Today Todd and I tackled the Who Knew Wednesday, the Halloween Edition – In 45 minutes!

Candy Fun Facts

  •  If Brach’s laid out the candy corn kernels it sells each year end to end, they would wrap around the Earth 4.25 times.
  • Why is bubblegum pink? Well, when it was invented, pink was the only food dye on hand.
  • Milky Way bars weren’t named after their home galaxy. The name comes from a type of malted milkshake that was popular in the early 1920s.
  • The Charleston Chew takes its name from the Charleston, a popular early-20th-century dance.
  • What are Ohio’s favorite candies? M&M’s take first place in our state, followed by Blow-Pops and Starburst.

Trick or Treat Safety Tips

  • Mt. Vernon’s Trick or Treating is tonight from 5:30-7:00!
  • If you’ll be out on the Trick or Treat trail this evening, we’ve got some tips for you to make sure you stay safe!
  • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
  •  A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
  •  If older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home.
  •  A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.
  • When the kids get back from Trick or Treating, be sure to closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.

500th Anniversary of the Reformation

  •  In 1517, on October 31st, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the All Saints church in Wittenberg, Germany.
  • Luther wrote these 95 Theses as a response, disputing the Catholic churches use of indulgences, sparking the Reformation.

A quick history of the Reformation…

  •  It was a religious movement which challenged the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Luther held that salvation came by grace through faith alone, not by good works or payment. The Reformation also led to the creation of Protestant churches separate from the Roman Catholic Church.

Fun things about this year…

  •  Today is the 500th anniversary of Luther’s 95 Theses!
  • The center of Wittenberg has been transformed to recreate the medieval era in which Luther lived, with performances taking place throughout the day.
  • In 2015, a commemorative Martin Luther figurine from Playmobil became the German company’s fastest-selling product ever. It took just 72 hours for the initial run of 34,000 to sell out, leading the company to rush another batch into production. A spokesperson labeled the demand a “big mystery.”

Caramel Apple Day

  • Caramel Apple Day is one of a collection of Candy themed holidays sponsored by the National Confectioner’s Association. Caramel apples have a long and tasty history of being created from some of the seasons’ favorite treats.
  • Granny Smith apples are by far the most popular apple used in these confections, the tart-tangy flavor playing an amazing counterpart to the sweetness of the caramel. The grainy-texture and sweeter flavors of other apples just don’t quite bring the flavor palette together.
  • Perfect Caramel Apple recipe
  • A party favorite… Caramel apple dip. Halloween fondue if you will.
  • Trisha Yearwood’s Cookies and Cream twist on the caramel classic…
