Let’s Pray – Guidance and Directon

Today, we continue sharing devotionals from the book Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr. James Banks, who serves as a pastor at Peace Church in Durham, North Carolina and is a regular writer for Our Daily Bread.

In this short book, we are reminded that the prayers of the Bible are an amazing gift from God and they have so much to teach us.

Scripture tells of God guiding His people through all kinds of circumstances. He went ahead of Israel through the wilderness, leading them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, as we read in Exodus 13:21. He sent angels to lead Lot and his family out of Sodom, which we find in Genesis 19:16, and led Peter out of prison, as we see in Acts 12:7.

Both David and Isaiah describe God affectionately in Psalm 23 as a shepherd and Micah prophesied about Jesus saying “He will stand to lead his flock with the Lord’s strength.” The Bible’s message is comforting and clear. Its message is this: even though God knows every detail of our lives, our heavenly Father still cares deeply about the intimated details of our lives.

With all the instances of God leading in scripture, the prayers for guidance and direction are relatively few. Haddon Robinson writes, “It’s surprising to note that nowhere in the Old Testament, the teachings of Jesus, or the New Testament epistles do we see any description of a step-by-step process by which we can determine God’s will”. There is a reason for this.

God’s guidance stems from our relationship with Him. Our shepherd wants to feed us, carry us in his arms, hold us close to His heart, and gently lead us. We find that in Isaiah 40:11. We are told through 1st Thessalonians 5:17 that we should pray continually because it is impossible to discern God’s leading in our lives without prayer.
As with prayers about everyday needs, the Bible’s prayers for guidance and direction are relational prayers. Relational prayer doesn’t just seek God’s will – it seeks His face as well. Relational prayer puts us in a place where the Lord can help us discover His leading and response with deeper obedience and love.

God reminded His people through Isaiah, “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength” and we find that in Isaiah 30:15. Fresh strength flows into us as we pray, fast, and wait before Him in His word.

Who Knew Wednesday!

Today Todd and I walked about something that is very close to our hearts, and that is missions. Specifically, we shared with you some stories of people Todd and I know that are taking the word of God to places that don’t have a good understanding of our faith.

First, we talked about a man that my family is friends with. He gave up everything to do what God called him to. He moved across seas, meet his wife and they now share the word of God in a place where the word of God isn’t normally shared.

Then we shared with you about the ministry of Todd’s friends and what they are doing where God has called them to be, which is in a place that is very hostile to Christians. Todd shared about how brave these people are. He also shared about how these people have looked at mountains and told them to move and they did.

Todd and I both as asked that you pray for these people, who are being the hands and feet of God, and any other missionaries you may know.

Prayers for Everyday Needs

Today, we continue sharing devotionals from the book Let’s Pray: Talking to God with the Words of the Bible, by Dr. James Banks, who serves as a pastor at Peace Church in Durham, North Carolina and is a regular writer for Our Daily Bread.

In this short book, we are reminded that the prayers of the Bible are an amazing gift from God and they have so much to teach us.

This is what Alex and Stephen Kendrick talk about in their book The Battle Plan for Prayer in the chapter called ‘Praying the Word.’ In the prayers of scripture, we find words that can help carry our thoughts and emotions to God. He invites us closer to him through the prayers of the Bible.

This week, we’re sharing prayers from the Word for everyday needs.

Dr. Banks reminds us that sometimes we run into heaven’s throne room with our list of needs.  Yes, Hebrews 4 encourages us to come boldly to the throne of grace, but sometimes we can be TOO bold!

As the angels surround the throne, hiding their faces in worship at the awesome wonder of God, we burst in without knocking, like an impatient child, making all of our wants and wishes known!

But still, even as we do this, we meet a Father who welcomes us in grace…and we can approach without fear, because He knows our daily needs and cares about them.  As we mature in our prayer life, we eventually find that our heart also matures, and starts to beat in rhythm with His heart!

Prayers about everyday needs help us gain perspective.  They are not only about things necessary in life, but also our need for a growing relationship with our heavenly father.  God wants us to seek HIM first (Matthew 6:33), then bring our everyday needs to Him with faith and expectation.

Our prayers from the word today start with Psalm 139, which helps us know that God is with us wherever we go. Psalm 139: 7-12 reminds us that we can never escape from his spirit and we can never escape from his presence:
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

Today we’re also going to share some prayer starters. These are verses from The Book of Psalms that can help us start our prayers.

The first is, “please keep my needs in your thoughts,” inspired by Psalm 44:17…
But as for me, I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
you are my God, do not delay.

The second prayer starter is from Psalm 65: you forgive my sins and bring me joy…

When we were overwhelmed by sins,
you forgave[a] our transgressions.
Blessed are those you choose
and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
of your holy temple.

Thanks for listening!
