesson in patience, and one that remains valid to this day.”

Who Knew About These Unique Holidays?!

Today was Who Knew Wednesday and we talked about weird and unique holidays you may not have known existed.

Jess on cakeToday is Star Wars Day (aka May the 4th), so we encouraged you to watch one of the Star Wars films tonight to celebrate. You can also head over here to check out the official Star Wars May the 4th Hub. To celebrate, I thought I’d add a throwback picture from Joe’s birthday where my face on Princess Leia’s body was put on Joe’s cake as part of a WNZR joke.

Tomorrow is Password Day, a holiday created to make sure all of your passwords are secure and up-to-date. You can click herehere for more information on the holiday, and head over here to find a ton of tips on how to make sure you have strong and unique passwords.

This Friday is No Homework Day, a holiday created to give kids a small break from their homework and a chance to relax a little bit as they are hitting the craziness of the end of the school year. Plus, since it’s on a Friday, your kids still have the rest of the weekend to do their assignments.

Next Monday, May 9th, is Lost Sock Memorial Day. This day was created just to mourn the loss of any socks you may have lost over the years, while still celebrating the random leftover socks you still have. You can read more on this holiday over here.

Our trivia question for the day had to do with Lost Sock Memorial Day. We asked how many socks the average person loses each year, and Dallas from Utica called in and correctly guessed that the answer was 15 socks. (The average person actually loses around 1,264 socks during their lifetime! You can read more on that study over here.) Dallas picked up a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Our Word of the Day was wisenheimer (WYE-zun-hye-mer), a noun meaning a smart aleck or wiseguy. You can read more on that here.

The Mystery Box Returns!

EddieMBoxToday Eddie returned to the show and we brought back the Mystery Box…I hid the item and we went through the hearing, touch and taste tests.

Today’s Word of the Day is PRINK, a verb which means to fuss about your clothes, usually in front of a mirror.  It can also describe the action of dressing up, like “I got all prinked up to go to the prom.”
