Here comes February!

mom-confetti

It’s the first of February – what are you looking forward to this month?

The start of election season?  Valentine’s Day?  President’s Day?  The hope of more snow? Our staff is preparing for the WNZR Valentine’s Banquet on 2/12, welcoming Ohio’s Distinguished Young Women on 2/13, the annual National Religious Broadcasters’ convention starting 2/22, and an EARLY spring break starting 2/26!

Today’s Mystery Monday question: The average American lives 18 miles from what?  The answer?  From their MOM!  Congratulations to Katie from Mount Vernon – she guessed correctly and wins a $5 gift certificate to the MVNU Cougar Corner bookstore.

Our Word of the Day is nonce, which is a noun meaning in the present moment, occasion or purpose.  It’s really a Middle English word for now.

Unconditional love

Today we praise God for the incredible gift of God’s unconditional love.  Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that NOTHING can separate us from His kind of love.  But do we accept that love?  How do we respond to it?

The book Lead Like Jesus by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges asks us to consider: “what if you admit that you can’t achieve enough, earn enough or control enough to get any more love? You already have all the love there is there is through Jesus!”

Our response to this love should be to let it fill our hearts and let it flow out to others.

Our word of the day is INSOUCIANT – an adjective meaning free from concern, anxiety or worry.

Thanks for listening!

Game Time Tuesday – 1/19

Today was Game Time Tuesday on the Afternoon Drive!

First, we told you about Happy Bean Coffee coming to MVNU’s Hunter Hall. You can find their Facebook page here.

We played Song Poetry with the lyrics I wanna know You / I wanna find You / In every season / In every moment, and Kristen from Mount Vernon quickly called in and guessed that those lyrics belong to Lauren Daigle’s song First.

Also, Joselyn from Howard was our winner with Name That Tune, which My Lighthouse by Rend Collective.

Our Word of the Day was kerflooey, an adverb meaning to cease functioning, especially suddenly and completely. You can read more on that here.

Have a terrific Tuesday evening,

Jess

Gettys and Gherkins

pickle-jar-clipart-1

Our Mystery Monday trivia question asked this: “Atkins, Arkansas is famous for selling the first what?”

The answer is a fried dill pickle.  The History Channel says the first deep-fried pickle was sold at an Atkins Pickle Company festival in 1963.  They’re pretty much a staple now at fairs, festivals and as an appetizer at many restaurants.

The prize today was the CD ‘In Christ Alone’ from Keith and Kristyn Getty, the amazing worship leaders from Northern Ireland.  Congratulations to Tomi from Mount Vernon for winning the prize.  Find out more about the Gettys here.

Our word of the day was related to the question – GHERKIN. It means a small variety of cucumber. Those baby sweet pickles…yep, those are gherkins!

Thanks for listening!

Praise and Power

camp same power

I hope you’re praising into the new year.  Today we played some songs that remind us of the incredible love and power of God.  ‘Let it Be Love’ by Family Force 5, ‘Same Power’ by Jeremy Camp, ‘Noel’ from Lauren Daigle, ‘You Are Loved’ by Stars Go Dim…and many more.

We also talked about the power behind finding solitude as you start this new year.  Alone time with just you and God. No smartphone, no agenda, just a time for you to be quiet and hear his still, small voice.  Think about how counter-cultural that is in 2016 – yet, it is sometimes EXACTLY what we need!

Today we gave away Winter Jam 2016 passes and we’ll have more tomorrow on The Morning Thing and right here.

Today’s Word of the Day was TERPSICHOREAN (terp-sih-KORE-ee-un), which is an adjective meaning something pertaining to dancing.

Thanks for listening!

Starting 2016 strong!

winter lettuce

Welcome to 2016!

Today’s show was a mixed bag of trivia, stories and inspired songs. One of those choruses was Darlene Zschech’s “Made Me Glad,” which offers this statement of victory for all who know Jesus:

You are my SHIELD, my STRENGTH, my PORTION, my DELIVERER…my SHELTER, STRONG TOWER, my very present HELP in time of need!

I hope that as you begin the new year, you can rest firmly in that promise.

Our trivia question for Mystery Monday was: What county in what state is known as the ‘winter lettuce’ capital of the world?  It produces 90% of the lettuce sold in the US from November-March.

The answer? Yuma County, Arizona. (source: Good Housekeeping)

Our winner was Tanya of Mount Vernon.

Our word of the day was SALUBRIOUS – an adjective meaning favorable to or promoting health.

Thanks for listening!

Baubles and Mistletoe

Mistletoe-photo-vintage.jpg

The last two days, we’ve shared a couple of ‘Words of the Day’ that we seem to only hear this time of year…

Bauble: this word sounds like BOBBLE but refers to a common type of decoration or ornament.  Originally, baubles were decorations at the end of batons carried by court jesters.

Mistletoe: this is a plant or herb that is hung from a doorway or ceiling that encourages a kiss.  Why?  The History Channel explains in an article posted in 2013: click here to read it

Mystery Monday – 12/14

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive!

We took a break from the Mystery Box today since we’re in the middle of the WNZR Christmas Gift Exchange. Congratulations to Barb and Larry, our two winners for today’s show!

Have a great week!

Mystery Monday

Today was Mystery Monday on the Afternoon Drive.

I hid something in the Mystery Box, and after the hearing, smell, and taste tests, Stephen from Mt. Vernon called in and correctly guessed the item in the box was Chick-fil-a Sauce.

We told you all about the Fredericktown Christmas Walk, which is happening this Saturday from 4 pm – 8 pm in downtown Fredericktown.

Our Word of the Day was advent, a noun meaning both the coming of Christ, or the arrival of a notable person, event, or thing. You can read more on that here.

Have a great week!
