Praise Thursday

Today on the Afternoon Drive we took a ride to the movies! We dove into the meaning of the Kendrick Brother’s movie, War Room and the meaning of prayer.

We used the You Version Bible App and you can check out the devotional here.

Remember to create a battle plan for taking down the enemy.  The Kendrick Brothers help us have a richer prayer life that will bring us closer to God.

We also met our new co-host Eddie! He is a freshman from Gahanna, Ohio.  Eddie is a Journalism and Media Production major and enjoys the rocky road ice cream in the MVNU dinning commons!  We are so excited to have him on board!

We can’t forget the Word of the Day!

Who knew about allergies?

It’s that time the year when the sniffle and sneezes happen.  Spring allergies have arrived! This is the time we start asking ourselves, Why? How? What?  Who Knew Wednesday was all about allergies on the Afternoon Drive!

WebMD says, “The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen — tiny grains released into the air by trees, grasses, and weeds for the purpose of fertilizing other plants. When pollen grains get into the nose of someone who’s allergic, they send the immune system into overdrive.”

Do you want to get rid of these pesky allergens?  The Morning Thing found 9 ways to to do just that! Check out this article from today.com.  We can fight the sniffles!

We can’t forget the Word of the Day! Today’s word is hoi polloi. It is a noun and means; the masses.  Now you can sound smarter to your friends!

Have a great Wednesday night!

Game Time and Road Trip Tuesday

IMG_20160419_180126475

Today I stayed in-house giving you a chance to win with Game Time Tuesday while Jess traveled with the WNZR crew (Marcy, Jenna, Rachel, Emily and Cameron) to see ‘This Is Winter Jam,’ a one-night movie simulcast event.

Today’s song poetry was from Hollyn’s song ‘Alone,’ while Name That Tune was from Chris Tomlin’s ‘Forever.’ Congratulations to Damika and Kendrick, who both won $5 gift certificates from Troyer’s of Apple Valley and the Pier House Coffee Shop!

Today’s Word of the Day was KOINE (koy-NAY), which is a noun meaning the Greek language commonly spoken and written in eastern Mediterranean countries in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Thanks for listening!

Mystery Monday goes west…

Nevada-sign-flickr

Today we head to the state of Nevada for our Mystery Monday question…

Nevada residents lead the United States in this characteristic.  What can 86% of them say about themselves?

Answer? They WERE NOT born in Nevada.

Congratulations to Krissta from Mount Vernon who answered the question correctly and wins a $5 certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley and the Pier House Coffee Shop.

Our Word of the Day is UNCTUOUS (UNK-choo-is), which is an adjective meaning something fatty, oily, greasy or plastic in appearance.  For a person, it can also be applied, meaning  the person has an insincere, smooth-talking manner.

Thanks for listening!

Wafflestompers?

wafflestompers

Our word of the day today…well…I would call them hiking boots.  But WAFFLESTOMPERS refer to high ankle boots with ridged soles, used for hiking.  Apparently this is an Americanism from the 1970’s.

Going to war with the right weapon

ShirerPoster

Today we began a devotional series inspired by the film War Room, which focuses on prayer and features speaker and author Priscilla Shirer in the lead role.  Priscilla and her brother, singer Anthony Evans, will be part of a nationwide simulcast event on Saturday, April 23rd, and Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene will be the local host church.

Find details on the event here

Today we shared 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 as the opening verse that helps us understand how prayer is our greatest ‘weapon’:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

This is what Alex Kendrick writes in the War Room devotional, Overflow:
“Before you engage in an issue, a battle, or whatever your problems are, spend time in prayer first. Go to your war room—your prayer closet—and seek the Lord. When you commit to prayer and you seek God first, you are going before the One that knows the solution and can help you through any circumstance. So how do we fight? We fight in prayer, first seeking in our war room the One who can handle anything. Trust Him, keep your faith in Him, and go to war in prayer.”

We also played the song Victor’s Crown  which reminds that ‘every high thing must come down and every stronghold shall be broken.’ Christ will have the ultimate victory!

Our word of the day is miche (mitch), which means to lurk out of sight, which is like hiding and creeping around. We don’t recommend this!

Thanks for listening!

Who Knew It Was Scrabble Day?!

Today is Scrabble Day, a day created to celebrate Scrabble, and since it’s Who Knew Wednesday, we told you a ton of fun fact about Scrabble.

Did you know Scrabble is an actual word? It means to scratch vigorously.

In 1938, American Alfred Mosher Butts created the game as a variation on an earlier word game he invented called Lexiko. He called the game “Criss-Crosswords,” added the 15×15 gameboard and the crossword-style game play.

n 1948, James Brunot, a resident of Connecticut – and one of the few owners of the original Criss-Crosswords game – bought the rights to manufacture the game in exchange for granting Butts a royalty on every unit sold. Mr. Brunot simplified the rules and also changed the name of the game to “Scrabble”, a real word which means “to scratch frantically”. Scrabbles big break came in 1952 when Jack Straus, president of Macy’s, played the game on vacation. Upon returning from vacation, he was surprised to find that his store did not carry the game. He placed a large order and within a year, Scrabble was a household name.

Andrew from Mt. Vernon was our winner of a $5 gift certificate to Pier House coffee shop of Troyer’s of Apple Valley, for correctly answering our trivia question: What was inventor Butts’ day job? Answer: He was an architect.

We shared some Scrabble strategies that you can find by clicking here.

We also told you about how Bingo and Scrabble are connected. When a player uses all 7 of their Scrabble tiles in a single play, it’s called Bingo. Plus, when you get a Bingo, 50 additional points are added to the score of your word!

Our Word of the Day was oxyphenbutazone, which is the highest scoring word possible in a game of Scrabble. Oxyphenbutazone is an anti-inflammatory, and will score you a nice 1,778 points. You can read some of the other highest-scoring words over here.

Have a wonderful Wednesday evening!

Game Time Tuesday – 4/12/16

Today was Game Time Tuesday on the Afternoon Drive.

We played Song Poetry using the lyrics Your love is / Like radiant diamonds / Bursting inside us. Kathy from Howard called in and correctly guessed that those lyrics belong to NEEDTOBREATHE’s song Brother.

Julie from Fredericktown was our winner for Name That Tune, guessing that our clip was from Trust In You by Lauren Daigle.

Our Word of the Day was hobnob, a verb meaning to associate familiarly. You can read more on that here.

We also gave you an update on our Lifeline 2016 total, which is currently at $66,319! Thank you so much for all of our support during Lifeline and all throughout the year.

Have a terrific Tuesday evening!

-Jess & Joe
