Wait your turn in the…queue?

Today’s Mystery Monday question was: What is the only word in the English language that is pronounced the same when the last four letters are removed?

The answer…and our Word of the Day…QUEUE (like Q), which means (as a noun) a line or sequence of people or vehicles awaiting their turn to be attended to or to proceed. It can also be a verb, meaning to take one’s place in a queue. This is a very common word in both Britain…and in computing!

Congratulations to Lisa from Danville, who answered our question and wins a $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Thy Kingdom Come!

lifeline banner-01Today we continued our devotionals on ‘Build Your Kingdom Here’ and focused on the Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6 and Luke 11.

Jesus gives us a model for prayer that includes the phrase, “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done.” This means that as followers of Jesus, taking on the heart of Christ like we discussed last week, we should pray that God’s Kingdom will come in both us and on the earth.

This reminds us of our theme and the image of the Kingdom being built in our hearts. We should live in a way that the Kingdom of God will be seen in our words and in our actions. We are also living in anticipation of Jesus’ return and His promise to return again (Matthew 24:30-44).

So, we can think about the Kingdom this way: personified in Jesus as he walked this earth; transferred to us through allowing the Holy Spirit to take reign in our hearts; and finally, returning when Jesus returns.

Today we also gave away two more tickets to see Lecrae at the 2016 Ohio State Fair! Congratulations to Spencer, who won those tickets!!

The word of the day is CONSUMMATE, an adjective meaning complete in every detail or perfect, or extremely skilled and accomplished.

Who Knew These Easter Fun Facts?!

Today was Who Knew Wednesday on the Afternoon Drive!

Since Easter is in just a few days, we decided to share some fun facts about the holiday and how it’s celebrated.

It’s the start of a GREAT week!

Passion_FB_MWSIt’s the start of Holy Week here on WNZR…

Last night I had the chance to watch the FOX live musical, The Passion, produced and hosted by Tyler Perry, which included the talents of Michael W. Smith (above; photo credit, FOX) and many others like Trisha Yearwood, Chris Daughtry, Shane Harper and Jencarlos Canela.  It was a creative, unique presentation of the Gospel story. Honestly, to see 2 hours of live network TV proclaiming the name of Jesus was awesome! Stay tuned for details about a possible re-run or DVD release.

Today our Mystery Monday trivia question was: The Cadbury Crème Egg was introduced in its current form in what year and with what name?

The answer was 1963, as Fry’s Crème Eggs.  The name changed to Cadbury in 1971.

Fun fact: Cadbury is introducing an Oreo flavor of Creme Egg this year!

Today’s Word of the Day is SMITHEREENS – which means small pieces or bits of something.

The Kingdom Visible…then and now.

lifeline banner-01We continue our weekly devotional time on Praise Thursday with more about ‘Build Your Kingdom Here.’

The phrase itself sometimes leaves us with these questions: If we’re asking God to Build His Kingdom, how does it become visible?  How do we know it’s here? How was it visible when Jesus spoke to the Pharisees in Luke 17?  Wasn’t that what they were asking? How can we borrow from that passage now?

Biblical scholars have been studying the Gospels for centuries and there are two basic translations of the last part of verse 21: ‘The Kingdom of God is in your midst (or among you)’ and ‘The Kingdom of God is within you.’  The difference is that in biblical times, Jesus was basically saying that the Kingdom was standing in front of the scholars.  He was the representation of the Kingdom!

So what about this concept of the Kingdom starting in our hearts?  Well, if as Christians we are to imitate Christ (Ephesians 5:1) then the Kingdom must start in our hearts.  We must take on the HEART of Christ. The scriptures also remind us that the Kingdom of God should be on our minds.  Matthew 6: 9-13 is the Lord’s Prayer – it tells us we should pray for the Kingdom to come.  Matthew 6:33 says we should seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and his righteousness.  So, we should seek to let Christ-like characteristics reign in our heart, which then translates to our mind and hands, and finally becomes a habit.

Today’s word of the day is HIBERNIAN – which means quite simply, Irish.  Hibernia is the Latin name for Ireland.

