A book, a duck, and a PTPer!

Today’s Who Knew focuses on two significant June 9th events…

1- the release of the Book of Common Prayer in 1549

2- the debut (and birthday) of Donald Duck in 1934

The Book of Common Prayer originated from the Church of England as part of the English Reformation after the break with Rome. BOC was the first prayer book to include the complete forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English.

Donald Duck first appeared in a 1934 film called The Wise Little Hen, a retelling of the original little red hen story. The exasperated, sometimes angry Donald we came to know and love didn’t really show up until later that August in this first movie with Mickey Mouse, Orphan’s Benefit. Since then he has gone on to appear in video games, episodes of cartoons, and stands out as the Disney character who has appeared in the most films to date.

The first week of May – so much happening!

Today is one of those Who Knew Wednesday shows that has a lot to cover!

It’s Cinco de Mayo…here’s the scoop if you’re heading out for some Mexican food tonight:

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Wednesday, May 5 in 2021, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

Today’s W food…

Is watermelon! Now that we’re turning the corner into warmer weather, expect to see more of this flowering fruit around, in both its natural state and watermelon-flavored things.

Some of the health benefits of watermelon? Healthline.com shares these:

It contains only 46 calories per cup but is high in vitamin C, vitamin A and many healthy plant compounds.

Drinking water is an important way to keep your body hydrated. Interestingly, watermelon is 92% water, and high water content is one of the reasons why fruits and vegetables help you feel full. The combination of water and fiber means you’re eating a good volume of food without a lot of calories.

One cup (154 grams) of watermelon includes these vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin C: 21% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI)
  • Vitamin A: 18% of the RDI
  • Potassium: 5% of the RDI
  • Magnesium: 4% of the RDI
  • Vitamins B1, B5 and B6: 3% of the RDI

Watermelon is also high in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene. Plus, it has citrulline, an important amino acid.

Here’s a link to an easy watermelon sorbet recipe from thethingswellmake.com

Here’s the link to the CNN article I shared about a possible shortage of gasoline trucks this summer.
