Gokey Game Time Tuesday!

Welcome in to the Afternoon Drive, where we love to give you prizes!
Today on Game Time Tuesday, we played Song Poetry and Name That Tune!

Today’s Song Poetry Lyrics were…
“You always think I’m somewhere on a mountain top
But never think behind bars”

A tough one, yes, but congratulations to Michelle from Mt. Vernon!
She correctly guessed that it was Danny Gokey with “More than you think I am”.

Our Name that Tune song today was “Grace Got You” from MercyMe!
Congratulations to McKenna from Mt. Vernon!

We heard some more from our Proverbs 31 Ministry friend, Lysa Terkurst.

“Life. Sometimes it hands us messy. Sometimes it hands us flowers. The unpredictability of it all is what makes life exciting and heartbreaking all at the same time. But most importantly, it reminds us to remain completely dependent on the Lord.

I don’t know what your life holds right now, sweet friend. But I do know the One who is holding you. Keep trusting Him. Keep walking with Him. He’s got you.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10.

We CAN Trust God Through our Trials.

You may be saying at this point, “God sure expects a lot from us in our trials.” He does, but there is nothing God expects that He has not supplied us with the power to accomplish. And best of all, we can trust God to bring us through our trials. Sometimes we just need the proper motivation to hang in there and triumph over trials.
Speaking of the proper motivation, I heard about a man who was walking home late one chilly, rainy night. He was so tired and cold that he decided to take a shortcut through the town cemetery. Unfortunately, he didn’t see an open grave and he fell headlong into the hole. He panicked, clawing at the sides of the grave and hollering for help. But after a while, it became apparent that no one was around and he couldn’t get enough of a grip to climb out. He was so exhausted that he huddled down in one side of the grave and fell asleep.
As it turned out, another man was walking through the cemetery in the wee hours of the morning. He also fell into the same open grave and, like the first man, began yelling for help and trying to climb out. His shouts woke the first man, who was hidden from sight in the darkness. The first man reached out, laid a cold, clammy hand on the second man and said “Forget it, brother. You’ll never make it. I’ve been trying to get out of here for hours.” But the second man made it out.

– There is a Great Cloud Above Us –

With the proper motivation, we can do almost anything. The recipients of the letter of Hebrews needed the right motivation in their trials, which is why the author went through God’s Hall of Faith in chapter 11 and pointed to some of the Old Testament examples of people who won out over their trials with God’s help. Then the author came back with his best words of encouragement, motivation and admonition in Hebrews 12:1-3.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

The point of Hebrews 12:1 is that if God could keep His eye on Abraham when he left everything he knew to move to a strange land and live in tents, then God won’t lose track of you. If God could sustain Moses when he left the pleasures and wealth of Egypt for the life of a lowly shepherd, then God can sustain you. You are not out there by yourself. Men and women of God have been living by faith in some of the most trying of circumstances, and since Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday, we can trust Him to keep us by His power. You can trust God in your trials.

A Turtle Who Knew!

Today on Who Knew Wednesday, we celebrated World Turtle Day!

The American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization established in World Turtle day in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtles. The day was created as an annual observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson, founders of ATR, advocate humane treatment of all animals, including reptiles. Since 1990, ATR has placed about 4,000 tortoises and turtles in caring homes.

You can check out the World Turtle Day website here!

Below is some information on the lovable sea creatures!

The Turtle Habitat:

  • Freshwater turtles live in ponds and lakes, and they climb out of the water onto logs or rocks to bask in the warm sun.
  • Tortoises are land animals. Their feet are round and stumpy, adapted for walking on land. They also dig burrows with their strong forelimbs, and slip underground when the sun gets too hot.
  • Turtles spend most of their lives in water. They are adapted for aquatic life, with webbed feet or flippers and a streamlined body. Sea turtles rarely leave the ocean, except to lay eggs in the sand.
  • Terrapins live on land and in water, usually in swamps, ponds, lakes and rivers.