Today’s ‘leftover’ trivia question from Wednesday’s show was: Vinegar is a liquid consisting of acetic acid, water and other trace chemicals, which may include flavorings. The acetic acid is produced by the fermentation of WHAT LIQUID?

The answer is ETHANOL!  Congratulations to Dan from Howard (who is a chemist) who correctly answered our question and wins a $5 gift card from Troyer’s of Apple Valley.

Who Knew How To Remove Stains?!

Today was Who Knew Wednesday on the Afternoon Drive, and we gave you a bunch of tips and trick on how to remove various household stains.

Here are some of the ones we shared:

Coffee Stains – Get rid of coffee stains with one of our favorite household helpers—vinegar. Blot the stain with a solution of one part vinegar and one part water, then let sit for 10 minutes. If it’s a tablecloth or piece of clothing, wash in the washing machine as usual.

Grass Stains – Sometimes our kids get so many grass stains on their clothes, we think we should just buy them all-green outfits. To get out grass stains, try rubbing the stain with molasses or corn syrup and let stand overnight, then wash the item with regular dish soap by itself.

Marker Stains – Yes, there’s even hope for permanent marker stains, and it comes in the form of something you already have in your bag: hand sanitizer. Squirt it around the edges of the stains and then work your way in, then let sit for five minutes before cleaning. Just make sure you test the material for color-fastness, as hand sanitizer can discolor it.

Blood Stains – To get out blood stains, soak the stained area in club soda before laundering. If the blood is fresh (ouch!), make a paste of water and talcum powder, cornstarch, cornmeal, or meat tenderizer and apply it to the stain. Let it dry, and then brush it off.

Table Rings – If you’ve got kids, you probably have watermarks on your finished wood table. Since they may never listen to you pleas to use a coaster, use a little petroleum jelly to remove the white stains. Just rub the area with the jelly and let sit for several hours, or overnight. Then rub again with a soft cloth and the stain should disappear.

Paint Spills – Mix together 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid, and 1 quart warm water. Douse the are with this mixture and try rubbing it way. If that doesn’t work, you may be out of luck. Wait for the paint to dry and snip off the area that has paint on it.

Travis from Mount Vernon called in and correctly guessed that those lyrics belong to For King & Country’s song Shoulders.

Gabriel from Gambier was our winner for Name That Tune. He correctly answered that the clip we played was from At The Cross by Chris Tomlin.

Our Word of the Day was wordmonger, a noun meaning a writer or speaker who uses words pretentiously or with careless disregard or meaning. You can read more on that here.

It’s the day for question marks?

Monday, March 14, 2016 marks two ‘not-so-official’ holidays:

International Pi Day (3.14)…a day to celebrate math and desserts!

International Ask a Question Day…perfect for Mystery Monday.

Today we shared the list of Google’s Top 10 trending questions from 2015.  They were a mix of technology (how to’s on Snapchat, iTunes, emoji and Windows 10 updates), games (how to solve a Rubik’s Cube and how to earn legendary marks in the game Destiny) and every year (how do I lose 10 pounds?) questions.

Our Mystery Monday question was: what was the #1 searched movie on Google in 2015? The answer was Jurassic World, followed by Furious 7 and American Sniper. Congratulations to Sandye of Mount Vernon for getting the question right!

Our Word of the Day was VERBATIM (ver-BAY-tim), an adverb meaning ‘word for word.’

Praise Thursday -Story Behind Build Your Kingdom Here

Today was Praise Thursday on the Afternoon Drive, and we talked all about our Lifeline 2016 theme of Build Your Kingdom Here. We focused on the meaning behind the song Build Your Kingdom Here by Rend Collective.

I shared some interviews that were done with Gareth, the lead singer of the band, about the story of the song. You can find those here and here.

I also shared these verses that Gareth said helped to inspire the song (click each for the verse) : Colossians 3:14-15, Matthew 6:33-34, and Matthew 10:7.

I also shared our Lifeline 2016 theme verse, Luke 17:20-21, which says:

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”
