Waffles Wednesday!

National Waffle Day is TODAY! Why? From thenibble.com

In 1869, Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York, a Dutch-American, receives a patent for the first waffle iron in the U.S., on August 24th. Described as a “device to bake waffles,” one heats up the waffle iron over a coal stove, pour batter on the griddle, close the cover and after a few minutes, flip the griddle and cook the other side of the waffle. It becomes very popular. The anniversary of the patent is now celebrated as National Waffle Day.

More history?

In 1620, Dutch “wafles” come to America with the Pilgrims, who spend time in Holland prior to sailing to America. 1735. The word “waffle,” with two “fs,” appears in print in English for the first time.

In 1789, at the start of the French Revolution, Thomas Jefferson returns to the U.S. from his position as Minister to France. Along with a pasta machine, he brings a long-handled waffle iron that encloses the batter and gives the waffle crispness and shape. This begins the trend of “waffle frolics” or waffle parties, where guests can enjoy their waffles sweet (with maple syrup or molasses) or savory (topped with kidney stew).

What’s a Waffle Bomb?

It’s new this year to the 167th Ohio State Fair! A waffle bomb is a chocolate-covered jumbo strawberry deep fried in waffle batter. Just one of the many new treats…or $30 meals…take your pick. Some of my other discoveries:

  • the Alfredo-stuffed turkey leg from Hickory Tree BBQ, right beside the Main Street Stage
  • Cajun waffle dogs – andouille sausages, dipped in waffle batter, deep-fried
  • cold edible cookie dough
  • cornbread funnel cake
  • waffle pickle dogs – pickle spears on a stick, wrapped in black forest ham, dipped in Belgian Waffle batter, deep-fried
  • Nutter Butter stuffed funnel
Who Am I?
–         I was born August 3, 1977 in San Mateo, California
–         I attended the school UP NORTH (Michigan)
–         I was a 6th round NFL Draft Pick in 2000
–         Since then, I’ve won a record seven Super Bowls with two teams
–         My wife is from Brazil
–         I retired, then unretired this spring

Fair, moon walks and concerts…

Who knew?

July 20th is the 53rd anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s moon walk. July 20, 1969 was the day when Wapakoneta’s favorite son walked on the surface of the moon – “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

  • I was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2010 for services to drama
  • I recently returned to the role of Picard for a new series on Paramount Plus

Who Knew…travel would be like this?

Here are some ‘who knews’ on July 4th travel this year:

AAA is reporting that more than 47.9 million Americans, including a record 2.2 million Ohioans, will travel this Independence Day holiday weekend (June 30 – July 4). This is an increase of 3.7% nationally, and 3.8% for Ohio. While national travel numbers are expected to fall just shy of 2019, AAA expects Ohio travel will build on the record travel numbers set in 2021 to reach a new high this Independence Day.

Despite historically high gas prices, a record number of people are planning a holiday road trip, with 42 million Americans (nearly 2.1 million Ohioans) hitting the road this Independence Day travel period.

AAA predicts Independence Day holiday air travel will grow by 1.5% nationally with 3.55 million Americans flying during the holiday travel period. Ohio air travel numbers will fall 1.2% compared to last Independence Day, with just over 70,000 Ohioans flying during the five-day holiday period. Higher flight costs, recent issues with air travel and ongoing concerns of cancelations and delays may be pushing more people to drive this year.

Cooling off and festival time!

All of us are trying to beat the heat…and for some of us, it’s harder because of the ongoing power outages. So how can you stay cool in these challenging days?

Tomorrow starts the 17th year of the Heart of Ohio USA Days Festival in Centerburg. This is a great family, fun-filled event running through Saturday.

What about parking? It’s available at the Centerburg High School just west of town. Free school bus shuttles will be offered on Friday evening and all-day Saturday from after the parade till after the fireworks. Handicapped parking will be available in the park as well as for vendors and entertainers. Anyone who wishes may find alternate parking in town and use the sidewalk or trail to walk to the park from there.

There is motorcycle parking available in the lot near the water tower, right across from the park entrance. Only motorcycles are allowed to use this lot!