Turtle Size:

  • The largest sea turtle species is the leatherback turtle. It weighs 600 to 1,500 lbs and is about 4.5 to 5.25 feet long.
  • The Galápagos tortoise grows up to 6 feet long and 573 lbs.
  • One of the smallest turtles is the speckled Cape tortoise. Its shell is 3.1 inches long. It weighs about 5 ounces.
    9b35d32637cdfee37fb6d0918c99fb63.jpg

This little buddy right here is a speckled cape tortise.

Body:

  • A turtle’s shell is a modified ribcage and part of its vertebral column.
  • The top part of the shell is called the carapace, and the bottom is called the plastron.
  • The shell is made up of about 60 bones that are covered by plates called scutes.
  • And the scutes are made of keratin, the same material that makes up humans’ fingernails.

Diet:

  • Most turtles are omnivores; they eat a variety of different things, depending on their species. Musk turtles eat mollusks, plants, small fish and insects. The cooter turtle is mostly vegetarian, and the green sea turtle only eats grasses and algae.
  • The alligator snapping turtle lures in fish with its tongue, which looks like a worm. It wiggles its tongue to attract a hungry fish and then snaps down on it with its strong jaw. It also eats aquatic plants, snakes, frogs, fish, worms, clams, crayfish and other turtles.

Other Facts:

  • Sometimes they cry, but not because they’re sad.
Sea turtles have glands that help to empty excess salt from their eyes, making it appear as though they’re crying, but not to worry, they’re just doing some spring cleaning.
  • All tortoises are in fact turtles. They belong to the same class. But different families.
  • Tortoises and turtles are different in classification families. The major difference between the two is that tortoises dwell on land, while turtles live in the water some or nearly all of the time.

A McKinley Mystery Monday!

Good afternoon and welcome to another beautiful week here in Mt. Vernon!

This is Todd’s second Mystery Monday, but his first one doing the Mystery Box.
Todd hid something in our box and it was my job to figure it out.
I did not figure it out, so this week, we had a stumper!
Next Mystery Monday, Todd is going to see if Joe can guess what’s in the Mystery Box!

Today we also shared with you a ‘This Day in History” fact…
On this day in 1881, in Washington, D.C., humanitarians Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons found the American National Red Cross, an organization established to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters in congruence with the International Red Cross.

The first disaster response was in 1881 when a forest fire in Michigan burned through a million acres in 24 hours. The fire claimed almost 300 lives and left thousands homeless. Red Cross chapters collected food and supplies which were shipped to Michigan to assist the 14,000 people in need of help.

Todd and I are also going to begin sharing a couple of Summer Fun Recipies every day on the show to get you ready for the season…
I shared a delicious recipie for taco dogs! Check it out here!
Todd shared this mouthwatering Raspberry Icebox Cake! Link to the recipie here!
And oh yes, we of course had to mix the two dishes…
Consume at your own risk. Brie Cheese and Raspberry Jam Hotdog, Right here.

I also get really interested in sports when it comes to the NBA Finals or the NHL search for the Stanley Cup, so here’s what I’ve learned about the NBA…

The Cleveland Cavs have 1 Championship title. They won that in 2016 against the Golden State Warriors. And they have 4 Confrence Titles, looking to grab a 5th if they can pull off a huge upset and take the series from the Celtics.
The Boston Celtics have 17 Championship titles, most recently in 2008. They also have 21 Confrence Titles, and are well on their way to getting a 22nd if they take the Cavs.

The Cavs are going to have to rely on more than just Lebron James if they want to pull off an upset and take this series and rally for the Championship Title again.

The Golden State Warriors have 5 Championship titles, most recently last year, 2017, taking the title after beating the Cavs. They also have 9 Confrence titles; 3 in the East and 6 in the West.
The Houston Rockets have 2 Championship Titles, most recently in 1995. The Rockets also have 4 Confrence Titles.

