How to be Happier with the AD!

Thanks for hanging out with us today!
We went over some was to help you be happier because the world has been really full of negativity lately so we thought it would be appropriate to share some ways to fight against that in the show today!

Here’s a link to 10 simple things you can do to be happier today!
And here’s some highlights of those tips below!

1. Exercise more – seven minutes might be enough
You don’t have to be depressed to gain benefit from exercise, though. It can help you to relax, increase your brain power and even improve your body image, even if you don’t lose any weight. A study in the Journal of Health Psychology 2 found that people who exercised felt better about their bodies, even when they saw no physical changes:
Body weight, shape and body image were assessed in 16 males and 18 females before and after both 6 × 40 mins exercise and 6 × 40 mins reading. Over both conditions, body weight and shape did not change. Various aspects of body image, however, improved after exercise compared to before.

2. Sleep more – you’ll be less sensitive to negative emotions
Negative stimuli get processed by the amygdala; positive or neutral memories gets processed by the hippocampus. Sleep deprivation hits the hippocampus harder than the amygdala. The result is that sleep-deprived people fail to recall pleasant memories, yet recall gloomy memories just fine.

3. Spend time with friends and family
Staying in touch with friends and family is one of the top five regrets of the dying. If you want more evidence that it’s beneficial for you, I’ve found some research that proves it can make you happier right now. Social time is highly valuable when it comes to improving our happiness, even for introverts. Several studies have found that time spent with friends and family makes a big difference to how happy we feel, generally.

4. Practice smiling – it can alleviate pain
A new study led by a Michigan State University business scholar suggests customer-service workers who fake smile throughout the day worsen their mood and withdraw from work, affecting productivity. But workers who smile as a result of cultivating positive thoughts – such as a tropical vacation or a child’s recital – improve their mood and withdraw less!

The Dad Manifesto for Valentine’s Day

Today we’re re-issuing a Dad Devotional from last week with a new twist:

A Father’s Prayer – Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

This prayer is simply, “Guide me with my words and actions toward my children…”

So how can we get some practical ideas this Valentine’s Day?

Here’s a great poster from author Jay Payleitner that hangs in my office…and reminds us of 52 things that we as ‘forever fathers’ should not forget…

Celebrate Radio Day with Us!

Thanks for hanging out with us today as we celebrate one of our favorite holidays- Radio Day! We celebrated today by sharing some history of the radio and sharing some stories about how radio has had an impact on our lives!

Radio waves were originally discovered by one Heinrich Hertz, following on the heels of his discovery of electromagnetic radiation. While experiments were performed in using this energy to transmit information, it wasn’t until 1890 that the word radio was first applied, when the radio-conducteur was invented by French Physicist Édouard Branly. Previous to this all forms of communication using this discovery was known as wireless communication, but eventually radio spread across the world and became the go-to term. Radio quickly spread to find applications in every conceivable venue, from transmitting information, to broadcasting music, and even serving as a way of transmitting stories. Long before there was TV, there was Radio Theater, (incidentally, this also brought along the creation of Foley artists, but that’s another story entirely).

Radio Day is a great opportunity to remember all those years we spent traveling with Walkman, and enjoying the best and newest music broadcast from your local radio station. Set aside your CD’s and MP3 players, and remember when you discovered new music by what they played on the radio. Dig out that old boom box and drag it down to your local beach or park to reconnect to your local radio community, and remember what the world was like before whatever music we wanted was at our fingertips.

Our Who-Knew Question for today was…
Q: What were the call letters for the first radio station?
A: KDKA
The first commercial radio station was KDKA in Pittsburgh, which went on the air in the evening of Nov. 2, 1920, with a broadcast of the returns of the Harding-Cox presidential election. The success of the KDKA broadcast and of the musical programs that were initiated thereafter motivated others to install similar stations; a total of eight were operating in the United States by the end of 1921.
Congratulations to Matthew who guessed correctly!

We also talked about Tortellini Day in our Who-Knew Food Corner!

The Buck Stops Here?

“The buck stops here” is a phrase made popular by former U.S. President Harry Truman in response to the other common phrase, “pass the buck.”  Truman’s Oval Office sign simply meant that taking responsibility sometimes meant NOT passing on the difficult decisions or actions.

In our devotional “Time With God for Fathers,” by Jack Countryman, he addresses this issue using the framework of Luke 12: 8-9…

“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

That means as fathers, we are responsible for the spiritual development of our families, especially our children. Like it or not, we will imprint our character, good, bad or indifferent, on our children. This verse reminds us to reflect God’s character and share His influence openly with our children.

We also shared a devotional today about taking that reflection of God’s character to loving our neighbor.  Exodus 20 commands us to reflect Christ’s love with those around us, also reminds us to avoid petty jealousy:

16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

This is then referenced again by Jesus in Matthew 22: 37-40…

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Jack Countryman reminds us here to take time each day as we mentor children to point out the power of God’s presence all around us.
