Prayers of confession and humility

Today, we continue sharing devotionals from the book Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr. James Banks, who serves as a pastor at Peace Church in Durham, North Carolina and is a regular writer for Our Daily Bread.

In this short book, we are reminded that the prayers of the Bible are an amazing gift from God and they have so much to teach us.

This is what Alex and Stephen Kendrick talk about in their book The Battle Plan for Prayer in the chapter called ‘Praying the Word.’ In the prayers of scripture, we find words that can help carry our thoughts and emotions to God. He invites us closer to him through the prayers of the Bible.

This week, we continue to share prayers from the Word to confess sin and to humble ourselves.

Dr. Banks writes that of all of Jesus’ names and titles, the one that he likes best is the one that the Pharisees gave him: Friend of Sinners. It may have been one of Jesus’ favorites too, because in Luke 19:10 he said he “came to seek and save those who are lost.” Friend of Sinners best captures the reason He came. Why is that? Because a true friend will love you even when you don’t deserve it and will look for you when you’ve lost your way. Jesus does all of that and more. John 15:13 reminds us that there is “no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

All of us like friendship, but we need to remember that friendship is a two-way street. So as we think of Jesus as our friend, we need to ask ourselves – what kind of friend am I to Jesus? If I’m someone’s friend I’m going to care about our relationship. I’ll be mindful of things that could be hurtful or cause distance between us. Nothing causes Jesus more pain than sin. Remembering how much my sins cost Jesus helps me be a better friend to him. So the Bible’s prayers of confession and humbling ourselves before God also remind us to be a better friend.

Today we’re addressing what we do when we are faced with overwhelming guilt.  One verse that we can pray is Psalm 38…

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.
Your arrows have pierced me,
    and your hand has come down on me.
Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
    there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
My guilt has overwhelmed me
    like a burden too heavy to bear.

My wounds fester and are loathsome
    because of my sinful folly.
I am bowed down and brought very low;
    all day long I go about mourning.
My back is filled with searing pain;
    there is no health in my body.
I am feeble and utterly crushed;
    I groan in anguish of heart.

18 I confess my iniquity;
    I am troubled by my sin.

Then follow with Psalm 119, verses 169-176:

169 May my cry come before you, Lord;
    give me understanding according to your word.
170 May my supplication come before you;
    deliver me according to your promise.
171 May my lips overflow with praise,
    for you teach me your decrees.
172 May my tongue sing of your word,
    for all your commands are righteous.
173 May your hand be ready to help me,
    for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, Lord,
    and your law gives me delight.
175 Let me live that I may praise you,
    and may your laws sustain me.
176 I have strayed like a lost sheep.
    Seek your servant,
    for I have not forgotten your commands.

Thanks for listening!

Artist Newsday Game-Time Tuesday!

Welcome in to another jam packed Afternoon Drive!
Today, we gave you two more chances to win playing “Song Poetry” and “Name that Tune.” We also added a brand new feature to our show, “Artist NewsDay Tuesday”!

ARTIST NEWSDAY TUESDAY – TAUREN WELLS

It’s already been a busy 2018 for Provident Label Group/Sony Music Entertainment artist Tauren Wells. He kicked off the year with two GRAMMY nominations (adding to his previous two other nominations), he currently has multiple songs on the top of the radio charts, he’s been speaking and leading worship at his home church as well as at Lakewood Church in Houston, and to top of it off Tauren welcomed his third son, Navy Elliott, into their growing family!

The Gospel Music Association (GMA) recently announced the nominees for the 49th Annual GMA Dove Awards, revealed exclusively on Facebook Live with the help of Travis Greene and Francesca Battistelli.

So far Tauren Wells leads artist nominations with seven, followed by Zach Williams with six and Cory Asbury, Tasha Cobbs Leonard and TobyMac with five nods each.

ARTIST NEWSDAY TUESDAY: LAUREN DAIGLE

We also have so many of our favorite artists coming out with new music this next month.
On Friday, September 7th, look for a new album from my favorite artist, Lauren Daigle –
Look up Child – a 14 song album which includes the song “You Say” that we have released here on WNZR, a piano version of that song, and the song entitled “Look Up Child”, which is the name of her upcoming tour starting on September 11th. You can learn more about her tour and purchase tickets here!
(And yes, she’s coming to Ohio TWICE on the tour!)

For Song Poetry today, we did an artist that is also up to some pretty exciting things!
Our lyrics were as follows…

“Oh, the God who made the stars
Is the God that made your heart
And He’s holding you right now.”

It’s Plumb and her song “Beautifully Broken”!

Congratulations to Tysha from Mt. Vernon! She guessed correctly!

We chose this one because she released the music video for this song last Friday, and being the huge fan of Alice in Wonderland that I am, I really enjoyed this video.
Check it out here!
If “Beautifully Broken” sounds familiar, it should.
It’s not just a song, it’s also the name of a movie featuring some of our favorite artists including Michael W Smith and TobyMac!
Three families. Two worlds. One incredible true story.
Check out the trailer here!

For Name that Tune, we highlighted one of our Artist NewsDay Tuesday artists – Lauren Daigle! The song we picked was a song that had a prominent theme at our 2018 WNZR Leadership Team retreat, and was the song I actually led for worship in partnership with my devotional. The song? Trust in You.

