Mystery Monday – Cereal, NYC, and Tenth Avenue North

cereal_cartoon_eyes1Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

I had a Mystery Question from an I article I read on a study from Cornell University on the psychology of cereal boxes. You can read the full article over here. I asked what one thing on a cereal box increases brand trust by 16%.

After receiving multiple guesses in the first few minutes, including box tops, a note that the cereal contained a certain vitamin, that it was made with whole grain or less sugar, cartoons being on the box, or there being a mascot, Sam from Shreve called in and correctly answered that eye contact from the cereal box’s mascot is what increases brand trust by 16%. I highly recommend checking out that study I linked above, because it has a lot of other interesting information.

I also told you about how our Big Blue Crew went on the road to Louisville, Kentucky for the Nazarene Youth Conference last week and this past weekend. I also told you about all the awesome videos they put together that you definitely want to check out. Here are the links:

I also told you about the Tenth Avenue North tour stopping in Ohio this fall. They will be at Mansfield Christian School on Friday, October 9th at 7:00 pm. You can get tickets for this concert over here.

Our Word of the Day was clerisy, a noun meaning a distinct class of learned or literary people. You can read more on that over here.

Praise Thursday – July 9th

Today was Praise Thursday on the Afternoon Drive.

I shared some great devotionals from an awesome ministry called Our Daily Bread. Click here to check out there website.

The first one I shared was titled “Feeling Insignificant?” and it was all about realizing that you have worth and importance in Christ. You can read the whole thing here. The verses that go along with it are 1 Timothy 6:17, Ephesians 2:10, and Psalm 139:7-16.

The other devotional I shared was “Start From Here!”, which talked about how you can start living for God today. Whatever has happened in your past or whatever choices you have made are insignificant in God’s eyes when you choose to follow him. You can check out the entire devotional over here. That devotional uses Acts 9:1-9 and Phillipians 3:13-14.

I talked about Operation Christmas Child and the awesome work they are doing. You can check out there website over here. I also shared the story of a 12 year-old orphan named Livia, whose life was changed when she received a shoe box from Operation Christmas Child. You can read the whole story here.

Our Word of the Day was nonage, a noun meaning a period of youth or a lack of maturity. You can read more on that here.

Have a great end to your week!

Who Knew It Was Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas?!

christmas picture for ad blogDon’t let the title of this post freak you out!

Since our Big Blue Crew is gearing up to go on the road this weekend to Christmas In July, the annual food drive to benefit Interchurch Social Services, I decided that I would do this week’s Who Knew Wednesday all about Christmas!

For information on Christmas in July, you can click here.

First, I shared some fun facts about Christmas trees, which you can find here and here.

I also shared some information on Christmas shopping. You can check out the infographic on that over here.

You can find the Top 10 American Christmas Traditions list that I shared by clicking here.

The fun facts I shared about Christmas cards is here.

And, my favorite list, the Top 50 Christmas Toys of the Last 100 Years, which shows the most popular Christmas toys by decade, is over here.

Our word of the day was nabob, a noun meaning a person of great wealth or importance. You can read more about that here.

Have an awesome Wednesday evening!

Game Time Tuesday – July 7th

It was Game Time Tuesday on today’s Afternoon Drive!

We played Buzzword and Song Poetry. Our Buzzword was “body” and Evelyn from Mount Vernon quickly called in and won a Ginny Owens CD.

We also played song poetry with these lyrics:

I won’t fear what tomorrow brings

With each morning I’ll rise and sing

My God’s love will lead me through

We didn’t have a Song Poetry winner, but those lyrics belong to Rend Collective’s My Lighthouse. You can check out that song here.

We talked about Chocolate Day and Global Forgiveness Day, which are both today. The best way to celebrate would be to combine the two and send a delicious chocolate treat to someone you need to forgive.

Our Word of the Day was nostrum, a noun meaning a questionable remedy or scheme. You can read more about that here.

We told you our Big Blue Crew will be going on the road THIS Saturday, July 11th for Christmas in July. Miriam Hayslett and Annabelle Harray will be traveling to different collection points throughout Mount Vernon from 10 am – 12 pm to give you live updates on what is happening. Click here to see what items are needed most and the complete list of collection sites.

Praise Thursday – July 2, 2015

PRAISE THURSDAY THEME: What does the Bible have to tell us when things don’t go our way?  We all know that disappointments, large or small, can lead to discouragement, which can then lead to downright anger.  So where we can we go when we feel that slide towards disappointment?

I think several passages rise up when we consider this question.  I am praising God today because His word guides me through these times.  James 1 reminds us that we can ‘consider it pure joy’ when we face trials. In 2015, that may seem oxymoronic or downright crazy!  But James wasn’t trying to be insensitive; instead, he’s urging us to rejoice because of what God will accomplish through our trials.  Earthly trials produce spiritual endurance and eventual spiritual maturity, or I would call perspective.

James also gets us started in the right direction – he says that if we lack wisdom, we should ASK GOD. We’ve got to remember to ask God first, then believe and not doubt when the direction is given.  After all, He’s got the bigger picture in mind.

Here are some other encouraging verses concerning disappointment:

Jeremiah 29:11
Romans 8:28
Philippians 4:6-7
Colossians 3:23-25

WORD OF THE DAY: ergonomic (adjective): intended to provide optimum comfort and to avoid stress or injury.

FIREWORKS UPDATE:  Don’t forget – there are TWO celebrations this year in Mount Vernon: Friday night 7/3 at dusk (10pm) over Memorial Park (WNZR Fireworks Viewing Party link here) and Saturday 7/4 at Ariel-Foundation Park with a laser light show at 9:30 and a fireworks finale at 10:00.

Thanks for listening and Happy 4th of July!

-Joe

Who Knew Wednesday – July 4th Weekend

Wfc_pyrotechnic_displayToday was Who Knew Wednesday and we gave you all the details on all the different festivities taking place around Knox County this 4th of July weekend.

On Friday, July 3rd, you can head over to Mount Vernon’s July First Friday. WNZR will be going On The Road Without Big Blue (see what I did there?) to First Friday on the public square of downtown Mount Vernon from 6 pm – 9 pm. For more information on what we will be giving away and all of the other First Friday events, you can head over here.

The reason we will be On The Road Without Big Blue at First Friday is because we will be On The Road WITH Big Blue that same night at our WNZR Fireworks Viewing Party. The party starts at 8 pm and then at 9 pm, your family has the chance to compete in our annual Liberty Games, where you can win The Roar and Explore Prize Package from Experience Columbus, valued at over $500! The prize package includes tickets to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Cosi, and more. And even if you don’t win, you’ll still have the BEST view of the fireworks in all of Mount Vernon at 10 pm. You can click here to find out more information about the party, or click here to invite your friends!

Then, after you fit in all that patriotic fun on Friday night, make sure to get a good night’s sleep so you and your family can enjoy even more festivities on Saturday! The Ariel Foundation Park Grand Opening Celebration will we taking place from 1 pm – 10 pm, and there will be tons of activities all over the park throughout the entire day, including a lazer light show and fireworks finale to close the celebration.
