Invention Month Mysteries

You learn something new every day, don’t you?
Today, we learned that August is ‘Inventors Month’!

So today on the Afternoon Drive, we celebrated Inventors Month!

Here’s some history on how it came about…
National Inventors Month was started in 1998 by the United Inventors Association of the USA (UIA-USA), the Academy of Applied Science, and Inventors’ Digest magazine. As Joanne Hayes-Rines, editor of Inventors’ Digest and a sponsor of National Inventors Month, put it: “We want to recognize those talented, brave individuals who dare to be blatantly creative, and therefore different, and whose accomplishments affect every facet of our lives.”

When we think of inventors, we usually think of people like Alexander Graham Bell or Henry Ford, and there’s nothing wrong with that—those people had an enormous impact on what life looks like today, having invented the telephone and the automobile, respectively. However, in an age of gadgets, gizmos and electronics, it’s easy to forget that there is still incredible progress being made in technological innovation. Mark Zuckerberg, who created the most effective way to share pictures our cats ever. Stephen Hawking, whose insightful theories in cosmology have shaped the way humanity sees the universe.

Inventor’s Month is dedicated to recognizing the creativity of inventors everywhere, dead and alive, and of course encouraging everybody to get inventive.

Let’s take a look at some of the inventors that have shaped today’s world as we know it…
1. Thomas Edison
You can’t think of inventions and not have Edison’s name come to mind.
He was born in Ohio, and grew up in Michigan.

Edison had 6 children. Marion Estelle, Thomas Alva Jr, William Leslie, Madeline, Charles, and Theodore Miller.
That, consequently, was our Mystery Question today for Mysterty Monday!
We asked you to name 2 of the 6 Edison children.
Congratulations to Bonnie of Mt. Vernon for answering correctly!

Which Edison child’s name was your favorite?
I’m partial to the name William Leslie m’self!

Thomas Edison was an inventor who accumulated 2,332 patents worldwide for his inventions. 1,093 of Edison’s patents were in the United States, but other patents were approved in countries around the globe.
Telegraphs, telephones, phonographs, the electric lamp, the electric vote recorder, the electric generator, and the kinetgraphic camera, just to name a few. .

2. Henry Ford
Ford was an American Captain of Industry.
There is a common misconception that Henry Ford invented the automobile, which is untrue. Though Ford did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, he did develop and manufacture the first automobile that many middle-class Americans could afford. In doing so, Ford converted the automobile from an expensive curiosity into a practical conveyance that would profoundly impact the landscape of the 20th century. His introduction of the Model T automobile revolutionized transportation and American industry.

As the owner of the Ford Motor Company, he became one of the richest and best-known people in the world. He is credited with “Fordism”: mass production of inexpensive goods coupled with high wages for workers. Ford had a global vision, with consumerism as the key to peace. His intense commitment to systematically lowering costs resulted in many technical and business innovations, including a franchise system that put dealerships throughout most of North America and in major cities on six continents.

Prayers of Humility and Confession

Today, we continue sharing devotionals from the book Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr. James Banks, who serves as a pastor at Peace Church in Durham, North Carolina and is a regular writer for Our Daily Bread.

In this short book, we are reminded that the prayers of the Bible are an amazing gift from God and they have so much to teach us.

This is what Alex and Stephen Kendrick talk about in their book The Battle Plan for Prayer in the chapter called ‘Praying the Word.’ In the prayers of scripture, we find words that can help carry our thoughts and emotions to God. He invites us closer to him through the prayers of the Bible.

This week, we’re sharing prayers from the word to confess sin and to humble ourselves.

Dr. Banks writes that of all of Jesus’ names and titles, the one that he likes best is the one that the Pharisees gave him: Friend of Sinners. It may have been one of Jesus’ favorites too, because in Luke 19:10 he said he “came to seek and save those who are lost.” The title Friend of Sinners captures the reason he came better than any other title. Why is that? Because a true friend will love you even when you don’t deserve it and will look for you when you’ve lost your way. Jesus does all of that and more. John 15:13 reminds us that there is “no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

All of us like friendship, but we need to remember that friendship is a two-way street. So as we think of Jesus as our friend, we need to ask ourselves – what kind of friend am I to Jesus? If I’m someone’s friend I’m going to care about our relationship. I’ll be mindful of things that could be hurtful or cause distance between us. Nothing causes Jesus more pain than sin. Remembering how much my sins cost Jesus helps me be a better friend to him. So the Bible’s prayers of confession and humbling ourselves before God also remind us to be a better friend.

There is a lot of honesty in these prayers. 2 Samuel 7:20 says, “You know what your servant is really like.” Psalm 19:12 says, “how can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.”

There’s a real humility in these prayers and a description of what sin does to us. In Psalm 31:10 it says, “sin has drained my strength…I am wasting away from within.” Psalm 40 says, “My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out.”

All of these prayers clearly show God’s holiness, plus a humble admission that his judgment of sin is justified and the discipline he gives is deserved…

But you also find JOY.

Psalm 32 verses 1 through 2 says, “Oh what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven; whose sin is put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt; whose lives are lived in complete honesty.”

Psalm 66 reminds us, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” So these prayers are teaching us the best way to pray and mark the path that leads to our Savior’s heart. God has left us these prayers in the word to show us the way back to him.

This week’s closing verse is Hebrews 10:22-23. “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

Thanks for joining us today for the Afternoon Drive!
Todd and Lilly in the studio with you today with Joe Rinehart out at the Knox County Fair!

Today we heard results from some of the shows at the fair, and talked to some of the students participating in 4-H!

Almost 1,000 Knox County youth are participating in shows and exhibits at the Knox County Fair. This year, there are 1,800 projects at the Fair, 715 kids are showing over 1,300 animal projects.

We’re so proud of all the 4-H students that are competing this week!

Be sure to register for our prize baskets on our website WNZR.fm, or in person at the fair!

Our Mystery Monday question today was, of course, fair related!
And today, it was 4-H related! We asked you to recite the 4-H pledge!

Congrats to Kathy from Mt. Vernon!
Kathy correctly recited the pledge which is as follows…
“I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service,
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”

Kathy was actually in 4-H, and she showed horses, so congratulations to her and way to go for remembering the pledge!

And congratulations to John of Mt. Vernon who correctly answered our Casting Crowns trivia!

Thanks for listening!
