Here are today’s tips from the Who Knew? book:

Toothpaste is a great household helper and it even comes in handy with burns. If you sustained a minor burn, cover it with white non-gel toothpaste to ease the pain and help it heal.

You can also soothe and help heal minor bruises and scrapes by using the inside of a banana peel to gently rub the injury. Treat as fast as possible to reduce bruising.

The ancient Egyptians relied on honey for cuts and burns long before antibiotics were around. Besides offering a soothing protective layer over minor wounds, the honey provides a natural antibiotic. Put a layer of pure honey on before a bandage.

Here’s a trick for splinters. Use vegetable oil! It softens the skin and helps the offending piece of wood slide back out. You can also put a drop of white glue over the splinter, let it dry, and then peel off the dried glue. The splinter will stick to the glue and come right out.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to a surge in hand sanitizer purchases, but now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that nine brands may be potentially toxic.

The FDA said Friday that consumers should stop using any hand sanitizer from Mexico-based manufacturer SA de CV, due to the potential presence of methanol, or wood alcohol, in its products. The FDA warned that methanol can be toxic when ingested or absorbed through the skin.

A Call to Kindness

Lately I’ve been convicted about kindness.

I’ve been hearing some horror stories about how people have been treated in the shadow of the coronavirus. Stories from essential workers being yelled at by people because they didn’t have something in stock, or they didn’t do something ‘supposedly’ the right way.

Yesterday morning, I heard from one of my friends, who works at a pretty popular regional restaurant, about how they had to ask a gentleman to leave last week because he was upset there was one item on their newly-reopened salad bar that they did not have.

I started thinking…very transparently…if your life revolves around the fact that you can’t have a certain type of salad; potato, macaroni, broccoli, whatever, then you probably need to look in the mirror and figure out what’s really wrong.

Then I started thinking… have I had moments in my life where I allowed one really insignificant thing to kill my kindness? I actually found a few.

Many of you are familiar with the ABC-TV show ‘Full House’ and the recent Netflix sequel, ‘Fuller House.’ One of the stars is Candace Cameron Bure. She wrote a devotional for Proverbs 31 Ministries a couple of years ago called ‘a call for kindness’ and it has so much significance today. Click here to read it. It encourages us to have great hope in the midst of an unkind world.

I see 2020 as a continuing watershed moment in our faith. Can we be the voice of kindness? Can we be the voice of loving and listening? Are we tuned into people that need an encouraging word today? I certainly hope so.

Titus 3: 4-5 says, “but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our savior appeared he saved us not because of works done by us and righteousness but according to his own mercy by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

Part 2 – Who Knew?

Today we shared more home remedy tips from the Who Knew? book from Bruce and Jeanne Lubin.

STRESS: Many people hold stress in the area between their eyebrows, and in time, vertical stress lines will develop there. When you feel your brow knit together with concentration or stress, take a moment to pinch the muscle there, working from the center of the brow along the brow line in each direction with a thumb and a bent forefinger.

SLEEP: If you’re having trouble sleeping, there’s an all-natural insomnia cure. At bedtime, drink a glass of water, then let a pinch of salt dissolve on your tongue. Just make sure the salt doesn’t touch the roof of your mouth. Studies show the combination of salt and water can induce a deep sleep. The essential oil lavender is also good for this.

CANKER SORES: Hydrogen peroxide can help reduce and relieve canker sores. Simply mix one part peroxide with one part water, then dab on any affected area several times a day…or swish around in your mouth for as long as possible. If you feel a canker sore coming on but it hasn’t erupted yet, hold a slice of fresh garlic to the spot for 10 minutes. It’ll make your breath stink, but it will also stop the sore from forming.

RICE HEAT? Here’s a tip for a homemade heating pad. Add uncooked long grain rice to a sock and tie it shut. Whenever you need a little heat after a long day, stick it in the microwave on high for 1 to 2 minutes and you’ll have soothing warmth. You can also add a little scent to the pillow by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the rice.

Prayers for Amy…Tauren gives back…

On Sunday, the legendary Amy Grant shared openly about her recent heart surgery on her Instagram account…Amy successfully underwent the procedure on June 3 to correct a partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR), a congenital heart condition.let’s keep praying for her full recovery!

Hi everybody…. I know there is so much going on in the world right now. This is a crazy, broken, yet beautiful time. And in the midst of all of that – in the midst of all of our awareness and becoming and learning to love and see each other – I’ve had this really unique experience of having an unanticipated open heart surgery. The only way I can explain my experience would be to ask you to imagine a non-runner who was signed up for a marathon. I didn’t want it, but I had to have it anyway and it was a week ago Wednesday. And as people heard about the surgery I started getting messages: “I’m praying for you” …“I’m praying for you”. People I worked with decades ago, people who have come to my concerts or listen to my music, my work family, people on social media, and my own friends and family all offered their prayers. And now, ten days later, I just want to say, from the moment I went to the hospital, if it really were a marathon race, I felt like I got into that runners block and as soon as it was time for the race to start there was this massive West Texas wind at my back.. just pushing me through. Even stuff I was really scared about felt like nothing more than just a deep breath and something supernatural pushed me through it. My recovery has honestly felt miraculous. And so I want to say thank you to each person who said a prayer for me. Prayer changes everything. Let’s keep those prayers going for our country and lets turn all the brokenness into love and seeing each other. I love you. Amy
