Did you know that today is the ‘birthday’ of Uncle Sam? Samuel Wilson, a meat packer, provided the U.S. Army with barrels of beef, stamped with “U.S.” for United States, right? Well, soldiers took to calling him Uncle Sam, and the name stuck. So this nickname for the government was adopted on this day in 1813.