Congratulations to Grace from Mt. Veron! She guessed correctly!

As always, thanks for tuning in!

Radio Day Mystery Monday

August 20th is one of our favorite holidays here at WNZR – yes, it’s National Radio Day!
Firstly, we would like to thank you for your support of this radio station.
We wouldn’t be celebrating today without your financial support, your thoughts, and prayers. SO today we’re celebrating not only the history of radio, but also, of our station.

Here’s some history on the radio itself…
The radio’s inception required an international effort. The research of German Heinrich Hertz proved electrical could be transmitted wirelessly. The multiple patents of the prolific inventor Nikola Tesla provided the radio with the Tesla coil. Born in Croatia, Tesla also contributed many patents involving alternating current advancing the science and production of numerous inventions. When it comes to the first commercially available wireless, Guglielmo Marconi receives the honor.

Before wireless became a function of music and entertainment programs, the wireless radio served more of a military and a regular public service role.  Much like the dits and dots of a telegram, the wireless transmitted information. On board the Titanic at the time of its sinking, a Marconi wireless was in use. However, in 1906 The first radio broadcast of voice and music purely for entertainment purposes occurred. Reginald Fessenden transmitted the program from Brant Rock, Massachusetts for the general public to hear.

  • Radio ownership grew from two out of five homes in 1931 to four out of five homes in 1938.
  • According to FCC statistics, at the end of 2012, there were more than 15,000 licensed broadcast radio stations in the U.S.
  • On October 1, 1999, the first satellite radio broadcast occurred. Worldspace aired the broadcast in Africa.

How about our station?
Well, we are a couple of months away from entering our 32nd year of broadcasting!
For Mystery Monday, we asked you this question…
What year and what month did WNZR start broadcasting?

The answer? October of 1986!

Congratulations to Karolyn from Mt. Vernon for guessing correctly.

Our station serves so many purposes, and one of them is to share the message of the gospel with our community, but also to help students of MVNU get real life, hands on experience in the radio field.

WNZR is a group of people who love Jesus Christ, and want to know Him more. As a body of believers, we feel that WNZR is not just a radio station, it is a ministry. We take this calling seriously, and strive to live our lives as we feel Jesus would.

Our Theme Verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, he will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

This was also a verse we talked, at length, about at our WNZR Leadership Team retreat. We’re making it a goal to trust God in every aspect of our lives instead of leaning on our own understanding. That includes on the air, off the air, as individuals, as a WNZR family, as a student, as a person, and as a child of God. We’re trusting that God will work these situations for His glory and in His time.

Thanks for listening!

Prayers of confession

Today, guest hosts Eddie and Cierra continued sharing devotionals from the book Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr.

This week, we’re continuing to share prayers from the word to confess sin and to humble ourselves.

Dr. Banks writes that of all of Jesus’ names and titles, the one that he likes best is the one that the Pharisees gave him: Friend of Sinners. It may have been one of Jesus’ favorites too, because in Luke 19:10 he said he “came to seek and save those who are lost.” The title Friend of Sinners captures the reason he came better than any other title.

There is a lot of honesty in these prayers. 2 Samuel 7:20 says, “You know what your servant is really like.” Psalm 19:12 says, “how can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.”

There’s a real humility in these prayers and a description of what sin does to us. In Psalm 31:10 it says, “sin has drained my strength…I am wasting away from within.” Psalm 40 says, “My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out.”

All of these prayers clearly show God’s holiness, plus a humble admission that his judgment of sin is justified and the discipline he gives is deserved…

But you also find JOY.

Psalm 32 verses 1 through 2 says, “Oh what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven; whose sin is put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt; whose lives are lived in complete honesty.”

Psalm 66 reminds us, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” So these prayers are teaching us the best way to pray and mark the path that leads to our Savior’s heart. God has left us these prayers in the word to show us the way back to him.

The Bible reminds us that God knows us completely…yet he still loves us. Our final verse today is 2 Samuel 7:20-22, which says, “What more can I say to you? You know what your servant is really like, sovereign Lord. Because of your promise and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known to your servant.  How great you are, O, Sovereign Lord!  There is no one like you.  We have never even heard of another God like you!”

Marty Bell – Knox Idol
Jill Macklin – Cheer Competition
Pat Crow – General Festival Festivities
Susan Kharl – Youth Showcase

Today, for Praise Thursday, we shared a devotional from Jesus Calling, a book from Sarah Young. Here’s what we talked about…

Do not worry about tomorrow! That is not a suggestion, but a command. I divided time into days and nights so that you would have manageable portions of life to handle.
My grace is sufficient for you, but it is sufficient only one day at a time.
When you worry about the future, you heap day upon day of troubles onto your flimsy frame. You stagger under this heavy load, which I never intended you to carry.

Throw off this oppressive burden with one quick ‘thrust of trust’. Anxious thoughts meander about and crisscross in your brain, but trusting Me brings you directly into my presence.
As you affirm your faith, and your trust in Me, the shackles of worry fall off instantly.
Enjoy My presence continually by trusting Me at all times.

Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

2nd Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Psalm 62:8
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

Thanks for listening! See you at the Festival!
