The other thing we promised to do was talk about barbecue IN space.

“The crew’s American menu begins with crackers, brie cheese and sausage. The entrée features grilled chicken, Southwestern corn and baked beans. The meal concludes with the quintessential American dessert—apple pie. “

Space food has come a long way since the early days of the space program. “Currently, there are about 180 different types of food and beverage items available. The food items range from shrimp cocktail to seasoned scrambled eggs.” Read about how space food has come a long way since the early days of the space program.
You can read the whole article on our Astronauts indulging in their southern meal here!

In other space news, there may be a cold war unfolding. In. Space. Yes.

Space is strategically vital. About 1,700 active satellites currently orbit Earth — nearly half sent up by the U.S. — and they’ve become critical to the modern world’s economy and daily activities. The Air Force’s 33 Global Positioning System satellites provide timing signals used by Wall Street traders and cellphone networks, as well as powering navigation-based apps like Google Maps and Uber.

God Wants us to Mature through Trials

This Praise Thursday, we continued our series from the book “Can God be Trusted in our Trials” from Dr. Tony Evans. Today we started the chapter called “God Wants us to Mature through our Trials”.
It’s encouraging to look at the beginning and the end of the trials that biblical people like Job went through because we see that God is faithful. Sometimes, though, when we’re in the middle of a hard time, we can’t see where we’re going and so we can be tempted to quit or turn back in an attempt to ease the pressure.
To do this is to fail the test and thus fail to grow toward spirtual maturity. Since we all come to a point of frustration or discouragement at one time or another, we need a word from God to exhort us and spur us on. We have this word in the book of Hebrews, which was written to the Jewish Christians who were under the pressure of persecution and trials for their faith in Jesus Christ. The Hebrews were buckling under their circumstances, and they were toying with the temptation to chuck their christianity and go back to the familiar ways and rituals of Judiasm. As a result, they stopped growing and were like adults who couldn’t get past kindergarten.
The author of Hebrews wrote them in no uncertain terms, “Don’t quit! Christ is superior to anyone and anything else. There’s nothing to go back to, so stop playing around in kindergarten and start growing. The basic theme of Hebrews can be summed up as “Let us press on to maturity.”
This verse from Hebrews 6:1 comes at the end of a very enlightening section hitting on acuiring the maturity that we need to succede in our trials.

Hebrews 5:10 tells us that the author was getting ready to launch into a more in-depth discussion of an old testament priest named Melchizedek and the implications of his priesthood. The author of Hebrews realizes that the reader isn’t ready for the plunge into the deep end of the faith concerning Melchizedek, so he pulls back to deliver an exhortation.
“Concerning him, we have much to say and it ias hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.” This word ‘dull’ is taken from a Greek word that literally means ‘mule-headed’. It wasn;t that the writer couldn’t explain about Melchzedek, the problem was that the Hebrews couldn’t receive it because their spirtual comprehension had ben dulled by their stubborn determination not to hear.
The Hebrews did have time to grow and mature, because they were told “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.”
The book of Hebrews was written about thirty years after Jesus’ resurrection and the founding of the church on the day of Pentecost. By this time, most of these Hebrew believers had probably been Christians long enough that they should have been in their spirtual adulthood, but that was not the case.

Growth and maturity take time. As Hebrews 5:14 says it takes ‘practice’ to train our senses to discen the difference between good and evil.

The priniciple has huge implications for the issue of trials. We tend to think of these as short interruptions or momentary crises that will soon pass if we can just hang in there. Thankfully, some trials do pass quickly but many don’t. A long illness or a wayward child can lead to many dark nights of the soul and body. Only God can determine how long a trial needs to last to bring us to the level of new growth He wants us to acheive.

A Mother’s Day Who Knew!

God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.

Today we also continued to go over our tips to help you students finish out your school year strong! Here are tips 5 and 6!
5. DON’T PROCRASTINATE
Devote an hour or so very night to reviewing your notes, reading your textbook or getting ahead on some future assignments. Leaving things til the last minute will only stress you out, believe me!
6. Relax
Set some time aside for yourself to breathe and do some of the things that YOU ENJOY doing. Take some time to draw or pick up your guitar or read a book that’s not for school. This will help you de-stress and refocus with a better mood.

Finish strong & thanks for listening!

Summer Hits – Game Time Tuesday!

We love giving you chances to win here on the Afternoon Drive, and today we gave you two chances, one with Spelling Ebb, and Song Poetry!

We also love sharing some uplifting news with you on Tuesdays!
Here’s a story of a good boy named Chrome that saved a family by letting them know their house was on fire!

For Song Poetry today, we took one of our favorite songs from Summer ’17!
Here are the Song Poetry lyrics…

“I got my armor now
No fear no doubt can shoot me down
I got my armor now
No fear no doubt gonna shoot me down
Down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down.”

That’s “Bulletproof” from Citizen Way!
Congratulations to Travis from Mt. Vernon who guessed correctly!

We know there are still a lot of students still in school, so today we continued to share our tips to finish out the school year strong with tips 3 & 4!
3. Get organized.
Create a study plan and try your hardest to stick to it, especially during a period of reading. It’s unrealistic to say that you’re going to study all day, every day during a specific time, so set aside time to study for 2-3 classes a day, using the rest of that time to manage the other obligations you have.
4. Take notes by hand.
Writing notes down compared to typing or recording them increases your chances in remembering the material. Color code your notes and come back to them when it’s time to study for your tests.

Tune in tomorrow for tips 5 & 6!

A Summer Mystery Monday!

Welcome to the first full week of summer for us here at MVNU!

Now, for those of you who are still in school, keep going strong!
We’re going to share two strategies every day here on the Drive this week to help you finish out your school year on a high note.
Here are the first two tips from Taylor Farmon with HerCampus.com…

  1. Refocus.
Take the time to create a plan and “get your life together” before the madness of finals begins.
  2. Find the perfect study place.
If you’re anything like me, trying to get work done in my room is almost impossible. Whether it’s the local Starbucks or a quiet space in the library, find the place with the least amount of distractions where you can stay focused.

Today was also Mystery Monday, which means the return of the Mystery Box!
Joe hid something and I, with your help, had to guess what it was!
Here was what we learned!
It is not an object that people are commonly allergic to.
It IS an object that people commonly have in their house, but it varys by taste.
It can be purchased at any regular supermarket.

The item in the box?
Caramel Corn!

Congratulations to Dan from Howard who guessed correctly!

Today was also Roast Leg of Lamb Day, and being the Afternoon Drive, we would be reimse if we didn’t share a couple of recipies, right?

Here’s a traditional recipie!
This is a garlic and rosemary recipie!
And one from my favorite Iron Chef, Alex Guarnaschelli.
