Mystery Monday

Today Todd and I talked about something with an unsuspecting depth to it and that is names! It’s “Fun facts about names day”,  so we celebrated by sharing the meaning of our names and talking about names in general!

The meaning of Todd’s Name

The meaning of Hannah’s Name

The Power of God’s Names

We also talked with Joe Rinehart who is on the way to the NAIA basketball tournament to cheer on and report back the games with our MVNU Men’s Basketball Team, The Cougars! Click here if you want more information!

We played Mystery Box today, and because our item was a little abstract we jumped right into the touch test!

Todd had two questions to ask, here they are with the answers!

  1. Is this a piece of paper?  – yes!
  2. Is this paper blank? – No!

At this point, we asked for what was on the paper.

Congrats to Peter from Howard who guessed what was on the mystery box Paper, which was a list of names – our birthday list to be exact. He won that $5 Gift Card to Troyer’s of Apple Valley!

If you want to put your name on our birthday list or anniversary list, here is a link to the online form. You can also give us a call at (740) 397 – 9090 or (740) 397 – 9697 and ask to be put on the birthday or anniversary list!

Thank you so much for checking out our blog!

Collegiate Prayer, Kindness and Comfort

Today is the Collegiate Day of Prayer around the United States – we would LOVE for you to join us in praying for students, faculty and staff here at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.  Click here for more about it!

In our devotional “Time With God for Fathers,” by Jack Countryman, we’re looking at verses about kindness and comfort today.

A father, or parent for that matter, with a kind and tender heart can be a magnet to those he loves. Everyone craves love and encouragement. Kindness builds  confidence, security and trust for those around you.  We can reflect God’s kindness with those in our circle of family and mentorship.

Matthew 7:9-11…Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

The phrase “the God of all comfort” in 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 is encouraging.  It helps us remember that God will always come to our aid – it is His promise for those who follow Christ. He will see us through the trials we are facing.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any [a]trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our [b]consolation also abounds through Christ.

Space – The Who Knew Topic!

Today Todd and I shared some fun facts about space – why?  Well, because Todd’s taking Astronomy this semester and I just got hooked on the new CBS Star Trek series, Discovery.

Here are those things you can use to impress your friends:

THERE MAY BE LIFE ON MARS. Of all the planets in our solar system (apart from Earth), Mars is the one most likely to be hospitable to life. In 1986, NASA found what they thought may be fossils of microscopic living things in a rock recovered from Mars.

THERE IS A VOLCANO ON MARS THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF MOUNT EVEREST.

At 600 km wide and 21 km high, Olympus Mons is a volcano on Mars that may still be active, according to scientists. It is the tallest peak of any planet. However, the Rheasilvia central peak on the asteroid Vesta is taller at 22 km.

A FULL NASA SPACE SUIT COSTS $12,000,000.

While the entire suit costs a cool $12 million dollars, 70% of that cost is for the backpack and control module.

THERE MAY BE A PLANET MADE OUT OF DIAMONDS.

As space facts go, this is pretty impressive. Research by Yale University scientists suggests that a rocky planet called 55 Cancri e — which has a radius twice Earth’s, and a mass eight times greater – may have a surface made up of graphite and diamond. It’s 40 light years away but visible to the naked eye in the constellation of Cancer.

IF TWO PIECES OF THE SAME TYPE OF METAL TOUCH IN SPACE THEY WILL PERMANENTLY BOND.

This incredible fact is also known as cold welding and it happens because the atoms of two pieces of metal have no way of knowing they are separate. This doesn’t happen on Earth because of the air and water found between the pieces.

Thanks to theplanets.org for the OUT OF THIS WORLD information!

Today’s trivia was (Family Feud style) – Name something an astronaut might see outside the window of the international space station.

The top answers were: 1- Earth (29 votes) 2- the Moon (26) 3- the sun (14) 4- an alien (11) T5- a shuttle (4) and Mars (4) T6- a satellite (3) 8- astronaut (3) 9- a comet (3)

Congratulations to Juanita from Mount Vernon who won the $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley! Thanks for listening!

Trust and Gratitude

The word trust is mentioned in the Bible over 50 times.  Proverbs 3:5 is a signature verse for many as it reminds us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…and lean NOT on your own understanding…”  When we learn to trust and we accept this command, we can face ANY circumstance with confidence and hope!  This especially goes for parents as we raise our children.

Our confidence and hope doesn’t come from our strength, wisdom, energy or power.  It comes from God’s ability.

In our devotional “Time With God for Fathers,” by Jack Countryman, he also uses
2 Samuel 22:2-3:

And he said: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
My stronghold and my refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.

When we trust, we tap into an irresistible force that no one or nothing can successfully oppose!

Have you ever heard this? “Life is 10% what happens, 90% how we react to it.”  What about this one? “You need to change your attitude.” How we approach the challenges of like determines the kind of person we become. If we ponder negative things, our frame of mind will soon turn sour, pessimistic and negative. But, if we fill our minds with the things of God, the opposite happens.

Philippians 4:8 says:

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things arelovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
