Who Knew Wednesday

Today Todd and I talked about a somewhat mysterious Christmas Carol, The 12 days of Christmas!

Here is what we talked about:

What are the 12 days of Christmas?

The 12 days of Christmas is the period that in Christian theology marks the span between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi, the three wise men. It begins on December 25  and runs through January 6. The four weeks preceding Christmas are collectively known as Advent, which begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on December 24.

The history of the carol is somewhat murky. The earliest known version first appeared in a 1780 children’s book called Mirth With-out Mischief.  Some historians think the song could be French in origin, but most agree it was designed as a “memory and forfeits” game, in which singers tested their recall of the lyrics and had to award their opponents a “forfeit” — a kiss or a favor of some kind — if they made a mistake.

Many variations of the lyrics have existed at different points. Some mention “bears a-baiting” or “ships a-sailing”; some name the singer’s mother as the gift giver instead of their true love. Early versions list four “colly” birds, an archaic term meaning black as coal (blackbirds, in other words). And some people theorize that the five gold rings actually refer to the markings of a ring-necked pheasant, which would align with the bird motif of the early verses.

In any case, the song most of us are familiar with today comes from an English composer named Frederic Austin; in 1909, he set the melody and lyrics (including changing “colly” to “calling”) and added as his own flourish the drawn-out cadence of “five go-old rings.”

The song is not a coded primer on Christianity

A popular theory that’s made the internet rounds is that the lyrics to “The 12 Days of Christmas” are coded references to Christianity; it posits that the song was written to help Christians learn and pass on the tenets of their faith while avoiding persecution. Under that theory, the various gifts break down as follows, as the myth-debunking website Snopes explained:

2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments

3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues

4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists

5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch,” which gives the history of man’s fall from grace.

6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation

7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments

8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes

9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit

10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments

11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles

12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed

The partridge in the pear tree, naturally, represents Jesus Christ.

Fearless: Week 2

This week, we continued our 5 week Praise Thursday devotional over a topic that I think hits us all pretty hard. Fear is something almost all of us will battle during our lifetime, trying to paralyze you from truly living life. This devotional will lead you through five choices that will strengthen you and help you be victorious over fear.

Here’s the devotional for week 2:

From our author, he says: “I’ve known the face of fear in my lifetime. As a child, I struggled with being afraid of rejection. It manifested in the form of me believing that if I performed well, then I would be loved more. Later, as an adult, having survived an armed robbery with my young children at home, fear of being attacked again and fear of not being able to protect my children at night reared its ugly head.”
Fear often strikes us when we least expect it.

As we journey to overcome fear, we learn that fear is not of the Lord. He longs for us to live a life free from its grips. Over time and with the grace of the Lord, He has shows us how to overcome fears. Whatever your battle might be, you can overcome it as you place your hope in the saving power of Jesus Christ. You cannot conquer fear in your own strength. Every day, we have to choose hope over despair. Our encouragement to you as you read this devotional is to choose hope.

Hope, by its nature, is future-focused. It has its foundation firmly secure in trusting in God. Hope in your heart can give you the strength you need to conquer your specific fear. In an atmosphere of praise and worship, hope can arise. So, today, if you feel like despairing, don’t give up. Lift your head and worship God. Hope in God will not disappoint you, and hope will give you the courage to continue on the journey of overcoming fear.

Our verses we reflected on today:

Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth.

Romans 5:5
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

As we pray, remember that when fear knocks at your door, let hope answer for you.
Reflect on hope. What do you need to do to let hope arise in your heart?

Our prayer:
“Lord, oh it seems like hope is fading. The fears are closing in and constricting the truths. Show me how to overcome my fears. I know that I can overcome this battle. I can beat this stronghold, but only with your help. I cannot conquer fear through my own strength. When I wake up, Lord, remind me to choose hope over despair, and choose the truth over the lies. Let me build my future firmly trusting and hoping in You and Your power. Give me the determination to not give up. This fight is not easy, but I know you will not give up on me. On the bad days, remind me to lift my head and worship worship You. Continue to give me the courage to continue on the journey of overcoming fear. Amen.”

Who knew Wednesday: Food For the Hungry!

