The Park District and Millwood Church of Christ make it happen!

Today our focus is on the Knox County Park District and the Millwood Church of Christ, who have teamed again to bring a new activity to the popular Fire and Ice event that benefits Food For The Hungry.   Fire and Ice 2021 will be held as two drive-through events, one at Wolf Run Park and one at Millwood Church of Christ. The drive-through events are scheduled for Saturday, December 11 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at both locations.

Luminaria will magically guide you through the Wolf Run Regional Park parking lot located at 17621 Yauger Road in Mount Vernon. There, Park District staff will be on hand to retrieve boxed and canned food items from your vehicle and accept monetary donations for Food For The Hungry. No need to park and leave your car as the drive-through luminaria will guide you to the drop-off point in the parking lot.

Across the county, the Millwood Church of Christ located at 10900 Millersburg Road in Howard also has luminaria to guide you through the church parking lot at a drive-through event. At this location church personnel and volunteers will be on-hand to accept canned and boxed food items and monetary donations for Food For The Hungry.

Those overused phrases…

Today is cliche day, where we either celebrate, or complain about, those overused phrases at home, in the workplace or on the field!

I shared some of the overused business cliches, inspired by this article from TechRepublic.

  1. It’s a win-win situation – If you say this, no one has won anything.
  2. Think outside the box – This uncreative saying means you’re already stuck inside said box.
  3. In today’s world – It means now. Say now.
  4. Push the envelope – There is no special envelope to push. I swear

What about sports cliches?

  1. He just caught a body – this happens when a player dunks on another player
  2. GOAT – an acronym standing for ‘Greatest of All Time’
  3. A win is a win – you say this when you overcome errors and turnovers to win a game
  4. Next man up – recently been ingrained in society by notably tough coaches, who expect players to come off the bench and perform when someone gets injured
  5. He just took him to school – This happens when an older player makes a play that a younger player hasn’t seen yet.

Since it’s Sandwich Day, we also shared our all-time best sandwiches.

Joe: Redneck Reuben Sandwich from Barnes BBQ Express in Savannah, Georgia…plenty of sliced beef brisket piled high, topped with swiss cheese, cole slaw, and a kickin’, BBQ ranch sauce on grilled Texas toast.

Dylan: Peanut Butter Banana Burger from River City Café in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Topped with creamy peanut butter, banana, and mayo.

Celebrating spuds & a legendary President

Did you know that the name potatoes come from the Spanish word patata? If you didn’t, now you do!

Potatoes are one of the most common vegetables, and the most important crop in the world. They are part of the nightshade family. Potatoes are tubers, which is a swollen part of a stem that provides nutrients for the leafy part of the Solanum tubersomum plant. That plant is where potatoes come from. You can make a lot of different things from potatoes. Some of Dylan’s favorites are potato soup (he thinks his grandma’s is the best), mashed potatoes, french fries, and chips.

Potatoes were first cultivated in South America sometime between 5,000 and 7,000 BC, in the area that is now southern Peru and northwest Bolivia. They ended up being brought back to Europe in the sixteenth century. The first people to bring them to North America was the Scotch-Irish immigrants, who introduced them in 1719.

So, think about that for a second, potatoes were discovered somewhere between 5,000 and 7,000 BC but weren’t brought to North America until 1719! After the immigrants introduced potatoes, they quickly spread across the rest of the continent. Today, potatoes are grown in all 50 states in the U.S. with the largest producing state being Idaho (obviously).

Potatoes can also help your health. Potatoes contain all different kinds of vitamins, but the one that sticks out to me is vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 helps neurological functions. It helps relieve depression and stress and may even have a positive impact on ADHD. Potatoes help maintain blood pressure and overall health, helps keep skin healthy, and reduces cancer risk

Food combos, the Mick and the Heartbreaker…

Today’s Who Knew? tidbits include a famous (or infamous depending on your feelings) food combination and the birthday of one of baseball’s greatest sluggers.

CHICKEN AND WAFFLES

(from TheNationalDailyShow.com)

One of the South’s most famous food creations is chicken and waffles. But this delicious combination of flavors was actually born in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. During the 1940s, the Wells Supper Club was a popular late-night spot and attracted Jazz musicians after their gigs. They’d come in hungry, but found that they’d arrived too late for dinner, but too early for breakfast. In order to accommodate the musicians, the restaurant came up with the genius idea of serving a bit of both meals. Hence, fried chicken for dinner and waffles for breakfast.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken N’ Waffles in Southern California founded National Chicken and Waffles Day this year to highlight this delicious cuisine pairing and to dedicate the day as one of service and volunteerism. Check out Roscoe’s foundation website to see more ways to get involved and celebrate National Chicken and Waffles Day.