The Rockets may have James Harden, but they are the underdogs. The Warriors just have to keep up the energy to take this series and get back to the Championships.

Praise Thursday: Maturing through Trials

One of the things that Dr. Evans has been writing about (and we’ve been discussing over the last couple of weeks) is the fact that God wants to mature us through our trials.

The basic principle is that trials help us grow up and help us understand that sometimes, our crisis will be a short, momentary interruption. Sometimes these trials will be long-term. Still, God helps us achieve a new level of growth regardless of the length of the trial.

The section we’re talking about today is speeding our spiritual growth and it comes in the book of James. James 1:4 reminds us that God’s purpose for our trials is that we grow until we are “perfect and complete,” or fully mature.

So today we’re going to talk about the difference between physical and spiritual growth.

We all see this.  Sometimes you meet people who have only been Christians for 5 or less years, but they’re more mature spiritually than others who have been saved for 30 years.

So the speed at which we grow is directly related to the speed at which we go in fully committing Our Lives to the Lord.

Dr. Evans gives a couple of practical examples. Two families will experience severe financial trials:

  • The first family, by their own testimony, recognizes that they have not been good stewards of the resources God gave them, and the Holy Spirit convicts them of the need to transfer their trust from money to their Lord. They learn the lesson start giving to God first and trust Him to turn their situation around.
  • The second family keeps saying, “I know I’m supposed to be giving to the Lord but I can’t afford to right now. I was going to start here and start there…” but…they never do it. Now we all understand that emergencies will happen to all of us, but Dr. Evans is talking about believers who have been doing this dance for years and still haven’t grown to the point that they can trust God completely.

Now this illustration can also work the other way. Many Christians say that even though they were doing quite well financially without honoring God, they pay a heavy price in terms of ill-health, ruined marriage, lost peace of mind or serious family problems. And in many cases when they persisted in their lack of faith in God, it resulted in their financial house crumbling down.

In Hebrews chapter 5 verses 13 and 14 there is a difference presented between milk and meat – the diet of babies and adults.

13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

We know that babies can’t take meat because their systems are not mature enough to digest it. The same principle is true in the spiritual realm.

In passages like this, the term milk is generally understood to represent the basic easier doctrines of the faith like sin and salvation. Meat, is the deeper or harder to understand parts of scripture.  So while John 3:16 would be milk, talking about the high priesthood of Jesus in Hebrews 5 and 6 would be meat.

The difference between milk and meat goes deeper than a difference in the amount of Bible knowledge you have in your head. Milk, biblically understood, is elementary teaching about Christ, or understanding what the Bible says.

Meat then, is understanding and applying what the Bible says. When you understand what God is telling you in his word, and when you comprehend what it means and what it requires, that’s great; but when you start applying it to your life practically that’s when you start to flourish.

The other trap we fall into is that we want the meat to happen very quickly and we don’t have the patience to go through day by day, month by month and year by year in the practice that leads to being trained or becoming spiritually mature.

The process takes time. God wants us to emerge from our trials more mature than when we started. God is not going to rush the process he wants us to practice, so we will be fully-trained and ready to go.

The Holy Spirit’s job is to apply Divine truth to your life so you can make Godly decisions between good and bad, right and wrong. Maturity is the ability to make decisions with the truth not just recite the truth.

When there is no ability to make decisions, there is no maturity.

Dr. Evans is trying to remind us that when God sends us on a trial, it’s a practice session. He’s calling us to put into practice on Monday the truth that we said “amen” to on Sunday.

Just like a football team who works hard to execute its plays in practice so that in the real game they can execute properly, God wants us to practice righteousness until our senses are well-trained and we are mature… because the world, our own sinful flesh and the enemy are waiting to resist us.

We become spiritually mature when the information we take in, or the milk, is translated into our daily practice, or the meat. Why can God be trusted in our trials?  Because trials help us develop spiritual maturity, which in turn glorifies God.

THANKS FOR LISTENING!
