The Dog Star?

August First Friday is just around the corner and we are excited to be hosting the main event for this month – the “Dog Days of Summer” Dog Parade! First Friday will run from 6-9pm, but registration for the dog parade is on-site only in Downtown Mount Vernon from 6:30-7:15.

We have all heard the phrase “Dog Days of Summer”, but what does that actually MEAN?

Sure, this time of year is typically the hottest it gets, but that is not the origin of the phrase. This saying is actually derived from astrology and this time of year celebrates when Sirius – known as the “Dog Star” rises to its most noticeable point. So next time you are out stargazing, keep an eye out for the Sirius star because it’ll only be prominent until roughly August 11th.

You can read Scott Smith’s article that we referred to during the show here!

Navigating The Storms of Life

As we navigate life, there are often times when life gets so overwhelming we feel disoriented. In one of today’s devotionals called “Navigating the Storms of Life” we talked about this. When you’re feeling disoriented and lost, God’s faithful guidance through His Spirit and loving presence can comfort you and light your way. To read this devotional click HERE. Our other devotion was called “Not Taking Advantage”. The way we treat others reveals what we believe and value. When we choose to do good instead of harm, our actions might just prompt them to wonder about the God we know and love. To read this devotional for yourself click HERE.

Q: How many people boarded Noah’s Ark?

Shark Awareness Day

Today, we dove into the oceans of the world to discuss the importance of sharks in our society!

While the media has portrayed these creatures as “menaces” or “beasts”, sharks are a key factor to keeping their environment in tact. Think of the food chain. Sharks eat something else that eats something else, and population control is a real issue in the ocean.

The hunting of sharks are the main reason for such a significant drop in population. Skin, meat, and fins are all profitable parts that are taken away from sharks for our own personal gain. Shark support groups use Shark Awareness Day, every year on this date, to protect and preserve the integrity and importance of these creatures that sit atop the food chain.

I got the devil on my throat
Got blood on my hands
The ones that I love are in danger
I’m a fallen man
But I found me a river
And it washes me clean
I know that I’m drowning for trying
But I’ll never leave

Music, Music, and More Music

Today for artist news day we talked about Crowder and Building 429. Both artists released new music last Friday, June 11th.

Crowder released his much anticipated album “Milk & Honey”. This album features collaborations from Hulvey and Maverick City Music. Crowder actually recorded this album in his basement during the pandemic while still connecting with writers, producers, and artists. This album features the song “Good God Almighty” which has been at the top of the charts for a couple weeks. To read more click HERE.

Building 429 a new single called “Not Finished Yet”. This upbeat song is a stirring, hopeful pop anthem about how even when we stray far away, God is there, ready to draw us close to Him. “Not Finished Yet’ was written by Building 429 frontman Jason Roy along with Riley Friesen, who also produced the song. The weight of the world is getting heavier now

Feels like its far too much to carry around

And each and every little time that you fall starts

Looking like the end of it all
