The Dog Star?

August First Friday is just around the corner and we are excited to be hosting the main event for this month – the “Dog Days of Summer” Dog Parade! First Friday will run from 6-9pm, but registration for the dog parade is on-site only in Downtown Mount Vernon from 6:30-7:15.

We have all heard the phrase “Dog Days of Summer”, but what does that actually MEAN?

Sure, this time of year is typically the hottest it gets, but that is not the origin of the phrase. This saying is actually derived from astrology and this time of year celebrates when Sirius – known as the “Dog Star” rises to its most noticeable point. So next time you are out stargazing, keep an eye out for the Sirius star because it’ll only be prominent until roughly August 11th.

You can read Scott Smith’s article that we referred to during the show here!

Who Am I?

  • I was born on this date in 1901 in New Orleans
  • I moved to Chicago to start my music career as a trumpet player in the late 20s
  • I eventually became one of the pioneers of scat singing and formed a big band named after myself in the 40s
  • Some of my biggest hits include “What a Wonderful World” and “Mack the Knife”
  • I died of a heart attack in 1971 at the age of 69

I am… Louis Armstrong!

Congratulations to Kathy of Mount Vernon for correctly guessing our trivia and winning a $5 gift card to Everlasting Cup!

Thanks for listening!

Its Thursday, YAY!

Today on Praise Thursday we shared some amazing devotions from Our Daily Bread. The first one we shared was called “God’s Restoring Ways”. When we’ve hurt others or taken for granted God’s goodness in our life, it’s easy to assume we’ve forever marred the good gifts we’ve been given. But when we humbly turn to Him, we find His love is always reaching to embrace and restore. To read more click HERE. Our second devotional was called “The Baggage Activity”. Sometimes the burdens we carry make us feel like foreigners—alone and misunderstood—even among our peers. Read more HERE.

Q: What did Joseph do for the Pharaoh while he was in prison?

I’ve heard ’em say before to live just like you’re dying, yeah

Wish I could say that’s how I am but I’d be lying, yeah

And lying in my bed at night one too many times just thinking
