Hallelujah Here Below: Week 1

Today on the Afternoon Drive, we started a new series for Praise Thursday! It’s called “Hallelujah Here Below” and it is written by the members of Elevation Worship.

The devotional is named after Elevation Worship’s latest album of the same name. Elevation Worship is based out of Elevation Church and led by Pastor Steven Furtick. This will be a five week series here on The Drive, and over these next five weeks, we’ll journey through five songs from the album – and how God doesn’t ask for perfect praise –– He wants praise that only we can give Him: broken and imperfect.

Each of the devotionals is based on a song from Elevation Worship’s new album. This first week’s devotional is based on the song “Won’t Stop Now“.
The takeaway line from this song is…
Your presence is an open door, so come now, Lord, like never before.”
We encourage you to listen to the song as you read through this week’s blog.

Here’s this week’s devotional content…

Why don’t we always feel God’s presence? If God’s presence is really an open door, why does the door sometimes feel like it’s been shut?
There are a lot of reasons God could feel far away, but none of those reasons is because God has pulled away from us.

God’s love for us is unchanging, unending, and unconditional. No matter what we do, He will always love us. Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we still sinners, Christ died for us. We see His unchanging and powerful love in the scriptures, but still, we can’t expect God to come into our lives uninvited. He’s not going to overwhelm us with His presence if we haven’t asked for it.

The Bible says to, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).
God wants participation, not passivity. He isn’t going to knock on the door and drag us through it. His presence is an open door, but it’s up to us to step through it.

Here are a few more Bible verses on this topic, reminding us that we need to walk through the door of God’s presence.
Mark 11:24 – “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Matthew 21:22 – “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
John 16:24 – “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”

We look back at our key verse as we wrap up this week’s devotional: Matthew 7:7.
We’ve touched on 7:7, but as we finish, let’s look a little further into the verses in Matthew… This is Matthew 7:7-11.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Here’s a prayer for this week…
“Lord, I thank You that You invite me into Your presence. I thank You that Your love for me is unchanging, unending, and unconditional. No matter what I do, You will always love me. I pray that this week, Lord, I will participate in Your unconditional love, and not be passive. Your presence is an open door, Lord, but it’s up to me to step through it. Give me the courage and the strength to step through those doors. I thank You for the good gifts that You give to those who ask. Give me the strength to ask, to seek, and to knock through prayer, and in Your name.
Amen.”

Thanks for listening!

Who Knew Wednesday: Quick Ways to Be Better than Average!

Good Afternoon!

Today Todd and I talk about some ways to be better than Average in less than 5 minutes and the results of the 49th Dove Awards!

First, we shared with you that the average person gets two or three colds a year and the average respiratory infection lasts 7 to 10 days. Be better than average. Don’t try to blow out a cold. Blowing your nose vigorously could make your cold last longer. Using CT scans, researchers at the University of Virginia discovered that nose blowing actually forces some mucus backward, propelling bacteria and viruses directly into your sinuses and triggering reactions that can make your cold worse. Limit your honking and take decongestants as soon as symptoms appear.

Then that the average person has a one-in-three chance of having high blood pressure, which looks like a systolic (the top number of your blood pressure) reading of 140 mmHg or over, and a diastolic (the bottom number) reading of 90 or over – again, be better than average and lower the blood pressure by exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and reducing the sodium in your diet!

Praise Thursday: The Last Day of “Let’s Pray”

Today, Lilly and I shared the last devotional from the devotional Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr. James Banks, who serves as a pastor at Peace Church in Durham, North Carolina and is a regular writer for Our Daily Bread. Today’s last piece of Let’s Pray is  “Prayers to Say Thank You.’
Prayer 1
You are the one who is over all things.
Oh Lord, the God of our ancestor Israel, may you be praised forever and ever! Yours, O Lord is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory in the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on the earth is yours, O Lord,  and this is your Kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand,  and that your discretion people are made great and given strength. Oh our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name! But who am I and who are my people that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you and we give you only what you first gave us! We are here for only a moment visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors before us>
Our days on earth are like a passing shadow. Gone so soon without a trace.
Prayer 2
Thank you for making me.
You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous,  how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed, woven together in the dark of the moon. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book, every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  How precious are your thoughts about me, oh god. They cannot be numbered I can’t even count them! They outnumber the grains of sand and when I wake up you are still with me! – Psalm 139: 13- 18
Prayer 3
I trust you and praise you with all of my heart.
Praise the Lord! For he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my joy. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of Thanksgiving. – Psalm 28:6- 7
Prayer 4
Thank you for the simple message of salvation!
Oh father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think of themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, father, it pleased you to do it this way! – from Matthew 11:25–26
Prayer Starters:
Thank you for being near.
I think you, oh God! I give thanks because you were here. People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds. – Psalms 75:1
Thank you for hearing me.
Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me. – from John 11:41–42
Thank you for answering my prayer.
I thank you for answering my prayer and giving me victory! – Psalms 118:21
Thank you!
