Going to war with the right weapon

Today we began a devotional series inspired by the film War Room, which focuses on prayer and features speaker and author Priscilla Shirer in the lead role.  Priscilla and her brother, singer Anthony Evans, will be part of a nationwide simulcast event on Saturday, April 23rd, and Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene will be the local host church.

Today we shared 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 as the opening verse that helps us understand how prayer is our greatest ‘weapon’:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

This is what Alex Kendrick writes in the War Room devotional, Overflow:
“Before you engage in an issue, a battle, or whatever your problems are, spend time in prayer first. Go to your war room—your prayer closet—and seek the Lord. When you commit to prayer and you seek God first, you are going before the One that knows the solution and can help you through any circumstance. So how do we fight? We fight in prayer, first seeking in our war room the One who can handle anything. Trust Him, keep your faith in Him, and go to war in prayer.”

We also played the song Victor’s Crown  which reminds that ‘every high thing must come down and every stronghold shall be broken.’ Christ will have the ultimate victory!

Our word of the day is miche (mitch), which means to lurk out of sight, which is like hiding and creeping around. We don’t recommend this!

Who Knew It Was Scrabble Day?!

Today is Scrabble Day, a day created to celebrate Scrabble, and since it’s Who Knew Wednesday, we told you a ton of fun fact about Scrabble.

Did you know Scrabble is an actual word? It means to scratch vigorously.

In 1938, American Alfred Mosher Butts created the game as a variation on an earlier word game he invented called Lexiko. He called the game “Criss-Crosswords,” added the 15×15 gameboard and the crossword-style game play. 

n 1948, James Brunot, a resident of Connecticut – and one of the few owners of the original Criss-Crosswords game – bought the rights to manufacture the game in exchange for granting Butts a royalty on every unit sold. Mr. Brunot simplified the rules and also changed the name of the game to “Scrabble”, a real word which means “to scratch frantically”. Scrabble‘s big break came in 1952 when Jack Straus, president of Macy’s, played the game on vacation. Upon returning from vacation, he was surprised to find that his store did not carry the game. He placed a large order and within a year, Scrabble was a household name.

Andrew from Mt. Vernon was our winner of a $5 gift certificate to Pier House coffee shop of Troyer’s of Apple Valley, for correctly answering our trivia question: What was inventor Butts’ day job? Answer: He was an architect.

We also told you about how Bingo and Scrabble are connected. When a player uses all 7 of their Scrabble tiles in a single play, it’s called Bingo. Plus, when you get a Bingo, 50 additional points are added to the score of your word!

Our Word of the Day was oxyphenbutazone, which is the highest scoring word possible in a game of Scrabble. Oxyphenbutazone is an anti-inflammatory, and will score you a nice 1,778 points. You can read some of the other highest-scoring words over here.

Game Time Tuesday – 4/12/16

Today was Game Time Tuesday on the Afternoon Drive.

We played Song Poetry using the lyrics Your love is / Like radiant diamonds / Bursting inside us. Kathy from Howard called in and correctly guessed that those lyrics belong to NEEDTOBREATHE’s song Brother.

Julie from Fredericktown was our winner for Name That Tune, guessing that our clip was from Trust In You by Lauren Daigle.

Our Word of the Day was hobnob, a verb meaning to associate familiarly. You can read more on that here.

We also gave you an update on our Lifeline 2016 total, which is currently at $66,319! Thank you so much for all of our support during Lifeline and all throughout the year.

Mystery Monday, Tico Style!

Today we had the chance to visit with our own Samantha Goodman and hear about her experience in Costa Rica.  Sam and 18 other MVNU students spent nearly three months in San Jose, studying at language school and exploring one of the most beautiful countries in the world!

What’s unique about Sam’s experience is that she spent 5 days in the hospital with two herniated discs after a whitewater rafting trip.  Thankfully, she recovered and was able to finish her courses.  Sam actually attended the SAME language school that my parents attended when they were on the mission field. We lived in the same neighborhood!

Today’s two-part Tico trivia question was (Costa Ricans call themselves Ticos): What is the second-largest city in Costa Rica? What does the city’s name mean in English?

Answer: Puerto Limon, which means Lemon Port. Congratulations to Janice of Mount Vernon who wins a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley and Pier House Coffee.

Our Word of the Day is: Guanacaste (guan-a-COSS-tay), which is a province in Costa Rica named for the Guanacaste tree, which means ‘ear tree’ in an Aztec dialect. The fruits of this tree look like ears and are favored by parrots and field mice. Here’s a picture:

Praise Thursday – Lifeline Recap

Today was Praise Thursday on the Afternoon Drive and we are definitely praising God for our Lifeline 2016 total!

Our goal was $62,000 and we are currently at $63,404! And we had even more pledges come in the mail today that we will add to the total tomorrow! We cannot say thanks enough for your continued support of our ministry. Without you, our station would not exist, so thank you so much for partnering with us.

Congratulations to Olivia of Mount Vernon, who was our cue-to-call winner of a $5 gift certificate to Pier House Coffee Shop, located inside Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Who Knew These DIY Tips & Tricks?

Today was Who Knew Wednesday on the Afternoon Drive, and since April is Decorating Month, we decided to spend the show talking about DIY tips and tricks!

Our Word of the Day was mithridate, a noun meaning an antidote against poison. You can read more on that here.

Today’s trivia question was:

Taupe is a color many people decorate with. It is a mix between brown and gray.  But what is the original meaning of the French noun, ‘taupe?’
answer: a MOLE

Game Time Tuesday & Lifeline 2016 Update

Today was a VERY exciting day on the Afternoon Drive! During the second half of the show, we received a pledge from Big Mike & Upward Soccer that put us over our Lifeline 2016 goal! We are now sitting $62,049! Thank you so much to everyone who has given during Lifeline, we are extremely grateful for all of your love and support of WNZR!

Today was also Game Time Tuesday. We played song poetry using these lyrics: Breathing air we have never breathed / We’ll see colors we’ve never seen / Every sound like a symphony. Alexa from Howard correctly guessed that those lyrics belong to Live On Forever by The Afters.

Our Word of the Day was mash, and no, we aren’t talking about potatoes. The noun definition of mash is an intense and usually passing infatuation, or a crush. If you don’t believe us, you can read more on that here.

Lifeline Choice Challenge Day!

Today on the Afternoon Drive, we strayed from our normal Praise Thursday and brought you the Lifeline Choice Challenge during an extended show.

We talked about our theme of Build Your Kingdom Here and how that relates to our mission statement: “WNZR Radio exists to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, provide listeners with excellence in programming, build trusted relationships in the community, and advance the mission of Mount Vernon Nazarene University- shaping lives through educating the whole person and cultivating Christ-likeness for lifelong learning and service.”

John 15:8 talks about how we can glorify God by bearing fruit, and one way that we do that is by allowing Him to dwell in our hearts and build His kingdom there. As a ministry, we want the kingdom of God to be in our hearts so that we can show His kingdom to others.

Another way we can glorify God with our station is by providing our listeners with excellence in programming, which is the next part of our mission statement. We want to be able to provide with quality and family-friendly programming that encourages you toward a deeper relationship with Christ where YOU allow Him to build His kingdom in your heart.

Lastly, we want to build trusted relationships with people in the community so that we can show the love of Christ to others and build God’s kingdom in Knox County.

Our Word of the Day was parry, a verb meaning to ward off a weapon or blow, or to evade. You can read more on that here.