Today Todd and I talked about a very important thing that is happing here in Knox County

Now in its 37th year, Food for the Hungry is an annual drive that collects food and revenue for the Knox County branches of The Salvation Army and Interchurch Social Services. These agencies, in turn, use the donations to help Knox County families with basic necessities throughout the year. 100% of all donations to Food For the Hungry stay in Knox County.  The drive culminates in an eight- hour live television, radio, and web broadcast.

Food For The Hungry began as a food and money drive on WMVO radio to benefit Interchurch Social Services and the Salvation Army in 1982. Long-time WMVO morning show host Charlie Kilkenny started the drive with the help of his wife, Carol, and businesses at the Mount Vernon Shopping Plaza (now the Kroger Plaza). Mount Vernon Cablevision joined in sponsoring the drive the next year. The drive grew into a partnership between the radio stations and other media (WNZR, Mount Vernon News) in 1995, and added Mount Vernon Nazarene University (who sponsored a basketball tournament) and the accounting services of Nelson & Nelson one year later.

ANGTT 12/4

Welcome into the first Artist Newsday, Gametime Tuesday of December!

Today we shared some artist news and played some games as well!

For news, we shared from our friend Meredith Andrews about her upcoming album!
She will be releasing a new album in March of 2019, it’s called her “Faith and Wonder” EP. Meredith was called away from her major – family and child development – her Junior year at Liberty University while leading worship. “It was like the Lord just dropped something into my spirit saying ‘This is it. This is it! This is what I called you to do.’ I remember thinking, ‘This is the thing that makes me feel most alive.’ It is also the thing I feel like the Lord takes the most delight in, and I feel closest to Him when I’m doing it.”
We’re anticipating new music from this amazing artist!

Our friends Sanctus Real recently sat down with Jesus Freak Hideout and talked about their new album “Changed” which includes the popular song “Confidence”.
Dustin, lead vocalist of Sanctus Real talked about the themes that are present in this new album: “I love talking about God’s love and I feel like it’s deeper a lot of times than we mention it. We kind of make it this emotional thing but it’s the thing that, to me, gives us our value and gives us our worth. It’s so secure and stable and it goes back to the idea of being OK in difficult situations. So I’m probably to blame for a lot of the love talk. But to me the Bible does say, “God is love” and so love kind of is God.”

Congratulations to our Name that Tune winner that is also winning the two tickets to see For King and Country at their “Little Drummer Boy” tour in Columbus!
Debbie from Mt. Vernon correctly guessed that our Name that Tune song was “Hope is what we Crave”! She’ll be seeing For King and Country!

Congrats also to our Song Poetry winner, Maude from Mt. Vernon!
Our lyrics were…
“They’ll beat you up
But don’t let them keep you down
‘Cause you’ll always toughen up
And I’ll always be around”

Thanks for listening!

Mystery Monday 12/3/18 – MYSTERY BOX!

THE BEST TIME OF THE MONTH IS HERE – Mystery Box Monday!

On today’s show, Hannah placed a mystery item into our wonderful Mystery Box, and with your help, I guessed what was inside!

To begin, Hannah had me start off with the sound test. Right off the bat, I guessed it was a necklace by its lightweight feel and rolling sound. It was indeed a necklace, but Hannah wanted a more specific answer, so we continued onto the next sense test!

Next, we moved onto the scent test! After smelling the necklace, I asked “Is this edible?” (NO), and “Does it help you feel calm?” (YES)! Congrats to Amanda from Fredricktown for calling in and correctly guessing the item–Oil Diffusing Necklace! She won the $5 gift certificate to Troyer’s of Apple Valley!

Sticking with our essential oils themed Mystery Box, Hannah and I shared with you some fun, interesting facts about essential oils! Click HERE and RIGHT HERE for all the scentsational information.

We also played a little “Name that Tune” today for your chance to win tickets to the Little Drummer Boy Christmas Tour featuring For King & Country and Zach Williams…

Congrats to Mckensey from Gambier for winning those 2 tickets! She correctly named the tune, “Proof Of Your Love”!

DON’T FORGET FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY IS THIS SATURDAY (12/8)!

Thank you so much for tuning into the Afternoon Drive today. Your support means the absolute world to us!
